  • Eight samples, collected from six moss-covered soil and two freshwater samples, were examined to determine ciliate diversity in Korea. Based on the morphology of living and stained specimens, thirteen ciliate species, previously unrecorded in Korea, were identified. These specimens were classified to four classes, seven orders, ten families, and twelve genera. Of these genera, the following six were first records in Korea: Bresslauides, Dexiotricha, Glaucoma, Paragastrostyla, Sathrophilus, and Trithigmostoma. Here, we provide a brief description of the morphology of these 13 taxa along with microphotographs and notes.

  • Two species of the genus Parthenocodrus Pschorn-Walcher, 1958 (Hymenoptera: Proctotrupidae) are reported: P. elongatus from Japan and South Korea and P. puncticauda from South Korea. Parthenocodrus elongatus is easily distinguished by having posterior surface of propodeum without transverse carinae and ovipositor sheath with distinct longitudinal striations. Parthenocodrus puncticauda is easily distinguished by having posterior surface of propodeum with transverse carinae and ovipositor sheath without distinct longitudinal striations. This genus is also newly recorded in each country. Redescriptions and photographs of the diagnostic characters are provided. All specimens for this study are deposited in the Yeungnam University (YNU), Gyeongsan-si, South Korea.

  • Two species of mantid shrimps were collected from southern part of Korea and identified as Kempella mikado and Squilloides leptosquilla of the Squillidae. The former species is characterized by having a dactylus of the raptorial claw with six teeth, only the fifth thoracic somite with a single spinous lateral process, and the fifth abdominal somite with a pair of black dorsal patches. However, the latter species is characterized by having a dactylus of the raptorial claw with four teeth, and the fifth to seventh thoracic somites each with a single lateral process. Both species are described with figures and photographs. The present records are extensions of their geographical distributions and new records in Korea. Hence, a total of six species of the stomatopods have been recorded in Korea up to date: Oratosquilla oratoria, Faughnia formosae, Taku spinosocarinatus, Chorisquilla spinosissima, Kempella mikado, and Squilloides leptosquilla.

  • Two species of Cryptophlebia: C. nota Kawabe and C. ombrodelta (Lower), are reported from Korea for the first time. This is in fact the first record of Cryptophlebia from Korea, as the previous Korean records of the genus were based on one species, Cryptophlebia hematoma Diakonoff, currently assigned to Thaumatotibia Zacher. Photos of the superficial and genital features are provided for the two Korean species of Cryptophlebia and their distribution and host plants are summarized. Cryptophlebia ombrodelta is recognized as an adventive species in Korea and a potential pest on leguminoseous crops.

  • Several seismic traces of earthquakes observed from the digital new type seismograph instruments of KMA in 2000 were scanned. From these, good quality data which have high signal/noise ratio were selected and they were transformed into ascii data from binary data(min-seed format). The hypo71 program and P-S was applied in order to determine the location of epicenter, origin time and the magnitude. From these data, the 29 earthquakes, 358 seismic records consist of 587 directional components were calculated. Using these, ground acceleration data, acceleration, velocity, and displacemnet response spectrums of the structures were calculated and they could be represented in a picture by the form of tripartite response spectrum. In the result, response spectrums of the 587 directional components of the above seismic data records were obtained respectively.

  • Two species of crabs, Homola orientalis Henderson, 1888 and Pseudomicippe nipponica (Sakai, 1938), are described and illustrated for the first time in Korea. Homola orientalis was collected at 30 m depth by trap from Busan, and P. nipponica was collected on the intertidal region in Seongsanpo, Jejudo Island. Homola orientalis is the first species of its family in the region. The family Homoldae is characterized by a linea homolica on the carapace and they carry camouflage in the form of sponges or cnidarians with subchelate of the fourth ambulatory legs. The Korean brachyuran fauna now comprises 223 species including the new records from this study.

  • The author discusses the nature and scope of archival reference service through the debate to user studies in the 1980s and the 1990s. Until the 1990s, archivists paid little attention to studying their user population. A new approach to archival user service led to the development of various public services of archives and resulted in active interaction with the public. Based on the discussion, the article examines the implication of archival reference service in Korean society.

  • The treatment of cleft lip and palate patients requires multidisciplinary coorperation, and the involved clinicians rely on the completeness and accuracy of the patient's medical records in developing comprehensive treatment plans. There are so many classifications in cleft lip and palate but each classification has advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore there are few classification or assessment in secondary cleft lip and palate deformities. A modification of Kenahan's Y classification in primary cleft lip and palate and new classification in secondary cleft lip and palate deformities are proposed as a simple and reproducible method. These reproducible classification may be used to facilitate not only storing and analyzing of medical informations in computer but also the planning of secondary repairs

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest new methodologies for documenting locality in digital environment, reformulation the Cox's documentation model focused on cooperative acquisition of documentary heritage institutions. This study defines the concepts of locality, space and place, relation of collective memory to archives, and analyzes the four approaches of documentation comparatively. Based on these analyses, it suggests the categories of documenting locality, and the directions of archive portal design for collective memory of locality.

  • A taxonomic study of the genus Delta de Saussure, 1855 from Vietnam is presented. A total of four species are recorded: D. campaniforme campaniforme (Fabricius, 1775), D. conoideum (Gmelin, 1790), D. esuriens esuriens (Fabricius, 1787), and D. pyriforme pyriforme (Fabricius, 1775). Of these, D. campaniforme campaniforme was first recorded from Vietnam by de Saussure et al., 1904, under the name Eumenes esuriens and is now reconfirmed to occur in Vietnam after more than 100 years, and D. conoideum is newly recorded from Vietnam. A key to species based on morphological characters is given with illustrations, and distributional records in Vietnam are also provided.
