Traditional Chinese medicine classifies peripheral nerve impairment as paralysis and arthromyodynia, and considers that it is the result of defects of meridians and vessels, QI and blood, bones and muscles. Huangqi (Astragalus) Guizhi (Cassia Twig) Wuwu Tang, as a Qi invigorating formula, is usually used to improve peripheral nerve impairment. In recent years, some scholars have conducted research into Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) treatment with Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Tang and certain values of this treatment approach have been identified. CIPN is a type of blood-arthralgia Zheng in traditional Chinese medicine theory. In this review, we will discuss the treatment of CIPN with Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Tang according to blood-arthtalgia Zheng.

Two different unusual cases of acute sciatic neuropathy are described. They appeared to have been caused by complications from a procedure performed on a patient in the lithotomy position, and an uncertain etiology associated with either a previous femur fracture or a recent blunt trauma to the buttock. Comprehensive histories of weakness, with radiographic or electrophysiological studies, or even exploratory surgery are important in order to understand the etiologies of the sciatic neuropathies.

Isolated posterior antebrachial cutaneous (PABC) neuropathy is rare. A 62 year-old man presented with hypesthesia over the skin region of PABC nerve territory after an injection at the proximal to the lateral epicondyle. Antidromic sensory nerve conduction studies of PABC nerve was not evoked on the affected side. Our case showed that sensory nerve conduction of PABC nerve can be performed without much difficulty and that this test is useful in confirming PABC neuropathy.

We report a 29-year old female who developed bilateral femoral neuropathy combined with multiple abscesses in both thigh muscles. She was present with weakness in both lower extremities for 15 days and intermittent chilling sense for 3 months. Nerve conduction study showed complete absence of compound muscle action potentials in bilateral femoral nerves when stimulated at inguinal area. Electromyographic examination revealed no motor unit action potentials in both rectus femoris and vastus medialis muscles. CT revealed multifocal abscesses in bilateral thigh muscles. After antibiotic treatment, the patient's neurologic symptoms were improved.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the korean medical treatment for compressive neuropathy of radial nerve, especially chuna treatment of cervical vertebrae. Methods : Two patients were treated with acupuncture and moxibustion, herbal medication, chuna treatment on cervical vertebrae. To evaluate the wrist drop and numbness of hand, Coding Result of arbitrary values and manual muscle test(MMT), visual analogue scale(VAS) were used. Results : After 2 weeks-treatment(in case 1) & 5 weeks-treatment(in case 2), the movement and power of wrist were restored to nearly normal range, also the numbness of hands was removed. All cases show the improvement in the movement of wrist and the numbness of hands. Conclusions : Korean medical treatment including cervical manual therapy as chuna treatment is remarkably effective for radial nerve palsy. But further studies are required to concretely prove the effectiveness of chuna treatment on central vertebrae for peripheral neuropathy.

Small-fiber neuropathy (SFN) is a common clinical problems. The disorder is a generalized peripheral polyneuropathy that selectively involves small-diameter myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers. It is often idiopathic and typically presents with painful feet in patients over the age of 60. And autoimmune mechanisms are often suspected, but rarely identified. The clinical features consisted of painful dysesthesias and postganglionic sympathetic dysfunction, as well as reduced pinprick and temperature sensation. Although affected patients complain of neuropathic pain, this condition is often difficult to diagnose because of the few objective physical signs and normal nerve conduction studies. Diagnosis of SFN is made on the basis of the clinical features, normal nerve conduction studies, and abnormal specialized tests of small fiber function. These specialized studies include assessment of epidermal nerve fiber density as well as sudomotor, quantitative sensory, and cardiovagal testing. Unless an underlying disease is identified, treatment is usually directed toward alleviation of neuropathic pain.

Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) may seem easy to diagnose when the characteristic clinical manifestations are present, and electrodiagnostic studies have high sensitivity, although they are non-localizing in some cases and unable to reveal structural lesions. Ultrasonography is noninvasive and able to find the exact location of the lesion and visualize perineural structures. We present two cases of UNE in which we found hypoechoic mass lesions near medial epicondyle with ultrasonography and discuss its usefulness in diagnosis of UNE.

The symptomatology of suprascapular neuropathy is variable, depending principally on the etiology and location of the lesion. Among them, suprascapular nerve entrapment with isolated paralysis of the infraspinatus muscle is uncommon. We report a 27-year-old man presenting with right arm weakness. Based on the electrophysiologic and imaging findings, suprascapular neuropathy at the spinoglenoid notch due to cystic mass lesion was diagnosed.

Skin biopsy with investigation of small nerve fiber in human epidermis and dermis has been proven to be a useful method for demonstration of small fiber neuropathy. Quantification of intraepidermal nerve fiber density using anti-Protein Gene Product 9.5 (PGP 9.5) antibody is standardized method to diagnose the small fiber neuropathy. Skin biopsy method also makes it possible to differentiate the type of nerve fibers by using different antibodies. Quantification of dermal structures with different type of nerve fibers could be used to invest pathophysiologic mechanism of diseased state.

From among the group of patients diagnosed clinically to have Guillain-Barre syndrome(GBS), subgroups with pure motor involvement have been identified. Some of such patients appear to have an axonal neuropathy by eletrophysiology. Such cases have been termed acute motor axonal neuropathy(AMAN). Many of these patients are found clinically to have normal sensation and to have electrodiagnostic patterns consistent with selective degeneration of motor axons. A serological survey showed some of individuals with AMAN had evidence of antecedent Campylobacter jejuni(CJ) infection. And AMAN has an association with the presence of anti-ganglioside antibodies. This article reviewed briefly the AMAN and their relationship to CJ infection and anti-ganglioside antibodies.
