  • The education of teachers in mathematics consists of two parts: enhancing the math-skills of the students and education in didactics. Mainly the math is taught in lessons for 50 to 100 students or even more. This has wrong influence to the teaching style and the attitude towards mathematics. This paper reports about a project, where active schoolteachers are involved in teaching the mathematics content. This is done in workshops, where the teaching can be a model for teaching a class. In addition there is the chance to inspire the students for mathematics.

  • This paper describes the gain characteristics of Multi-output LLC series resonant converter by using the new analytical method. Specially, using the Math-CAD simulated result, this paper analyzes an influence from the secondary leakage inductance of transformer. The theoretical results are verified through an experimental prototype of the 430W 3-output LLC resonant converter for 46inch PDP power module.

  • In 2001, Choi, Harsh & Rathie [Some summation formulas for the Appell's function $F_1$. East Asian Math. J. 17 (2001), 233-237] have obtained 11 results for the Appell's function $F_1$ with the help of Gauss's summation theorem and generalized Kummer's summation theorem. We aim at presenting 22 more results for $F_1$ with the help of the generalized Gauss's second summation theorem and generalized Bailey's theorem obtained by Lavoie, Grondin & Rathie [Generalizations of Whipple's theorem on the sum of a $_3F_2$. J. Comput. Appl. Math. 72 (1996), 293-300]. Two interesting (presumably) new special cases of our results for $F_1$ are also explicitly pointed out.

  • In this paper, descriptive assessment method for middle school mathematics was evaluated by developing a framework for designing and grading problems for descriptive assessment and analyzing the effectiveness of the problems. The new descriptive assessment problems were developed by reviewing the current 7th National Mathematics Curriculum of Korea and aligned mathematics textbooks to define a set of problem design principles and evaluation framework for the assessment strategy. The developed problems were first pilot tested and then revised based on the feedback from the test. The final version was field tested by 100 students in 7th grade middle school. After the field test, the problems were graded by two middle school math teachers and one math education researcher to determine the overall correlation between graders and also to analyze effectiveness of the evaluation framework of the test. This result of this study is expected to assist in the further development of descriptive problems and grading framework by providing a reference work for teachers to better understand the process and the limitations of executing the new assessment strategy.

  • Some new nonlinear retarded integral inequalities of Gronwall-like type are established, which mainly generalized some results given by Cho, Dragomir and Kim (J. Korean Math. Soc. 43 (2006), No.3, pp. 563-578) and can be used in the analysis of various problems in the theory of certain classes of differential equations and integral equations. Applications examples are also indicated.

  • The main concern of this paper is to develop a new class of quasi-newton methods. These methods are intended for use whenever memory space is a major concern and, hence, they are usually referred to as limited memory methods. The methods developed in this work are sensitive to the choice of the memory parameter ${\eta}$ that defines the amount of past information stored within the Hessian (or its inverse) approximation, at each iteration. The results of the numerical experiments made, compared to different choices of these parameters, indicate that these methods improve the performance of limited memory quasi-Newton methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate various mathematics education improvement or reform movements of Western Europe countries (United Kingdom, Germany, etc.) and the United States of America, to see the effects of those movements on Korean mathematics education circle, and to find a direction of Korean mathematics curriculum design. The third Korean mathematics curriculum was most affected by the new mathematics movement of the United States of America. This movement was emphasizing abstract structure, logical rigorousness and discovery learning of mathematics, which was fired from late fifties. Korean mathematics education circle imported the new mathematics early seventies from USA, but serious problems had been found at that time in USA. This study has pointed out that new math oriented Korean mathematics curriculum was not proper and the new mathematics itself was disastrous for most Korean students' learning. The study also points out that they hurried too much introducing the new mathematics and publishing new mathematics oriented textbooks but they had not sufficient teacher training programs. In our future mathematics curriculum reform, we have to remember such a historical lesson.

  • Recently, many advanced countries have used original ICT tools in their educational courses. But Korea didn't have any effective origin ICT tools in our mathematical education, compared with other countries which have developed various tools, for examples, Web-Mathematica and HP Calculator. Although we have the advanced IT environment, the educational environments in mathematics using ICT seems to be not promising. In this paper, we suggest a new mathematics education tools in ICT and the internet environments in Korea, and a teaching and studyingmodel for the teachers, students and classrooms. It is based on the Sage-Math and RPG. Sage-Math which is the software based on the web and RPG(Random Problem Generator) will give a good answer for the future of Korean mathematics ICT education.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a new program for elementary math-gifted students by using 'Girih Tililng' and apply it to the elementary students to improve their math-ability. Girih Tililng is well known for 'the secrets of mathematics hidden in Mosque decoration' with lots of recent attention from the world. The process of this study is as follows; (1) Reference research has been done for various tiling theories and the theories have been utilized for making this study applicable. (2) The characteristic features of Mosque tiles and their basic structures have been analyzed. After logical examination of the patterns, their mathematic attributes have been found out. (3) After development of Girih tiling program, the program has been applied to math-gifted students and the program has been modified and complemented. This program which has been developed for math-gifted students is called 'Exploring the Secrets of Girih Hidden in Mosque Patterns'. The program was based on the Renzulli's three-part in-depth learning. The first part of the in-depth learning activity, as a research stage, is designed to examine Islamic patterns in various ways and get the gifted students to understand and have them motivated to learn the concept of the tiling, understanding the characteristics of Islamic patterns, investigating Islamic design, and experiencing the Girih tiles. The second part of the in-depth learning activity, as a discovery stage, is focused on investigating the mathematical features of the Girih tile, comparing Girih tiled patterns with non-Girih tiled ones, investigating the mathematical characteristics of the five Girih tiles, and filling out the blank of Islamic patterns. The third part of the in-depth learning activity, as an inquiry or a creative stage, is planned to show the students' mathematical creativity by thinking over different types of Girih tiling, making the students' own tile patterns, presenting artifacts and reflecting over production process. This program was applied to 6 students who were enrolled in an unified(math and science) gifted class of D elementary school in Daejeon. After analyzing the results produced by its application, the program was modified and complemented repeatedly. It is expected that this program and its materials used in this study will guide a direction of how to develop methodical materials for math-gifted education in elementary schools. This program is originally developed for gifted education in elementary schools, but for further study, it is hoped that this study and the program will be also utilized in the field of math-gifted or unified gifted education in secondary schools in connection with 'Penrose Tiling' or material of 'quasi-crystal'.

  • This study is the field of mathematics education on the assumption that they can extend outside the classroom. Recent mathematics education is increasing the importance of field experience and various activities based on real-life math education. Thus, it is necessary to consider this situation in pre-service teacher's education. The purpose of this study is to apply the 'Mathematics Field Trips Activities' in the pre-mathematics teacher education. So the specific case of 'Mathematics Field Trips Activities' was analyzed. Mathematics teachers conducted preliminary exploration activities on the historical cultural property which were effective in the following four aspects. First, cognitive effects and second, definitive effect. Third, cultural-mathematical effect. Fourth, the effect on improving math class. Finally they were summarized and divided into classes target content knowledge and teaching knowledge both sides. As a result, the 'Mathematics Field Trips Activities' were found to have significant effects on pre-service math teacher. Finally, ongoing research is needed to settle into a new teaching and learning methods.
