In this study the deformation of liquid-air interface of Newtonian or Boger fluids filled between two parallel-plates geometry was investigated when two surfaces were separated at a constant speed. The interface between the fluid and air showed either stable or unstable deformation depending on experimental conditions. Repeated experiments for a wide range of experimental conditions revealed that the deformation mode could be classified into three types: 'stable region', 'fingering' and 'cavitation'. The experimental condition for the mode of deformation was plotted in a capillary number vs. Deborah number phase plane. It has been found that the elasticity of Boger fluids destabilize the interface deformation. On the other hand, the elasticity suppresses the formation and growth of cavities.

In many practical lubricated contacts such as a rough concentrated contact on the sliding of nominally flat surfaces, the fluid may be of molecular (nanometer) scale owing to the asperity interactions on the surfaces. Under this condition, there is insufficient lubricant on the concentrated contact spot to maintain a realistic continuum. Rheological behavior for this kind of concentrated contact was studied to know whether the application of viscous fluid model is appropriate. The interaction of two rough surfaces is simplified as perfectly flat-rough surfaces contact under certain conditions by "composite topography" and for a nanometer scale fluid film, three kinds of rheological fluid behavior are analyzed in elastohydrodynamic asperity point contact.t contact.

In this paper, flow characteristics of plasma flow in a micro-tube were investigated experimentally using micro particle image velocimetry(micro-PIV). For comparison, the experiments were repeated for deionized(DI) wale. instead of plasma. Both velocity profiles of plasma and do-ionized water are well agreed with the theoretical velocity distribution of newtonian fluid. We also carried out generating plasma-in-oil droplet formation at a Y-junction microchannel. In order to clarify the hydrodynamic aspects involved in plasma droplet formation, Rhodamine-B were mixed with plasma only for visualization of plasma droplet. With oil as the continuous phase and plasma as the dispersed phase, plasma droplet can be generated in a continuous phase flow at a Y-junction. For given experimental parameters, regular-sized droplets are reproducibly formed at a uniform flow conditions.
In the present work, the breakup mechanism of highly viscous epoxy paints discharged from a fan spray nozzle was examined experimentally. The paints tested were non-Newtonian fluids, composed of epoxy resin, solid particles and other additives. The paint spray discharged from the nozzle was visualized and recorded using a digital camera with back illumination. Due to presence of the solid particles, perforation of liquid sheet was observed in most cases, even at low-Reynolds number conditions (Re < 15,000) where the aerodynamic-wave breakup mode is used to be dominant for pure liquids. However, with the increase of the particle concentration, the sheet became longer and the thickness at breakup became thinner to some extent. This is because, with higher concentration of solid particles, the stabilizing effect by the viscosity increase predominates over the destabilizing effect by perforation.
The influence of aerated oil on high-speed journal bearing Is examined by thermohydrodynamic lubrication theory to lubrication with mixtures of a Newtonian liquid and an ideal gas. For this purpose, analytical models for viscosity and density of aerated oil in fluid-film bearing are applied. Convection to the walls, mixing with supply oil and re-circulating oil, and some degree of journal misalignment are considered. The results show that deliberate oil aeration can increase the load capacity of high-speed plain Journal bearing. And the load capacity is increased more by oil aeration under the conditions of shaft misalignment and higher speed.
The paper studies the dispersion and attenuation of propagating waves in the "plate+compressible viscous fluid layer" system in the case where the fluid layer flow is restricted with a rigid wall, and in the case where the fluid layer has a free face. The motion of the plate is described by the exact equations of elastodynamics and the flow of the fluid by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations for compressible barotropic Newtonian viscous fluids. Analytical expressions are obtained for the amplitudes of the sought values, and the dispersion equation is derived using the corresponding boundary and compatibility conditions. To find the complex roots of the dispersion equation, an algorithm based on equating the modulus of the dispersion determinant to zero is developed. Numerical results on the dispersion and attenuation curves for various pairs of plate and fluid materials under different fluid layer face conditions are presented and discussed. Corresponding conclusions on the influence of the problem parameters on the dispersion and attenuation curves are made and, in particular, it is established that the change of the free face boundary condition with the impermeability condition can influence the dispersion and attenuation curves not only in the quantitative, but also in the qualitative sense.

Controlling the dissolved oxygen (DO) in the fed-batch culture of the medicinal mushroom Ganoderma lucidum led to a 2-fold increase of the maximum biomass productivity compared with uncontrolled DO conditions. By contrast, extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) production was two times higher under oxygen limitation (uncontrolled DO) than under increased oxygen availability (controlled DO). Morphologically, dispersed mycelium was predominant under controlled DO conditions, with highly branched hyphae, consistent with the enhanced culture growth noted under these conditions, whereas in the uncontrolled DO process mycelial clumps were the most common morphology throughout the culture. However, in both cultures, clamp connections were found. This is an exciting new finding, which widens the applicability of this basidiomycete in submerged fermentation. In rheological terms, broths demonstrated shear-thinning behavior with a yield stress under both DO conditions. The flow curves were best described by the Herschel-Bulkley model: flow index down to 0.6 and consistency coefficient up to 0.2 and 0.6 Pa $s^n$ in uncontrolled and controlled cultures DO, respectively. The pseudoplastic behavior was entirely due to the fungal biomass, and not to the presence of EPS (rheological analysis of the filtered broth showed Newtonian behavior). It is clear from this study that dissolved oxygen tension is a critical process parameter that distinctly influences G. lucidum morphology and rheology, affecting the overall performance of the process. This study contributes to an improved understanding of the process physiology of submerged fermentation of G. lucidum.
Natural convection of a magnetic fluid is different from that of Newtonian fluids because a magnetic body force exists in an addition to gravity and buoyancy forces. In this paper, the natural convection of a magnetic fluids (W-40) in a rectangular enclosure is investigated by numerical and experimental methods. One side wall is kept at a constant temperature ($25^{\circ}C$), and the opposite side wall is also kept at a constant temperature ($20^{\circ}C$), Under above conditions, the magnitude of the magnetic fields were varied and applied. GSMAC scheme is used for the numerical method, and the thermo-sensitive liquid crystal film (R20C5A) is utilized in order to visualize wall-temperature distributions as an experimental verification. This study has resulted in the following fact that the natural convection of a magnetic fluid is controlled by the direction and intensity of the magnetic fields.
We have investigated the transient behavior of 1D fully developed Poiseuille viscoelastic flow under finite pressure gradient described by the Oldroyd-B and Leonov constitutive equations. For analysis we employ a simple $2^{nd}$ order discretization scheme such as central difference for space and the Crank-Nicolson for time approximation. For the analysis of the Oldroyd-B model, we also apply the analytical solution, which is obtained again in this work in terms of elementary solution procedure simpler than the previous one (Waters and King, 1970). Both models demonstrate qualitatively similar solutions, but their eventual steady flowrate exhibits noticeable difference due to the absence or presence of shear thinning behavior. In the inertialess flow, the flowrate instantaneously attains a large value corresponding to the Newtonian creeping flow and then decreases to its steady value when the applied pressure gradient is low. However with finite liquid density the flow field shows severe fluctuation even accompanying reversals of flow directions. As the assigned pressure gradient increases, the flowrate achieves its steady value significantly higher than its value during oscillations after quite long period of time. We have also illustrated comparison between 1D and 2D results and possible mechanism of complex 2D flow rearrangement employing a previous solution of [mite element computation. In addition, we discuss some mathematical points regarding missing boundary conditions in 2D modeling due to the change of the type of differential equations when varying from inertialess to inertial flow.
A finite element method is employed fer a flow analysis of the melt spinning process of a non-circular fiber, a PET(polyethylene terephthalate) filament. The flow field is divided into two regions of die channel and spin-line. A two dimensional analysis is used for the flow within the die channel and a three dimensional analysis fur the flow along the spin-line. The Newtonian fluid is assumed for the PET melt and material properties are considered to be constant except for the viscosity. Effects of gravitation, air drag force, and surface tension are neglected. Although the spin-line length is 4.5 m only five millimeters from the spinneret are evaluated as the domain of the analysis. Isothermal and non-isothermal cases are studied fer the flow within the die channel. The relationship between the mass flow rate and the pressure gradient is presented for the two cases. Three dimensional flow along the spin-line is obtained by assuming isothermal conditions. It is shown that changes in velocity and cross-sectional shape occur mostly in the region of 1mm from the die exit.
