  • This study examined the development of the children's reading movement, focusing on the children's library establishment movement and reading guidance theory published in the Dong-A Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo in the 1920s and 30s. This paper analyzed the following contents. First, this study explored the background meaning that emphasized children's reading in the 1920s and 30s and discussions on the establishment of a children's library. In the process, this study examined the relationship between the national movement during the Japanese colonial period and children's education, and the meaning of reading at the time. Second, in this study, the development of children's library movement that was actively developed at the time and a methodology of reading education presented through the reading section were reviewed. It was this period that everyone was more interested in children's reading education than ever before. In addition, as the children's library movement was actively developed, a number of "Sonyeon Mungo" was established in various places. Meanwhile, in the reading section of the newspaper, a number of teaching methods for reading at school and at home were published, and examples were presented through advanced overseas reading education model. From the results of this analysis, it can be seen that the 1920s and 30s were the period when the children's reading movement was actively developed.

  • Experiments were carried out to pursue the availability and the feasibility of utilizable cellulosic materials as substrate for the production of cellulosic single cell protein. The resuluts were obtained as fellows. 1. Effects of carbolydrates as a sole carton source on the growth of Cellulomonas flavigena KIST 321 were examined. The result showed that cellulose and xylose would be most utlizable for cell mass production. 2. Alkaline treated waste papers and clothes resulted in good growth of the organism than intact ones did. However the waste papers as substrate of cellulosic fermentation were not digestible, even if the meterial was treated with alkalies. 3. Rice straw, rape straw and panic grass appeared to be good substrates for the cell mass production. 4. Leaves were proved to be a good substrate for the cell mass production, but wood sawdust was hardly digested by merely alkaline treatment. 5. When cellulosic wastes as the substrate were examined into the concentration of alkaline solution, the result suggested that the best productivity of cell mass from cellulosic materials was obtained on treatment with 0.8∼1.0% NaOH solution. 6. The productivity of cell mass was increased by washing out with water after alkaline treatment of newspaper, pine sawdust, lime sawdust and pine leaf.

  • This experimental research as media effect study explores the effect of the current documentary that deals with radioactive contamination widely spread by fukushima nuclear accident on political and social recognition of domestic audience. Proceeding studies about media effect dealt mainly with news contents of TV, newspaper and internet. However studies on the effect of current documentary as non news contents on audience that provide us with profound information by various subjects are very few. Especially it is difficult to find studies about disaster documentary dealing with radioactive contamination having much effect on global environment. Accordingly this research implemented experimental study to find out the effect of current documentary that deals with radioactive contamination by fukushima nuclear accident on political and social recognition of audience. This research found that subjects exposed to the current documentary considered outdated nuclear power plant more seriously, supporting the opposition party more positively, claiming shutdown of outdated nuclear power plant, and opposing additive construction of nuclear power plant than subjects not exposed to the current documentary.

  • A tendency to ignore the existence of public space in Korea under the Japanese colonial period seems to be driven from nationalist historiography in which all historical events under the colonial power have to be interpreted in terms of militant controls and resistances against them. Historical approach to mass media of that period has lasted to be saturated with the tendency and forced history students to stick to the nationalist guidelines. Struggles against Japanese imperial power by national-capital-operated newspaper have been a main menu of studies on the period's communication. The media were often hailed as fighting the colonial power for nation's independence. The present thesis aims to criticize the nationalist point of view and to reveal that nationalist interpretations may miss a variety of historical information. Even under the severe surveillance of colonial police some journalists tried either to inform officially or to smuggle into informed groups. The colonized society could experienced fields of public-ness throughout the practices of such as media fields, cultural fields, political fields. Those fields, of course, didn't come from the graceful favor of the colonial power but from the construction of the colonized. The public-ness seemed to be born for the easiness of control, but became later a constructed field of public-ness with which the colonized semiotically wrestled the power and grew a modern type of political (un)consciousness. Depicting what happened just before 815 liberation day in Korea the present paper showed that the less nationalist historiography can render help to those seeking political practices of the colonized in a micro-level.

  • This study was performed to investigate the stress level and health-related behaviors of nurses and to provide basic information for developing educational programs in the health care field. The subjects of this study were 197 nurses and 94 nursing assistants working at hospitals in the Kyung-nam area. A survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire in November, 2002. The results were as follows : The average age and work experience of the subjects were 26.9 and 5.6 years, respectively. The number of respondents in the shift and non-shift operations was equally distributed. The mean height and weight were 161.2 cm and 52.7 kg, respectively. Even though the average body mass index (BMI) and obesity index were normal in the subjects, 9.2% of the subjects were overweight/obese, while 28.9% of the subjects were under weight, according to the obesity index. The mean score of stress was 27.5 \pm$\pm$ 4.6 out of 50 points. Most of the subjects were highly stressed about the amount of their work, problems regarding their future, and relationships with their superiors. With regard to changes in food intake due to stress, 44.1% showed an increased intake, while 32.3% showed a reduced intake. The degree of health consciousness of the married nurses, those over 36 years of age, and those with over 10 years of nursing experience was significantly higher than that of the unmarried nurses, those under 35 years of age, and those with under 10 years of nursing experience (p<0.01). Fifty-one point three percent of the subjects thought their health status was unhealthy. Fifty-seven percent of the subjects had tried weight control. Their main reason for trying weight control was to have a slender figure (62.3%), and their methods of weight control were moderation in intake(45.6%), exercise and dieting (36.9%). TV/radio (49.5%) and newspaper/magazines (47.1%) were the primary sources of nutritional and health information for the subjects, and professional (25.1%) and the internet (13.4%) were ranked relatively highly. The food components of most concern to the subjects during meal time were (in order of importance) fats (51.9%), calories (40.2%) and salt (35.1%). The subjects considered 'taking a rest' (73.5%) as the most important factor in maintaining an optimal health status, followed by self-relaxation (56.4%), moderation in diet (39.5), bathing or using a sauna (25.7%) and exercising (22.7%).

  • This study was conducted to investigate housewives' purchase behavior and needs for information on food safety. The data were collected from 275 housewives over the age of 20 living in Seoul and metropolitan areas from March 9 to April 3 in 2009. The result of this study showed that 'checking expiration date' topped with 4.59 in the purchase behavior for food safety followed by 'buying domestics' (4.08) and 'considering food safety' (3.66). The study also showed that only 18.5% of the respondents said that they have an experience of education for food safety, and 'environmental hormones' was the highest with 89.1% in the percentage of correct answer but 'mad cow disease' was the lowest with 25.8%. Also total degree of knowledge for food hazards was an average of 8.56 out of 13. The respondents' degree of information search for food safety was generally low at 2.61 and tv/radio topped the list of information sources with 4.04, followed by newspaper/magazine (3.80), internet (3.44), and family/relatives/friends (3.39). Finally, degree of information needs for food safety was generally high with 3.82. Therefore, government, producers, distributers and academic researchers must provide consumers collective and sufficient information about the food safety and hazards through the diverse information sources. Also they have to play their respective roles in developing and executing feasible education program for consumers.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the impacts of the lasciviousness of news anchor's mention on viewers'negative emotions, news reliability and their attitude towards the broadcasting company. This study also analyzed the moderating effect of anchor's attractiveness and viewers' sex. First, the more lascivious anchor's mention in news report gets, the more negative the viewers felt. Second, stronger lascivious expressions of news anchor's mention in news report had a negative effect on news reliability. Third, the moderating effect of the anchor attractiveness was found when news anchor's mention influences the viewers' attitude towards the broadcasting company : those who thought news anchor attractive showed less negative emotions and their news reliability and attitude towards the broadcasting company were higher compared to those who thought news anchor less attractive. Fourth, the moderating effect of the viewers' sex was found when news anchor's mention influences on viewers' negative emotions and the viewers' attitude towards the broadcasting company. This study has an academic and practical implication by studying the lasciviousness of news anchor's mention and anchor's attractiveness. This study is also a new approach of integrating the fields of journalism : News report and Anchor into the marketing fields : Attractiveness and Reliability. This can be meaningful for both journalism and marketing field.

  • This study was conducted to obtain a basic information related to a more systematic safety education and measures against children's accidents by a descriptive survey with regard to accidents actually experienced by elementary schoolers, their perceived safety education activities and school facilities to their safety lives. The data was collected among 1,654 pupils, belonging to the 5th and 6th grades in Pusan from Nov. 20 to Dec. 1, 2000. The data was analyzed using SPSSWIN(7.5). The results were as follows ; 1. According to the perception by elementary schoolers, they received safety life instruction at school in most cases from teachers in charge of their own class (41.0%). Such safety education was provided often during formal classes(24.4%). Traffic guidance was given by parents, highest in frequency(67.3%). 2. Matters as most often treated during safety life instruction were safety knowledge or dangerous things(37.5%). A majority of notices of school safety instruction were presented sometimes(48.4%). Source of knowledge about safety lives included teacher (35.3%), parents(32.9%), TV and newspaper (29.9%). As a source of knowledge of emergency treatment, school nurses were accounted for 41.3% that was highest. 3.Among the 1,654 students, 91.8% experienced at least more than one case of safety accident. The most frequent type and cause of safety accident were wound(33.7%). and self-carelessness(38.4%) respectively. In most cases, the subject experienced such accident during a break time(32.2%) and at a playgrounds. Part of body as most often damaged by accidents were arms and legs, 25.4% higher than any other sides problem solving measures against the accident were taken by school nurse in most cases, 44.8% in percentage point. 4. Those students' perceived safety management of school facilities showed that they considered classroom facilities as most safe (61.6%), while playground facilities as least safe(42.8%). They also responded that the treatment of glass fragments or stones at playground is the most important item of safety management.

  • Although it is well-known that environmental noise can lead to hearing loss in individuals, the true extent of subway noise effects in the general population remains poorly understood. The purpose of the present study is to see changes of acoustic reflex thresholds and speech perception scores when passengers listen to music presented from their personal listening device in the subway. Forty subjects with normal hearing participated being divided into two groups, experimental and control groups. As a baseline, all subjects were measured by acoustic reflex thresholds in five test frequencies and Korean speech perception in noise (KSPIN) test at 0 and -5 dB SNR. In the experiment, the control group read newspaper or magazine in the subway noise, whereas the experimental group listened to music presented from their smartphone under the subway noise through speakers at 73.45 dBA for 60 min. After completing the experiment, two groups also conducted both acoustic reflex thresholds and KSPIN tests in the same condition as the baseline. The results showed that there was a significant difference of correct percent in speech-in-noise test between experimental and control groups and of that between two signal-to-noise ratios, which means the double noise exposure of 60 min might cause some degradation of speech perception when noise increases compared to only subway noise condition that was not statistically significant difference. We concluded that a risk of some degraded speech perception ability would be expected when passengers have a habit of listening to music in the subway noisy situation for a long duration.
