  • With changing systems of wealth creation around the 21st century, crafts(traditional and industrial crafts) are affected by the trend of changes or lead the trend, that is to say, a turning point of paradigm has come. Values of crafts give the value of users, and the tradition and modern coexists in the trend of times changing from the tradition to the modern so crafts artists’ works are diversified and used in design industries. Based on a place of expression showing various beauty of crafts, identity of design is established through ‘Craft Consilience’ of intangible cultural assets, master craftsman, crafts artists, crafts industries, and crafts departments. As master craftsman and furniture designers meet together to mix master craftsman’s idea with designers’ idea, the new Korean crafts furniture is suggested.

  • An architecture as a creative work can be expressed through its diverse conditions, such as humanitarian and social factors, the natural environments and also the each situations of that period. Thus, architects create their work based upon the experience that they have achieved in the past as well as the informations they have accumulated over the time. By this process architects used to achieve the design they hope to aim, whether it is made intentionally or not. This means that architects used to understand their works as it have the factors of the consciousness and the unconsciousness. This research looks to achieve a new design method by finding out how architects express the tradition in contemporary architecture through a psychoanalytic point of view. Hence, this research shall be a significance if it is applied to the process of modern architectural work with tradition concepts.

  • The purpose of this paper was to analyze the meanings and issues which had been expressed through the domestic fashion magazine from 1998 to 2002. The natural intension issue was caused by rapid development of modern civilization and it kneaded with poison of ecosystem destruction. It was expressed by pure and clean fashion image, simple appearance and natural color. The reconciliation issue between the east and west country, man and woman and science and art which are opposed together of the trade by mixture of fashion was expressed became the paternity. It pursued a tradition and the past, which pursue new things and the specific charters with spouted, and intension is expressed. The issues of over all fashion purses human being's happiness for which fashion design have existed and changed.

  • Scandinavian countries have hold tradition shared historically and culturally in common, brought the weighty traditional thoughts enabled to develop their unique culture. Since 1940s, Scandinavian design could pervade with affectionate forms and practical effectiveness with worldwide popularity. It was brought by creation of new and useful forms for the convenience in life, functionalism but not bounded by fashion of it. This study tried into the meaning of their history of modern furnishings design based on the development background of furnishings design, its trends, designers and their work focused around Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. Scandinavian furnishings is a functional furnishings reconciled to natural material and human life exactly correspond to the taste of the generation unrestricted from the tradition of contemporary and compact design preference or classic favored preference. The practicality and exquisite techniques of Scandinavian furnishings lies within the realm of possibility for studiously love of the world.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the current theory education system and students'awareness about Korean identity by analysing four-year curricula of Interior design programs in domestic universities and questionnaires of 468 junior and senior students who have taken the history of interior design. This study is the first step of continuous research for establishing new model of education related to Korean tradition. Following three issues - $\circled1$degree of knowledge and awareness of Korean university students majoring interior design about Korean identity, $\circled2$extent of the coverage of theoretical education for korean tradition in curricula of interior programs, $\circled3$extent of the application of Korean identity as a design theme in studio classes - were mainly analysed.

Development of a Bag Design by Incorporating and Adapting the Formative Characteristics of the Traditional Bandaji Chest (전통가구 반닫이의 형태적 특성을 활용한 가방디자인 개발)

  • As interest in the environment and sustainability increases, a tendency to pursue eco-design is emerging. Sustainable design coincides with the Korean aesthetic sense of applying the principle of the circulation of nature. This study examined Korean traditional furniture, Bandaji, from the perspective of historical and cultural sustainability and extracted and adopted a sustainability-related motif. The purpose of this study was to develop a creative bag design that reflects Korean tradition and strengthens artistry. First, a bag was produced based on the morphological characteristics of Gyeonggi-do Bandaji. Second, though the original overall design was maintained, the decorative patterns were modified by, for example, increasing the number of ear decorations on the surface of the bag and reducing the number of traps. Third, a new geometric pattern was created for the surface of the bag; this entailed moving the position of the handle-shaped ear ornament and the leather. Fourth, new decorative patterns were drawn on the surface. This study is meaningful in that it presents a sustainable bag production methodology that reflects Korean aesthetics. It also showcases a designer's unique, creative, and artistic bag design. It is expected that design work inspired by Korean formative beauty will be an opportunity to simultaneously utilize and support various Korean cultural assets and artworks.

A Study on the Five Colors Appearing in the Traditional Korean Bojaki of the Era of Chosun Dynasty (조선시대 보자기에 나타나는 오방색에 관한 고찰)

  • For making something to use as a tool since the emergence of mankind, the initial pragmatic purpose has transformed into a new genre of art over time. Things defined like this have rooted in our culture as tradition so far. In the midst of today's various trends, a reflection of tradition and a modern search for tradition by re-creating it are much more needed. To any people in any time, a new trend would undeniably develop on the basis of its previous tradition in any form. The colors appearing in such artwork are also an expression of each people's unconscious potentiality as essential grounds for human aesthetic. The traditional Korean Bojaki, which was made out of women's pragmatic mind trying to recycle trashy pieces of cloth in the 19th century of Chosun Dynasty, appears as a symbolization of our nation's original form in unconsciousness. It includes Confucianism, Buddhism, Zen and the Yin-Yang and Five Elements thought, which have been together with naturalism. The five colors appearing in the Yin-Yang and Five Elements are the basis. Fourteen selected samples around the five colors seen in the color scheme of the Chosun era's Bojaki were measured and their color values were found by analyzing them based on HCV(Hue, Chroma, Value)of the five primary colors as well as the five secondary colors. After choosing a few colors with bare eyes close to traditional Primary Colors and Secondary Colors amongst 14 pieces of data which particularly used traditional Five Colors and examining them using spectrophotometer(JX777), the following conclusions were drawn. Comparing only colors in Primary Colors, the result was red 7.11R 4.59/10.69, blue 6.71PB 3.18/6.45, yellow 3.91Y 7.56/6.12, respectively. With regard to Secondary Colors, it was reported that red 7.96RP 5.42/10.3, blue 7.8B 5.16/5.53, green 8.03GY 6.05/4.34, yellow 2.73Y 7.47/4.07, purple 2.39RP 4.69/4.56, respectively. (diagram) As a result, the standard of Five Colors can be used in modern fiber color. There are differences in dyeing material, methods and kinds of fiber of that time, but women of Chosun Dynasty combined and made fabric which was circulated. Consequently, an applicable attribute of the aye-color values was considered.

A Study on Tradition Discourse in Korean Modern Drama between 1894 and 1910 (근대계몽기 한국연극사의 전통담론 연구 II)

  • This paper examines the tradition discourses in Korean modern drama of the late 19th and the early 20th. It focuses particularly on how key intellectuals differentiated the definition and interpreted 'Theater-Improvement' while they insisted on improving traditional performance. Tradition discourse focused on how to improve its contents of performances. There were three categories in discussion. First, Confucian intelligent insisted that traditional performance should be discarded, because it led to customs disorder among the public. Second, patriotic and progressive intellectuals led by Sin Chae-Ho(신채호) and Bak Yen-Sik(박은식), preferred the reformed content of traditional Korean performance dealing with historical heroes. in order to stimulate patriotism in the Korean. Third, Lee In-Jik(이인직) who had worked at a popular newspaper company in Japan tried to make 'New Theater' criticizing decayed officials and the stupid nation. He did not concern about the colonialism of Japan. In the late 19th and the early 20th in Korean modern drama history, tradition discourses faced different directions, dependent on their political positions, familiar foreign cultures, and their view on traditional cultures.

  • Today's restaurant is the space not just for eating, but enjoying the mood, communication space for social life, and leading trend. Therefore interior design is concerned with one of the most important role for creating unique atmosphere of restaurants. This study is aimed to analyze how to interior design elements affect the improvement of New York hip restaurant reputation, focusing on the importance of the establishment of unique trend. Through the case studies of New York hip restaurants, it is suggested that interior design is composed to not only significant different element, but also common design concept. It is mainly divided by 5 categories which is the Fusion mixed with eastern culture throughout the vision of the western, the New Baroque redefined tradition and modern thought, the Modern Classic created by importance of concise style and beauty of material, the High Concept used with new materials and technologies, and the Naturalism focused on spirit from nature and eco. Recently New York hip restaurant through the corporation work with star chef and star designer is developed to provide the enjoyable and anticipated spaces with strong theme and entertainments.

Every Picture Tells a Story: The New York Unicorn Tapestries and Daesoon Jinrihoe's Simudo Paintings

  • Both the late 15th-century Unicorn Tapestries now at the Cloisters Museum in New York and Daesoon Jinrihoe's Simudo Paintings present a religious narrative through the symbol of the search for an animal that is then subdued. This is now the prevailing scholarly interpretation of the New York Unicorn Tapestries, with the unicorn representing Jesus Christ, although a concurrent reading alluding to human love cannot be excluded. The article examines the New York Unicorn Tapestries according to their Christological interpretation, rooted in traditions about the unicorn popularized by the German medieval mystic Hildegard of Bingen, although in fact much older. It then discusses the Buddhist iconographic tradition of ox-herding paintings that represents an antecedent for the Simudo Paintings and notes the latter's differences and similarities with the New York Unicorn Tapestries.
