A Case Study on the Technology Tree Methodology of Energy R&D (에너지연구개발(R&D)위한 기술계통도(Technology Tree) 기획방법론 활용 사례 - 에너지저장 기술 중심으로)

  • Government spending on research and development increased continuously is much more important to decision-making methodology for rational investment. Rely on a group of minority experts in the application of a general methodology, a tipping effect occur in specific technology field or difficult balanced procedure and objective control to maintain. This paper presents a qualitative-quantitative methodology to avoid such risks by utilizing Technology-Tree pertaining to energy R&D planning of the government Energy Technology Development program. Especially Energy Technology Development program "energy storage system" is applied to the analysis of Technology-Tree, mapping and analysis of existing government-supported projects during the recent 5 years, is derived essential missing elements of the technology value chain. This study suggests that significant evidence is utilized for improving efficiency of government R&D budget considering the importance of technology, domestic research-based and so forth, could be used to implement the R&D project planning.

  • The performance in scientific contribution of renewable energy R&D has been overlooked, as it is shown in terms of industrial aspect. This paper analyzed the R&D efficiency of scientific aspects of each renewable energy resource in 2008-2012. Total R&D fund and the number of supported projects are selected as input variables, and the number of patents and papers as output variables to analyze the direct efficiency using DEA method. Through the analysis, it determines the efficiency of each energy resource R&D, and investigated the causes of inefficiency. This study has meaning to include entire renewable energy sources for the analysis, and is expected to serve as an important reference in policy making.

  • The transition from fossil to renewable energy is inevitable due to fossil depletion. So, Renewable energy is very important for energy security and economic growth although it's R&D is long-term and high risky project. We propose new valuation method which combined system dynamics and compound real option method for long-term and high risk projects such as renewable energy. This method can show dynamic valuation results for the complex causal interaction and be easy for Monte-Carlo simulation to estimate volatility. And it can reflect the value of flexible decision for uncertainty. We applied the empirical analysis for Korea's photovoltaic industry by using this method. As results by empirical analysis, photovoltaic's R&D has high valuation using this method compared by traditional valuation methods such as DCF.

  • Recently, a project to build a carbon zero island with no carbon emissions has been carried out by replacing diesel generators with renewable energy sources in island areas where diesel generators supplied local loads as independent systems. To minimize damage to the lives of islanders, low noise wind generators should be installed by adjusting the rated speed. In islands with low loads, wind turbines that are more efficient than medium-sized wind turbines should be installed. In this study, the generator field analysis and characteristics were analyzed to develop 230 kW-class low wind medium-wind turbine technology. The electromagnetic field analysis program used Maxwell. As a result, the cogging torque was reduced, and the initial maneuver wind speed and loss value were lowered. Hence, the output amount was increased with high efficiency.

  • Gas hydrates draw great at tent ion recently as a new clean energy resources substituting conventional oil and gas hydrate its presumed huge amount of volume reaching 10 trillion tons of gas and environmentally friendly characteristics. Gas hydrate can contribute to the rapidly increasing consumption of natural gas in Korea and achieve the self support target by 2010 which is $30\%$ of total natural gas demand. This paper shows the importance and benefit of Gas hydrate comparing with new & renewable energy in Korea

  • Advanced biofuels are recognized as a key tool to mitigate the $CO_2$ emissions in the transport sector. Active R&D works have been carried out but there are still some major barriers to implement the technology. In this paper, recent developments on the advanced biofuels' technology are reviewed and the major barriers to commercialization of the biofuels will be discussed.

  • U.S. National Research Council proposed benefits framework for energy R&D project as economic benefits, environmental benefits, security benefits and knowledge benefits. Following this framework, U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory evaluated the projected benefits of Federal Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Programs in the indicators of energy-expenditure savings, energy system cost savings, $CO_2$ emissions reductions. oil savings, natural gas saving and avoided additions to central conventional power. As this result, geothermal energy have predominant position in the energy-expenditure savings, natural gas saving and avoided addi t ions to central conventional power to FY2050. The projected benefits, in monetary value, of the whole supply-potential of geothermal energy in Korea were evaluated as 480.2 billion Won, 43.1 billion Won and 135.8 billion Won for the private energy-cost savings, social environmental-cost savings, and import energy-cost saving, respectively.

  • Non-used waste heat has recently been paid special attention due to several global warming regulation and energy cost rising. In this study, therefore, thermal energy storage system which uses a solid type heat media has been investigated about the possibility of heat accumulation and heat release for thermal energy storage system. 35kWh of bench-scale thermal storage system was used to investigate the characteristics of the solid type heat media. From the result, it is shown that a solid type heat media should be divided to supply constant heat to the customers' side. It is also shown the flow direction should be considered to reduce temperature difference between top and bottom sides in the thermal storage system.

  • 태양광 분야에서 일본은 기술 및 보급에 성공한 대표적인 사례로서 거론된다. 태양광의 에너지자원화를 목표로 30여 년간 지속적으로 국가차원의 기술개발 및 보급을 정책 사업화하여 진행시켰고 성공적인 선행 단계를 밟아 왔다. 현재까지의 성공을 기반으로 [태양광 비전 2030]을 수립하여 실현가능한 장기 목표를 구체화하는 단계에 있다. 이에 일본 태양광 산업 및 기술개발 방향에 대한 분석을 통해 오늘 우리에게 주는 시사점을 도출하여 차세대 성장 동력 산업이 될 국내 태양광분야의 발전을 위한 지표로 삼고자 한다.

  • 세계적으로 신재생에너지에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 이에 대한 국가적인 지원이 2006년에 1000억을 넘어 불과 3년 만에 그 2배인 2000억을 돌파했다. 또한 내년부터 2015년까지 민 관 합동으로 총 40조원을 신재생에너지에 투입한다고 보고되어 주위를 술렁이게 하고 있다. 우리는 신재생에너지가 더 이상 일부 국한된 기관이나 기업만의 단순 관심분야가 아닌, 세계 시장에서의 우위를 점령하기 위한 국가차원의 광대한 경쟁분야임을 다시 한번 인식해야 한다. 이러한 시점에서 국내 신재생에너지 R&D산업의 과거 발자취를 통해 미래에 나아가야 할 방향을 예측해 보는 것은 상당히 의미가 있을 것으로 생각된다. 본 고에서는 신재생에너지 분야 중 현재 가장 큰 비중을 차지하고 있는 태양광 분야에 초점을 맞추어 보았다. 그간 진행되거나 현재 진행되고 있는 R&D관련 데이터들을 수집하여 다양한 방면으로 검토해본 결과 눈에 띄는 경향을 일부 확인할 수 있었는데, 이를 통해 향후 태양광 R&D산업이 나아가야 할 방향을 예측해 보고자한다.
