  • This study examines the structure of the problems of Korean newspaper reporting raised by the civil society. Based on the differences in the mode of presentation, the problems of newspaper reporting were classified into three types; prominent, associated, and isolate problem. The relations among these problems were defined as the degree of co-occurrence in the monitoring articles. A network analysis was conducted to examine the structure of the problems in Korean newspaper reporting. A $33{\times}33$ similarity matrix of the problems was created by analyzing the data from one monitoring report and two weekly media critics newspapers. The results showed that of the 33 problems, most of them were mentioned as prominent or associated problems. The problems related to the news contents were mostly treated as prominent ones, while the problems about the news writing and reporting styles were frequently treated as associated ones. The network structure of newspaper criticism based on the co-occurrence of 33 problems were divided into six clusters. Among them, the most central was the group including the problems of "unfairness,' "biased interpretation," and "vagueness". In addition, the problems were found to have different roles in the network. Of the 33 problems, two were liaisons and four were attached isolates, indicating the hierarchical structure of problems in newspaper reporting. These results were discussed in the light of two viewpoints; the absence of objective criteria in media criticism, and the need for the comparisons of the current study's results with the opinions of newspaper readers and journalists. finally, the implications for the future studies were presented.

The traditional form of offline newspaper markets, which has created the mainstream news delivery market, have been losing large amounts of power due to the emergence of online media. On the other hand, online media armed with its ability to post breaking news almost as it occurs has increased its influence and popularity at a rapid speed. However, since the exposure time and readership of online newspapers are less than their offline counterparts online media has a high dependence on sensational titles and somewhat exaggerating headlines rather than the objective and recapitulative headlines which are preferred. This paper will examine the function and significance of headlines, and conduct a comparative analysis on contents and forms of the headlines in offline newspaper and online newspaper in order to identify the characteristics of each newspaper. Through comparisons, it examines the types of headlines and the transference of headlines. In addition, it examines the differences in recognition of copy editors according to media in determining the headline, and it illuminates which type of headlines is preferred in order to instigate readers to read online newspapers. The analysis results of title-transferring cases in offline newspaper and online newspapers are that offline newspapers try to convey the contents accurately by making use of an information-transferring headline, while attention-attracting headline or subject-hiding headlines tend to be used for attracting the eye of readers. In addition, analysis results of headlines that are put on the top with a click counts in online newspapers are that attention-attracting headlines are the majority, while subject-hiding headlines that are hardly used in offline newspapers, are well-used in online newspapers. In an interview with copy editors, they responded that offline editors focus on the fact-transference in determining the title, while online editors put the weight on immediacy in the delivery of news and the function of guiding readers.

  • This thesis reviews the process in which the regulation systems against ownership concentration of newspapers established with the opportunity of legislation of the periodical act in 1987 was reinforced as they were all amended to the newspaper act in 2005 and as they were again amended in 2009 it came to confront crisis in the aspect of press law legislation history. The regulation systems against ownership concentration of newspapers established based on the principle of legality of newspaper function in the Clause 3, the Article 21 of Constitution was reinforced as the newspaper act in 2005 and in 2006 they began to shrink following the Constitution Court decision against newspaper act. As newspaper act and broadcast act are revised in 2009, regulation against combining the management of newspapers with broadcast and regulation against owning multiple number of newspapers came not to exist. Because in this process, the opposition party also allowed limited cross-ownership of newspaper and broadcast, it can be said that the system of newspaper ownership regulation confronted the crisis of dissolution. The instruction of regulation alleviation in a short period of time in spite of the fact that regulation alleviation which allows cross-ownership of newspaper and broadcast is the matter of policy that should be decided after long-term review of the change of media environment and the progress of the power of domination of public opinion is dangerous. Newspapers are strong media with terrestrial broadcast in formation of public opinion on politics. It's because it is difficult to ignore the worry that the power of domination of public opinion of the newspapers which are in oligopoly of newspaper public opinion market can be spreaded to the territory of report broadcast. From the point of view that there is probability for democracy to be ultimately threatened due to the shrink of political Darwinism caused by concentration of media ownership, the alleviation of ownership concentration of newspapers should have premise of long-term social discussion.

  • The Code of Ethics for Newspaper Advertising in Korea, first implemented in 1976 and subsequently revised in 1976, 1996, and 2021, is a critical regulatory instrument for the country's advertising sector. However, the specialized domain of "advertising ethics," particularly the "code of advertising ethics," remains under-explored. This research addresses this scholarly gap, providing an empirical analysis of the 2021 amendment's revision trajectory. This study employs a robust methodological approach, integrating expert interviews and small-group AHP-based surveys. This approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of the revision needs, referencing existing ethical codes studies, and comparing similar ethics codes nationally and internationally. The research further investigates key challenges such as personal data protection and copyright issues in the rapidly evolving digital media landscape, while preserving the existing code's inherent value. The findings are expected to significantly contribute to the emerging field of advertising ethics in Korea, offering practical implications for future code revisions.

  • Web offset newspaper prints is the most widely used printing process in domestic printing industry, but there are no industry-wide specifications for press control to assure consistent quality across newspaper printing plants. As newspaper printing becomes more of a commodity and less of an art, it is necessary to develop the print quality specification standard suitable for Korea web offset newspaper printing field. There are a few commonly employed printing standards such as, SNAP (Specification for Non-Heatset Publication) of the US, IFRA(INCA-FIEJ Research Association), J-color (Japan printing machinery association). And there exists KS for domestic standards, however, since it has been directly imported from ISO standards, there are discrepancies in printing materials and media. This paper aims to examine the color reproduction quality of domestic web offset newspaper prints by comparing with foreign standards. Printing experiments on this study have been performed at one of the domestic newspaper printing companies. The color reproduction properties of the web offset newspaper prints are measured by means of densitometry and colorimetry. These measures are evaluated comapratively with the international standards by means of analyzing, the major factors that determine the color reproduction quality of web offset newspaper prints.
