  • Shape description is an important and fundamental issue in content-based image retrieval (CBIR), and a number of shape description methods have been reported in the literature. For shape description, both global information and local contour variations play important roles. In this paper a new included-angular ternary pattern (IATP) based shape descriptor is proposed for shape image retrieval. For each point on the shape contour, IATP is derived from its neighbor points, and IATP has good properties for shape description. IATP is intrinsically invariant to rotation, translation and scaling. To enhance the description capability, multiscale IATP histogram is presented to describe both local and global information of shape. Then multiscale IATP histogram is combined with included-angular histogram for efficient shape retrieval. In the matching stage, cosine distance is used to measure shape features' similarity. Image retrieval experiments are conducted on the standard MPEG-7 shape database and Swedish leaf database. And the shape image retrieval performance of the proposed method is compared with other shape descriptors using the standard evaluation method. The experimental results of shape retrieval indicate that the proposed method reaches higher precision at the same recall value compared with other description method.

  • Although tracking methods are efficient and popular for vessel segmentation, they require a seed to initiate an instance of tracking. In this paper, a new method to detect new seeds for tracking of arterial segments from CT angiography (CTA) and to construct a vascular structure is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based on shape analysis of connected components in a volume of interest around a vessel segment which was already extracted by tracking. The eigenvalues of the covariance matrix are used as the shape features for detection. The experimental results on actual clinical data showed that the results totally revealed the arterial tree not hindered by bone or veins. In visual comparison to a method which combines registration and subtraction of both pre-contrast and post-contrast CT volumes, the proposed method produced comparable results to the reference method and were confirmed of its feasibility for clinical use of reducing the cost and burden of patients.

  • In this study, the shape design optimization of a refrigerator door hinge stopper was performed to reduce the discrepancy in the opening forces of the left and right doors of a double-door refrigerator. A finite element model was constructed and analyzed by quasi-static analyses to evaluate the structural performance of the door hinge stopper. The reaction moment calculated at the hinge axis was used as a measure of the door opening and closing forces. The design objective is to increase the door opening force by 50% while maintaining the door closing force and the maximum stress calculated in the body of the hinge stopper at the current level. A new design concept with a contacting slot was proposed to decouple the door closing and opening forces. Shape optimization was performed to determine the dimensions of the new design of the hinge stopper, and the rib pattern was determined by topological optimization to further increase the door opening force. It was observed that the new design met all design requirements.

  • A new species, Burmoniscus phuketensis, is described from Ko Phuket, Thailand. The new species belongs to the group characterized by male pereopods 1 and 2 with enlarged and flattened carpi, including B. coecus (Budde-Lund, 1895), B. ferrarai (Schumalfuss, 1983), B. mossambicus (Ferrara and Taiti, 1985), B. rowei Taiti and Manicastri, 1988, and B. rakataensis Green, Ferrara and Taiti, 1990. Among them, this new species resembles B. coecus and B. rakataensis in the pigmentless body and the shape of pereonite 7 epimeron with acute postero-lateral corner, but is easily distinguished from both specie by the shape of telson. While the eyes are absent in B. coecus, they are present in this new species.

  • By using a concept of interrelation vector between line segments a new algorithm for partial shape recognition of two-dimensional objects is introduced. The interrelation vector which is invariant under translation rotation and scaling of a pair of line segments is used as a feature information for polygonal shape recognition. Several useful properties of the interrelation vector are also derived in relation to efficient partial shape recognition. The proposed algorithm requires only small space of storage and is shown to be computationally simple and efficient.

  • A new, simple method to determine the die shape using a streamline in extrusion is presented. This method assumes that a billet deforms naturally to minimize the energy input for the given process condition. Then, an optimal die shape can be determined along a streamline. Extrusion operations with two types of materials, strain-hardening material and strain-rate hardening material, are examined using this method. Predictions with the proposed method are compared with those by the previous optimizing model to show its efficiency.

  • In this paper, we propose a new shape similarity measure for M:N polygon pairs regardless of different object cardinalities in the pairs. The proposed method compares the projections of two shape functions onto Zernike polynomial basis functions, where the shape functions were obtained from each overall region of objects, thus not being affected by the cardinalities of object pairs. Moments with low-order basis functions describe global shape properties and those with high-order basis functions describe local shape properties. Therefore several moments up to a certain order where the original shapes were similarly reconstructed can efficiently describe the shape properties thus be used for shape comparison. The proposed method was applied for the building objects in the New address digital map and a car navigation map of Seoul area. Comparing to an overlapping ratio method, the proposed method's similarity is more robust to object cardinality.

  • Design of shape for visco-elastic vibration isolation elements, which are very cost-effective and so popular in many applications is frequently based on experiences, intuitions, or trial and errors. Such traditions in shape design make it difficult for drastic changes or new concepts to come out. In this paper, both topological method and shape optimization method are combined together to find out a most desirable isolator shape efficiently by using two commercial engineering programs. ABAQUS and MATLAB. The procedure is divided into two steps. At the first step, a topology optimization method is employed to find an initial shape. where density of either 0 or 1 for finite elements is used for physical realizability. At the second step, based on the initial shape, finer tuning of the shape is done by boundary movement method. An illustration of the procedure will be presented for a mount of an air-conditioner compressor system and the effectiveness will be discussed.

  • We propose an image-based three-dimensional shape determination system. The shape, and thus the three-dimensional coordinate information of the 3-D object, is determined solely from captured images of the 3-D object from a prescribed set of viewpoints. The approach is based on the shape-from-silhouette (SFS) technique, and the efficacy of the SFS method is tested using a sample data set. The extracted three-dimensional shape is modeled with polygons generated by a new iterative triangulation algorithm, and the polygon model can be exported to commercial software. The proposed system may be used to visualize the 3-D object efficiently, or to quickly generate initial CAD data for reverse engineering purposes, including three dimensional design applications such as 3-D animation and 3-D games.
