  • The new model proposed in this paper is the hidden Markov mesh model or the 2D HMM with the causality of top-down and left-right direction. With the addition of the causality constraint, two algorithms for the evaluation of a model and the maximum likelihood estimation of model parameters have been developed theoretically which are based on the forward-backward algorithm. It is a more natural extension of the 1D HMM than other 2D models. The proposed method will provide a useful way of modeling highly variable image patterns such as offline cursive characters.

  • Since 1997, when a new educational system that encourages faculties instead of departments in universities is first introduced, students have much more chance to choose and leave their majors than before. As a result, colleges of basic arts and sciences confront with a serious problem since lots of students have left their majors at the colleges. In this paper, we analyze and provide a predictive model for those students in a university using decision trees.

  • In this article, we introduce and study the Gorenstein cotorsion dimension of modules and rings. It is shown that this dimension has nice properties when the ring in question is left GF-closed. The relations between the Gorenstein cotorsion dimension and other homological dimensions are discussed. Finally, we give some new characterizations of weak Gorenstein global dimension of coherent rings in terms of Gorenstein cotorsion modules.

  • Given a C-dynamical system (A, G, $\alpha$) with a locally compact group G, two kinds of C-algebras are made from it, called the full C-crossed product and the reduced C-crossed product. In this paper, we extend the theory of the classical C-crossed product to the C-dynamical system (A, G, $\alpha$) with a left-cancellative semigroup M with unit. We construct a new C-algebra A $\alpha$rM, the reduced crossed product of A by the semigroup M under the action $\alpha$ and investigate some properties of A $\alpha$rM.

  • A class of new observers in descriptor linear systems, proportional-derivative(PD) observers, are proposed. A parametric design approach for such observers is proposed based on a complete parametric solution to the generalized Sylvester matrix equation. The approach provides complete parameterizations for all the observer gains, gives the parametric expression for the corresponding left eigenvector matrix of the observer system matrix, realizes elimination of impulsive behaviors, and guarantees the regularity of the observer system.

  • In this paper we propose a new method for obtaining two way switchable LCD. For this two domain vertical alignment LCD is used. A two way LCD is able to show different images on the same screen based on left and right perspectives. Viewing angle dependence of different grey levels of transmittance for the polar angles 0, +45 and -45 degree are also found out.

  • Two augmented integrators are sufficient as memory elements to realize an arbitrary second-order voltage transfer funtion which has complex poles in left-half S-plane, where S is a complex variable. The augmented integrator is characterized by transfer funtion B/(S+A), where A and B are real constant.

  • A new type of motor-driven Total Artificial Heart (TAH) system with rolling-ball mechanism has been developed. To test its performance as a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), LVAD is controlled to bypass blood for impaired heart triggered by the R-wave in ECG. Results of the test with a Mock Circulation System (MCS) and an animal experiment with a dog are also included. More powerful system using a brushless DC motor has been developed and its control scheme is represented.
