  • Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm. It mainly involves the abdominal or pelvic peritoneum of male adolescents. We report here the imprint cytologic features of a case of DSRCT occurring in the intraabdominal cavity of a 21-year-old man. A microscopic examination showed moderate cellularity. The tumor cells were singly arranged and arranged in clusters. The cells had round to oval nuclei with finely granular chromatin, inconspicuous nucleoli and scanty cytoplasm. Some tumor cells showed nuclear molding, and some cells had an epitheloid appearance with a large amount of lightly eosinophilic cytoplasm. A rosette-like pattern was present. Spindle-shaped, fibroblastic stromal cells were occasionally found. The tumor cells were immunoreactive for the markers cytokeratin (AE1/AE3), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), desmin, vimentin and neuron specific enolase (NSE).

  • In order to understand the phenomenon in a living cell correctly, it has been required to obtain intact responses from the cell membrane without disrupting the cytoplasmic circumstances. Gramicidin perforated patch configuration allows the electrical access to the whole cell with a minimal dialysis of cytoplasm and preventing the loss of native intracellular constituents, such as $Cl^-.$ Here, we would like to show the background of this method and the actual application of the gramicidin perforated patch recording mode on the dissociated neurons.

  • Familial form of Alzheimer's disease (FAD) is caused by mutations in presenilin-1 (PS-1) and presenilin-2 (PS-2). PS1 and PS2 mutation are known to similar effects on the production of amyloid ${\beta}$ peptide (A${\beta}$) and cause of neuronal cell death in the brain of patient of AD. The importance of the alternation of cellular calcium homeostasis in the neuronal cell death by PS1 mutation in a variety of experimental systems has been demonstrated.(omitted)

  • Niemann-Pick type C disease (NP-C) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by a deficiency of NPC1 gene function, which leads to severe neuroinflammation such as astrogliosis. While reports demonstrating neuroinflammation are prevalent in NP-C, information about the onset and progression of cerebellar astrogliosis in this disorder is lacking. Using gene targeting, we generated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) conditional null mutant mice. Deletion of VEGF in cerebellar Purkinje neurons (PNs) led to a significant increase of astrogliosis in the brain of NP-C mice in addition to the loss of PNs, suggesting PN-derived VEGF as an important factor in NP-C pathology. Moreover, replenishment of VEGF in neurons improved brain pathology in NP-C mice. Overall, our data provide a new pathological perspective on cerebellar astrogliosis in NP-C and suggest the importance of VEGF as a therapeutic target for this disease.

  • As medicinal knowledge developed. population system has been migrating into the aged society. These aged society evokes the social problem of senile diseases. One of these. Alzheimer's Disease (AD) has been an issue. and its causative. ${\beta}$-amyloid(A${\beta}$) has also been a key target in drug development. In AD, microglial cell affects neuron cells in any way of positive and negative. (omitted)

  • Microglial cell is a monocyte involved in the brain, which acts for a primary immune reaction and phagocytosis. Microglia has also been considered to have a great role in AD pathogenesis due to its intact inflammatory and phagocytic responses against foreign invaders. In the study, we tried to investigate the modulation of activation of microglia using Rg1, a class of ginsenoside from red ginseng. which are known to protect neuron cells. (omitted)

  • By using Neural Networks, a 8$\times$8 Banyan network controller is designed and implemented. In order to solve internal blocking and output blocking, Winner-Take-All method is used. The longer queue takes higher priority. First-in-first-out method is used among the non-blocking cells in the queue selected. The required time to select a cell is 2.7 $\mu$sec for 155Mbps. The implemented controller using Xilinx FPGA chip selects cells within 2.5$\mu$sec.

  • It is well known that oxygen radicals induce neuronal cell damage by initiation of lipid peroxidation chain reaction. Recent work has been also demonstrated that enzymatically generated free radicals cause the release of glutamate and aspartate from cultured rat hippocampal slices.(omitted)
