Early Childhood Teachers' Practice and Difficulties with Musical Concepts Treated in the 'Sing-a-New-Song' Activity ('새노래부르기' 활동에서 다루고 있는 유아교사의 음악적 개념과 지도의 어려움)

  • This study examined musical concepts of early childhood teachers with the 'Sing-a-New-Song' activity and problems teachers face in the application of musical concepts. Participants were 10 kindergarten teachers; data were collected through lesson plans, videos of classes, and interviews with teachers. Results showed that (1) selection of songs focused on words of a song rather than musical concepts; ignoring development of the musical level of the children. (2) Goal-setting ignored musical concepts. (3) Class management confused musical concepts with other concepts. (4) No evaluation of musical concepts was undertaken. Problems included teachers' lack of knowledge of musical development in young children, insufficient understanding and limited application of musical concepts, and low expectations regarding music as a subject of instruction.

  • Currently the terminology 'rock musical' is used too freely, and thus academic definition and research of its stylistic features are required. This thesis attempts to clarify the historical context of rock music and rock muscal, and to study the musical and dramatic feature of rock musical. This thesis also attempts to catagolize the musical types of the songs used in the contemporary rock musial ; 1) authentic rock music, 2) psudo-rock music transformed from other musical styles, and 3) amalgamation of rock music and other musical styles. All this attempts is aimed to find a possibility of creation of new musical.

  • Among the styles of performing arts, perhaps the genre that has attracted the largest audience would be musical. Popularity of musical has brought diverse changes in our performing arts market, and, upon emerging another musical genre, called 'Korean Traditional Musical Comedy,' it has been well-received by the audiences. 'Korean Traditional Musical Comedy' is a word that are formed by merging two other terms such as 'Korean Traditional Music' and 'Musical (Comedy).' In the meantime, however, it has yet some problems in order to be defined as the genre that has concrete concepts. It is because the term such as Korean Traditional Musical Comedy was created being closely associated with a marketing purpose rather than a term that defines the characteristics of a genre of performing arts. Although this new musical genre has drawn attentions of many audiences by adding 'Musical Comedy' to 'Korean Traditional Music' that was not quite popular to the public, it still does not have any established forms so that there is a fine line between "Korean Traditional Musical Comedy" and another genre like traditional style folk opera ("Changgeuk"). Looking at the characteristics of the musical work called 'Korean Traditional Musical Comedy, in general, first of all, it is a performance where music and drama are played. Here, the distinctive characteristic of this musical is that 'Korean Traditional Music' is sung. And the kinds of Korean traditional musics being sung are mainly Pansori (dramatic story-singing) and folk-songs, and, in most cases, Korean traditional musical instruments are being used as accompanying music. In this paper, the researcher investigated the aspects of experiment centering around Korean Musical Group, Taroo. These days, various experiments has been repeated not only for the works of Taroo but other musical work presently called 'Korean Traditional Musical Comedy' also. Having encompassed overall performance factors including use of musical instruments, dance, acting, materials for drama as well as music in drama, the researcher has gone through experiments repeatedly. Meanwhile, however, the subject matters that make 'Korean Traditional Musical Comedy' mostly attractive to the audiences are music and songs or sounds. ["Sori" also called "Chang" (唱)] Particularly, under the current situation of our musicals, the role of "Sori" is extremely important. The factor that plays absolutely most important role in acceptance and transformation of "Sori" is the created Pansori. Since the created Pansori is composed with new rhythmic patterns and new narrative poems, it tells the present story. Also it draws good responses from the audiences owing to easy conveyance of dialogues. And, its new style brings diversification to organization of musical instruments, so then this leads to the arrangements of music for Korean traditional music instruments, as well as instrumental music ensemble, orchestra, and jazz band, etc. Likewise, upon appearing creative musics in 'Korean Traditional Musical Comedy,' professional music and vocal compositions have begun to emerge naturally. And, the song specialist and writer, of course, staffs including direction, lighting, and sounds, etc are required. That is, professional composition method are forced to be introduced to all areas. Other than this, there are many music pieces which are based on our unique songs and sounds ("Sori") and such traditional factors as use of lead singer for ceremony or chorus, and the method that puts weight on Pansori. Accordingly many things accomplished. However, it is required that 'Korean Traditional Musical Comedy' go through numerous discussions and more experiments. Above all, the most important things are the role of actor and actress, and their changes, and training of actor and actress further. Good news is there are good audience responses. 'Korean Traditional Musical Comedy' is an open genre. As musicals are divided into several domains according to the characteristics thereof, 'Korean Traditional Musical Comedy' will be able to show its distinctive features in various styles according to embodiment.

Musical Genre Classification Based on Deep Residual Auto-Encoder and Support Vector Machine

  • Music brings pleasure and relaxation to people. Therefore, it is necessary to classify musical genres based on scenes. Identifying favorite musical genres from massive music data is a time-consuming and laborious task. Recent studies have suggested that machine learning algorithms are effective in distinguishing between various musical genres. However, meeting the actual requirements in terms of accuracy or timeliness is challenging. In this study, a hybrid machine learning model that combines a deep residual auto-encoder (DRAE) and support vector machine (SVM) for musical genre recognition was proposed. Eight manually extracted features from the Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) were employed in the preprocessing stage as the hybrid music data source. During the training stage, DRAE was employed to extract feature maps, which were then used as input for the SVM classifier. The experimental results indicated that this method achieved a 91.54% F1-score and 91.58% top-1 accuracy, outperforming existing approaches. This novel approach leverages deep architecture and conventional machine learning algorithms and provides a new horizon for musical genre classification tasks.

  • The objective of this paper is to verify the usefulness and validity of ICT-based elementary education for musical composition using multimedia technology. Cearing with the characteristic of musical education, multimedia technology, which has made dazzling progress thanks to the rapid development of computer for the last several year, is expected to be a new alternative to overcome various problems of musical education and enhance students` musical function and knowledge. In particular, if ICT-based musical education is introduced in teaching musical composition, in which many elementary school techers feel difficulties, significant education effects will be produced. ICT-based musical education method in the paper identified imitation and problems in traditional theory-based learning and musical composition class using musical instruments and, as a part of resolving the limitations and problems, instructed elementary students in how to use a computer program and applied the program to musical composition class. As a result, the method maximized learning effect and improved stusents` ability to create melodies in a short term compared to traditional teaching methods.

  • This paper presents a new methodology for music structure analysis which facilitates rhetoric-based music summarization. Similarity analysis of musical constituents suggests the structure of a musical piece. We can recognize its musical form from the structure. Musical forms have rhetorical characteristics of their on. We have utilized the characteristics for locating musical motifs. Motif extraction is to music summarization what topic sentence extraction is to text summarization. We have evaluated the effectiveness of this methodology through a popular music case study.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out how children's musical is done in the early childhood education field. To find out the realities of children's musical watching, seek problems and way to improve, educationally new alternative, we selected subjects of study as follows. First, how children's musical of the early childhood education center is done? Second, how the education related children's musical of the early childhood education center is done? Third, what is the problem and way to improve of watching children's musical? To find out these, the result of the teachers(159 people) who are working the kidergarten and the early childhood education center is as follows. First, Children were very interested in watching musical and could get new, various experience and culture. Second, when watching musical, kindergarten and the early education center did pre-exploration everytime except same place. second, Of post-education activity, drawing activity related with musical content, story-making activity, developing to child's act are educationally effective. Third, whey watching musical, there is much pressure about danger and safety. So it is hard to control when children is moving. This significant result shows the importance of educational effects of the musical watching and the proposed expansion of the opportunity to experience a musical watching of the various educational approaches.

Global Utopia and Local Anxiety on the Stage of the Korean Musical

  • The purpose of this essay is three-fold: to trace the genealogy of the Korean musical, which ever since its inception in the 1960s has been seeking to modernize Korean theater with Broadway as a constant role model; to investigate how the national and the global conflict and are conflated in the form of the Korean musical in the process of its (dis)identification with Broadway; and to examine how its intercultural translations reveal and reflect the dilemma and ambivalence posed by globalization in our era. Drawing on Richard Dyer's signature article Entertainment and Utopia, I analyze how the Korean musical manifests and conduits competing utopian impulses of Korean/Global audiences. I also attempt to problematize the formulaic notion of Broadway musicalsthe Superior Other!which implies a global hegemony that does not, in fact, exist because the boundary between the global and the local as well as the power dynamics of global culture are not fixed but constantly moving and changing. Today's musical scene in Korea shows interesting reversals from the 1990s, when Korean producers were eager to debut on Broadway and impress American audiences. Korean producers no longer look up to Broadway as a final destination; instead they want to make Seoul a new Broadway. They import Broadway musicals and turn them into Korean shows. The glamor of Broadway is no longer the main attraction of musicals in Korea. What young audiences look for most is the glamor of K-pop idols and utopian feelings of abundance, energy, intensity, transparency and community, which they can experience live in the musical with their favorite stars right in front of their eyes. In conclusion, I delve into the complex dynamics of recent Korean musicals with Thomas Friedman's theory of Globalization 3.0 as reference. The binary formula of Global/America versus Local/Korea cannot be applied to the dynamic and intercultural musical scene of today. Globalization is not a uniform phenomenon but rather a twofold (multifold) process of global domination and dissemination, in which the global and the local conflict and are conflated constantly. As this study tries to illuminate, the Korean musical has evolved in a huge net of interdependences between the global and the local with a range of sources, powers and influences.

A Study on Stage Costumes of Creative Musical 'Hyecho' - Focus on the Costumes of the Chorus - (창작 뮤지컬 '혜초'의 무대의상 연구 -코러스(Chorus)의상을 중심으로-)

  • This study examines the stage costumes of the creative musical 'Hyecho', which was performed six times in the Chung Ang Art Center hosted by Chung-Ang University's performance & media agency from December 20 to 22 in 2006. The stage costumes were made based on these basic design elements of stage costumes that were dyed : line, silhouette, material, and color. First, the creative musical 'Hyecho' presents a new form of fusion theatre, which blends Korean traditional music and dance with videos. Thereby, the musical has opened a new phase in Korea's creative performing arts. Second, in musical performances that combines dance and songs, stage costumes should be made not only to attract the audience's eyes, but also not to interrupt actors' vocalizations and movements by taking their physical features into account. Also, costumes should be made in consideration of their relationships with visual elements, including stage settings and lighting. Third, the musical features fusion-style stage costumes, which combines Hanbok, the Korean traditional costume, and Indian traditional costumes with modern costumes. For the line and silhouette, costumes show the beauty of curves through the curves of Hanbok and India's traditional costumes and also through irregular pleats of pants. Also, by using cotton materials, which is easy to dye and not readily deformed, costumes feature colors that are found in nature through a gradation dyeing technique. In doing so, it offers visual amusement to the audience by making stage costumes look like a beautiful painting. Fourth, the stage costumes of the chorus feature costumes that use lining and pleated skirts using belts, and various accessories, including necklaces that use strings in order to express evil spirits. Since there is not much time to change costumes during a performance, using such items are helpful to show the unique characteristics of actors effectively during the limited time. Also, coordinating with the lighting director allows the costume designer to make better costumes for the chorus and make the performance more dramatic. Finally, it was not necessary to wash the costumes of the chorus of the fusion musical Hyecho 2006 since it was performed only six times. However, when using dyed costumes for the long-term performance, it might cause problems such as bleaching that result from the washing of costumes and low durability that can result in the deformation of costumes. As performing arts are made in various forms and are diversified, it is needed for stage costumes to change accordingly through new attempts and various ways of expression.

A Study on the Musical Iconography Consideration of Yanggeum (양금의 음악도상학적 고찰)

  • An Instruments are not only for musical usage, but also for historical, social and cultural contexts. The yanggeum instrument began to be played in Persia before the 10th century and is played in various parts of the world in the 21st century. It has been handed over for many years and played creatively beyond the boundaries of the region. In this paper, we will learn about the meaning of Korean traditional yanggeum, which preserves its original shape without any change in form or technique, through a method of musical iconography. As a method of musical Iconography for the musical instruments, we examined the data on the drawings and compared it with the literature, focusing on the origin, form and performance of the instruments. I hope that this study will not only provide a new perspective on instrument research, but also help understand the historical, social and cultural implications of the instrument. It is hoped that research on musical instruments will be done in many different ways and that the realm of musical science will be approached widely.
