  • This case report presents a 34-year-old female patient. Her chief complaints are akinetic mutism and cognitive dysfunctions. We have diagnosed her with leukoencephalopathy. She was treated with Korean traditional herbal medicines (Joojackwhan) for 33 days continuously. The effects of treatment were measured by the Korean Mini - Mental State Examination and Modified Bathel Index. After treatment, her chief complaints have been improved. Furthermore, the K-MMSE, MBI scores increased. From this case, we deduced that the Korean traditional herbal medicines (Joojackwhan) could be effective for cognitive dysfunctions and akinetic mutism caused by leukoencephalopathy.

On the patients' blood, the levels of LFT and RFT were examined and the residual levels of heavy metals and pesticides were measured. Results: There were 610 patients who had taken GyoGam-Dan for about three years. In the patients, the most common diseases is depression, followed by palpitation, and then insomnia. Among the patients' estimations on its effectiveness, there were many of positive ones. The blood analyses of patients who had taken GyoGam-Dan did not show any problems and moreover there was not any problems in the levels of residual heavy metals and agricultural pesticides. Taken together, GyoGam-Dan was proved to be a safe medicine for health. Conclusions: Our clinical and chemical studies show that GyoGam-dan has the anti-stress effect and is a safe medicine of which side effect does not exist. Hereafter, Nigorous clinical trial on GyoGam-dan is required.

  • Objectives: Alzheimer's Dementia is somewhat common in clinical stages, and there are many reports and papers regarding this subject. We explain the present state of Alzheimer's Dementia in JON (The Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry) for the benefits of clinical practice. Methods: We searched for articles in JON from 1990 to 2014 and selected ones that were related to Alzheimer's Dementia; then, we analyzed the data and placed it in four categories, like experimental study, case study, Clinical Data-Analysis study, and clinical trial. Results: 1) We found 47 articles relating to Alzheimer's Dementia in JON from 1997 to 2014: 41 experimental studies, 1 case study, 1 Clinical Data-Analysis study, and 4 Clinical trials. 2) There were Chung-kyung Acupuncture Method, Auricular acupuncture, and Cha-rak Acupuncture Method to treat Alzheimer's Dementia. 3) There were many additional treatments, like aroma therapy. 4) In the experimental study, they reported on several herbs, including herbal prescriptions that affected the suppression of related mRNAs and genes. 5) There were 4 clinical trials regarding herbal prescription that was effective for treating Alzheimer's Dementia. Conclusions: In JON, regarding Alzheimer's Dementia, the majority dealt with experimental studies. Therefore, we also have to expand our sight into other fields of study. We need more clinical trials and case studies for the treatment of Alzheimer's Dementia in Oriental Neuropsychiatry.

  • Objectives : We attempt to find out the present situation of a study regarding psychotherapy in Korean medicine through research journals in the JON (The Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry). Methods : We searched and read every JON from 1990 to 2012 and selected articles relating to Psychotherapy. We then analyzed the data and divided them into 3 categories: literature study, case studies and clinical trials. Results : 1) We found 16 literature articles, in which 6 compared Korean psychotherapy with that of the Western, 4 reinterpreted it focusing on traditional cases in Korean psychotherapy, 3 articles were on Qigong, 1 article was on Buddhism and another on Tao, and 1 article was with regards to dreams. 2) There were a total of 26 case reports about Korean psychotherapy. Among them, JiUnGoRoen had the most at 12; somatoform disorder was the most target disease in 9. 3) There were a total of 13 clinical trials on Korean psychotherapy. There were 4 trials on meditation, 6 on Qigong, each 1 of each for EFT, suggestion and autogenic relaxation. Conclusions : In spite of many resources in Korean psychotherapy, it was limited because it was not able to systematize clinically. Hence, we need to hand down and systematize Korean psychotherapy further.

  • Objectives : Ginseng Radix Rubra water extract(RGE) has been used in vivo test for its beneficial effects on neuronal survival and neuroprotective functions, particularly in connection with APP-related dementias and Alzheimer's disease (AD). APP derived from proteolytic processing of the ${\beta}$-amyloid precursor protein (APP), including the amyloid-${\beta}$ peptide (A${\beta}$), plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's dementia. Methods : We determined that RGE inhibits formation of APP, which are the behavior, and possibly causative, feature of AD. Results and Conclusions : In the cells, RGE significantly activated antiapoptosis and decreased the activity of APP-grim, a key enzyme in the apoptosis cell-signaling cascade. These results suggest that neuronal damage in AD might be due to two factors: a direct APP toxicity and multiple cellular and molecular neuroprotective mechanisms, including attenuation of apoptosis and direct inhibition of APP, underlie the neuroprotective effects of RGE.

There were Sa-Am Acupuncture Method, Pharmacopuncture, electroacupuncture, and Auricular acupuncture to treat Sleep Disorder. 3. There were many additional treatments like Purgative Therapy, etc. 4. They reported the ordinary sleep pattern of Soeumin and Soyangin, too. 5. In the experimental study, they reported several herbs, herbal prescription on the expression of melatonin receptors, and Punsimgeimgamibang on insomnia, anxiety, emotionality in rats. 6. There were 2 clinical trials, one for Hwabyung-patient with insomnia by acupuncture treatment and another for insomnia in the elderly by ETF-I program. 7. There were 2 case of other sleep disorder (enuresis, sleepwalking) and 2 literature study of dream. Conclusions : In JON regarding sleep disorder, the majority was due to insomnia. Therefore, we also have to expand our sight into other sleep diseases. We need more clinical trials and experimental researches for the construction of EBM Sleep Disorder in Oriental Neuropsychiatry.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to describe the clinical aspects in dementia outpatients who visited oriental neuropsychiatry clinic and to analyze the efficacy of herbal medicine. Methods: We analysed medical records of dementia outpatients who visited oriental neuropsychiatry clinic of K medical center from August. 2000 to July, 2010 and matched our criteria. Results: Ninety-two subjects were selected for analysis and consisted of 77.3% dementia of Alzheimer type. 13.0% vascular dementia. and 9.8% mixed type of dementia. Herbal medicine prescribed mainly were Jowjseungchung-tang(Tiaowejshengqing-tang). Kunneo-tang(Jjannao-tang) and Chenwangbosim-dan(Tianwangbuxin-dan) for dementia of Alzheimer type, and Sunghyangjungki-san(Xjngxjangzhengqi-san) and Upung-dan (Yufeng-dan) for vascular dementia. Scores of K-DRS were not changed for some subs cales and decreased but less than natural decline of Alzheimer disease. Score on the Memory subscale in group of Kunneo-tang(Jjannao-tang) increased significantly. Conclusions : These results suggest that the herbal medicine may be effective for dementia. More prospective studies are needed to assess the efficacy and prognosis of herbal medicine for dementia. Clinical guideline is needed for systematic data accumulation.

We measured patient's pain by VAS(Visual Analogue Scale) and eye movement with a ruler every five days. Results & Conclusions : Any patient who has a headache with paresis of the extraocular muscle should be considered for ophthalmoplegic migraine. To diagnose ophthalmoplegic migraine, family history, past medical history, associated symptoms and signs, neurologic examinations and neuroimaging tests are needed. The symptoms of patient improved gradually within 26days from the first day of admission, and we can see her complete recovery.
