Remote Impedance-based Loose Bolt Inspection Using a Radio-Frequency Active Sensing Node

  • This paper introduces an active sensing node using radio-frequency (RF) telemetry. This device has brought the traditional impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technique to a new paradigm. The RF active sensing node consists of a miniaturized impedance measuring device (AD5933), a microcontroller (ATmega128L), and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (XBee). A macro-fiber composite (MFC) patch interrogates a host structure by using a self-sensing technique of the miniaturized impedance measuring device. All the process including structural interrogation, data acquisition, signal processing, and damage diagnostic is being performed at the sensor location by the microcontroller. The RF transmitter is used to communicate the current status of the host structure. The feasibility of the proposed SHM strategy is verified through an experimental study inspecting loose bolts in a bolt-jointed aluminum structure.

  • Unlike non-ionic clathrate hydrates stably formed by van der Waals interaction between a guest molecule and a surrounding host framework, ionic clathrate hydrates are stabilized by ionic interaction between an ionic guest molecule and the host water-framework. Here, we firstly described the stable entrapment of the superoxide ions in ${\gamma}$-irradiated $Me_4NOH+O_2$ hydrate. Owing to peculiar direct guest-guest ionic interaction, the lattice structure of ${\gamma}$-irradiated $Me_4NOH+O_2$ hydrate shows significant change of lattice contraction behavior even at relatively high temperature(120K). Particularly, we note that ionic-induced dimensional change is much greater than thermal-induced change. Such findings are expected to provide useful information for a better understanding of unrevealed nature of clathrate hydrate fields.

Role of inflammasomes in inflammatory autoimmune rheumatic diseases

  • Inflammasomes are intracellular multiprotein complexes that coordinate anti-pathogenic host defense during inflammatory responses in myeloid cells, especially macrophages. Inflammasome activation leads to activation of caspase-1, resulting in the induction of pyroptosis and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines including interleukin $(IL)-1{\beta}$ and IL-18. Although the inflammatory response is an innate host defense mechanism, chronic inflammation is the main cause of rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and $Sj{\ddot{o}}gren^{\prime}s$ syndrome (SS). Since rheumatic diseases are inflammatory/autoimmune disorders, it is reasonable to hypothesize that inflammasomes activated during the inflammatory response play a pivotal role in development and progression of these diseases. Indeed, previous studies have provided important observations that inflammasomes are actively involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory/autoimmune rheumatic diseases. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on several types of inflammasomes during macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses and discuss recent research regarding the role of inflammasomes in the pathogenesis of inflammatory/autoimmune rheumatic diseases. This avenue of research could provide new insights for the development of promising therapeutics to treat inflammatory/autoimmune rheumatic diseases.

  • In this paper, we propose a data encoding algorithm for two-dimensional barcode system. In general, one-dimensional barcode is just a key which can access detailed information to the host computer database. But the two-dimensional barcode is a new technology which can obtain high density information without access to the host computer database. We implemented encoding algorithm for Data Matrix Barcode which is the most widely used among the many kind of two-dimensional barcodes. And we marked to a real object using Digital Signal Processor(DSP) Marking System. The performance of proposed algorithm is verified through the result of marking work.

PC를 이용한 NC제어장치의 개발 (Development of NC controller using personal computer)

  • We developed a model of NC controller with IBM-PC as a host cpu and integlligent NC servo controller for 2 axes that can be expaned to 4 axes. Basic conceptions, including hardware structure design, servo controller design, communication protocol, and interpolation hardware design was already publicated on '87 KIEE conference. Following this, we focussed on the emulation of tyhe controller with X-Y table as complete NC machine experimenting some drawings made by NC code program that can be edited and executed in automatic on single step mode. In addition we designed the M.S.T functions with PLC and tested for M-function timing. Finally, we designed NC interface to fit with M-function output and we contructed total system of NC controller with IBM PC host with the result of successful development of new NC model.

  • 한국산 미기록과 애기버섯벌레과(Ciidae, Leach)(신칭)에 속한 Octotemnus Melli$\acute{e}$(딱정벌레목: 거저리상과)(신칭)의 분류학적 연구를 수행하였다. 이 속에 속한 Octotemnus laminifrons (Motschulsky)(턱애기버섯벌레)(신칭)와 Octotemnus japonicus Miyatake(일본턱애기버섯벌레)(신칭) 등 2종을 국내에서 처음으로 분류학적으로 검토하고 야외관찰과 실내사육을 통해 숙주버섯을 밝혔다. 각 종에 대한 검색키, 기재문, 진단형질 그림, 성충사진과 숙주버섯을 제공하였다.

Improved High Rate Capabilities of Composite Cathodes for Lithium Ion Batteries

  • In an attempt to achieve high rate capability of cell, a new composite cathode was prepared by mixing host compounds with MWCNTs and Super P carbon. Because MWCNTs generally have bundle-type morphologies, it is not easy to get completely separated form. Successful dispersion of divided small bundles between the host particles keeps electrochemical contacts among the particles and plays a significant role in the buffer action as a volume-change absorber. Relative amounts and distributions of the additives are important for design of the electrode for high power application of lithium ion batteries.

First Report of Gymnosporangium globosum Causing American Hawthorn Rust in Korea

  • Field surveys and specimen collections of the rust fungal pathogen Gymnosporangium were carried out for 15 years from 1985 through 1999 in various locations of Korea. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations of morphological characteristics of aecia from the collected specimens revealed that Gymnosporangium globosum is the causal agent of American hawthorn rust disease on Crataegus pinnatifida and C. pinnatifida varmajor. The host plants are new for this rust fungus. G. globosum was found only in Gyeonggi and Chungbuk provinces, indicating that its distribution in Korea is limited. This is a first full description on morphological characters of aecia of G. globosum in Korea.

기생현화식물의 흡기 구조에 관하여 (On the Structure of th haustoria of Some Parasitic Flowering Plants)

  • The parasitic flowering plants obtain nutrients and water from their host plants through a parasitic organ, haustorium, which connects both structurally and physiologically host and parasite. The parasitism in angiosperms thus can be understood from the knowledge of the haustorial structure. The haustoria have evolve convergently and independently in several unrelated taxa; therefore, they have similar morphology. Many anatomical studies on the haustoria in several parasites in the pst have been carried out by light microscopy. Ultrastructural studies on the haustoria, which are started from the end of 1060s', have provided new information relating to the phenomenon of parasitism in angiosperms. The purpose of this paper is to introduce and compare the structure of haustoria between parasitic plants. The results may help an understanding of phylogenetic relationships of parasitic angiosperms. The haustoria of some families, such as Santalaceae, Orobancaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Loranthaceae (or Viscaceae), and Convolvulaceae (Cuscuta) will be discussed.
