  • Mobile robots can offer services like intelligent monitoring in an indoor environment using network connection with remote users. In this paper, we designed and developed a networked security robot system with various sensors, such as flame detector, gas detector, sound monitoring module, and temperature sensor, etc. The robot can be accessed through a web service and the user can check the status of the environment. Using ADAMS software, we defined the motor specification for a worst-case condition of climbing over a obstacle. We applied the robot system in monitoring office condition.

  • This study suggests a new approach for identifying core robot tech-nologies based on technological cross-impact. Specifically, the approach applies data mining techniques and multi-criteria decision-making methods to the co-classification information of registered patents on the robots. First, a cross-impact matrix is constructed with the confidence values by applying association rule mining (ARM) to the co-classification information of patents. Analytic network process (ANP) is applied to the co-classification frequency matrix for deriving weights of each robot technology. Then, a technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is employed to the derived cross-impact matrix and weights for identifying core robot technologies from the overall cross-impact perspective. It is expected that the proposed approach could help robot technology managers to formulate strategy and policy for technology planning of robot area.

  • In this paper, control software architecture is designed to enable a heterogeneous multiple humanoid robot demonstration executing tasks cooperating with each other. In the heterogeneous humanoid robot team, one large humanoid robot and two small humanoid robots are included. For the efficient and reliable information sharing between many software components for humanoid control, sensing and planning, CORBA based software framework is applied. The humanoid tasks are given in terms of finite state diagram based human-robot interface, which is interpreted into the XML based languages defining the details of the humanoid mission. A state transition is triggered based on the event which is described in terms of conditions on the sensor measurements such as robot locations and the external vision system. In the demonstration of the heterogeneous humanoid team, the task of multiple humanoid cleaning the table is given to the humanoid robots and successfully executed based on the given state diagram.

  • This paper proposes an algerian for determining robot location using appearance-based paradigm. First, this algorithm compresses the image set using Principal Component Analysis(PCA) to obtain a low-dimensional subspace, called the eigenspace, and it makes a manifold that represent a continuous-appearance function. Neural network is employed to estimate the location of the mobile robot from the coefficients of the eigenspace. Then, Kalman filtering scheme is used for the fine estimation of the robot location. The algorithm has been implemented and tested on a mobile robot system. It is shown that the robot location is estimated accurately in several trials.

  • In this paper, instead of the conventional PD controller for balancing control of two wheeled inverted pendulum robots, an improved PD controller using the neural network is proposed and implemented for performance verification. First, a two wheeled inverted pendulum robot system is constructed for experiment. Next proper gains of the conventional PD controller according to users' weights are obtained for balancing the robot by use of the trial and error method. The PD gains based on the trial and error method are generalized through the neural network. Experiment results show that the PD controller based on the neural network has better performance than the conventional PD controller.

  • In this paper, we present a novel approach for the structure of Fuzzy Neural Network(FNN) based on wavelet function and apply this network structure to the solution of the tracking problem for mobile robots. Generally, the wavelet fuzzy model(WFM) has the advantage of the wavelet transform by constituting the fuzzy basis function(FBF) and the conclusion part to equalize the linear combination of FBF with the linear combination of wavelet functions. However, it is very difficult to identify the fuzzy rules and to tune the membership functions of the fuzzy reasoning mechanism. Neural networks, on the other hand, utilize their learning capability for automatic identification and tuning. Therefore, we design a wavelet based FNN structure(WFNN) that merges these advantages of neural network, fuzzy model and wavelet transform. The basic idea of our wavelet based FNN is to realize the process of fuzzy reasoning of wavelet fuzzy system by the structure of a neural network and to make the parameters of fuzzy reasoning be expressed by the connection weights of a neural network. And our network can automatically identify the fuzzy rules by modifying the connection weights of the networks via the gradient descent scheme. To verify the efficiency of our network structure, we evaluate the tracking performance for mobile robot and compare it with those of the FNN and the WFM.

  • Robots have limited computing resources and robot services have different requirement such as sensors, actuators, computational capabilities and timeliness. In this paper, we propose a dynamic management method of service execution contexts to perform various services efficiently and to meet the time constraint of service in network-based robots. The proposed method is tested in the real network-based robot system. The results show that the real-time requirement for services is satisfied and the resource utilization is improved. The proposed method provides the extendability and flexibility of sensors and services by aptly modifying service execution contexts and increases the reusability of service.
