  • Distribution energy resources have been increasing in recent years. However, output power is limited for distribution network stability. This study proposes an active distribution network that can reconfigure distribution lines by using an active phase controller. A conventional distribution network has a fixed structure, whereas an active distribution network has a variable structure. Therefore, the latter can increase the output power of distribution energy resources and decrease the overload of distribution line facilities. An active phase controller has two operation modes for minimizing circulating current during dynamic reconfiguration. In this study, voltage and current control algorithms are proposed for active phase controllers. The simulation of the proposed methods for active phase controllers is performed using PSIM software.

  • This study develops an expert system which solves the problems of the MTr/feeder overloads and the feeder constraints in automated radial distribution systems. Then, the objective is to perform the network reconfiguration by switching the tie and sectionalizing switches which eliminates the system violation, while achieving the load balance of the MTrs/feeders. To reduce the search space, an expert system based on heuristic rules is presented, and implemented in AI language Prolog. This system adopts the best-first tree search technique. The computational results are also prepared to show the performance of the heuristic algorithm developed.

  • Distributed generation (DG) in the future will play an important role in the electricity supply systems, in wich can provide DG capacity from a few hundred kW to tens of MW. However, it is connected to the local power grid, DG will have certain influence on the power quality of the power grid. One of the most significant effects is that they will change the configuration of the local power grid as well as affecting the operation mode of the grid. This paper presents a method of finding the optimal open loop, analyzing and selecting the appropriate mode of operation to reduce power losses of power distribution networks that includes DG.

  • Network reconfiguration in distribution systems is realized by changing the status of sectionalizing switches, and is usually done for loss reduction of load balancing in the system. This paper presents an effective heuristic based switching scheme to solve the distribution feeder loss reduction problem. The proposed algorithm consists of two parts. One is to set up a decision tree to represent the various switching operations available. Another is to apply a proposed technique called cyclic best first search. the proposed algorithm identify the most effective the set of switch status configuration of distribution system for loss reduction. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm, numerical calculations are carried out the 32, 69 bus system models.

  • This paper presents and efficient algorithm for the loss minimization by automatic sectionalizing switch operation in distribution systems. Ant colony algorithm is multi-agent system in which the behaviour of each single agent, called artificial ant, is inspired by the behaviour of real ants. Ant colony algorithm is suitable for combinatiorial optimization problem as network reconfiguration because it use the long term memory, called pheromone, and heuristic information with the property of the problem. The proposed methodology with some adoptions have been applied to improve the computation time and convergence property. Numerical examples demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed methodology using a KEPCO's distribution system.

  • A frequency reconfigurable antenna based on graphene and used for multi-band wireless communications is presented in this article. The proposed antenna, which consists of two radiating rectangular loops with a graphene extension, is analyzed for Global Positioning System (GPS) and Iridium applications. Its operating frequency is tuned through the implementation of a layer of graphene and thereby adjusting the applied gate bias. Furthermore, the results show a novel use of graphene for microwave frequencies while achieving a frequency reconfiguration with an improvement of the impedance matching and the gain. The results also prove the importance of graphene, with its exceptional properties, for a promising future in nano-electronics.

  • We propose a novel method to design a dispersion map for a WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) ring network with the capability of wavelength reconfiguration. The method is simple, but gives us an optimum set of DCMs (Dispersion Compensation Modules) which satisfies a given value of the tolerable residual dispersion. The proposed method does not depend on compensation method, fiber type, or modulation format. We also demonstrate numerically how it works with an example 10-node ring network.

  • This paper describes the open API with integration of semantic web service with PARLAY X based open API in 4G mobile network. It can be expected that the intelligence such as the context-awareness, adaptation and personalization in 4G mobile network will be deployed. But the existing PARLAY based network lacks in considering context-awareness, adaptation and personalization. Therefore, the object of this paper is to support the architecture and the Application Programming Interface (API) of the network service for the context-awareness, adaptation and Personalization in 4G mobile network The open API is to provide users with the adaptive network service to the changing context constraints as well as detecting the changing context and user's Preference. For instance, the open API can Provide users with QoS in network according to the detected context and user's preference, after detecting the context such as location and speed and user's preference.

  • This paper presents an application of genetic algorithms(GAs) for optimal configuration of distribution network. Three problems have been used to show how genetic algorithms are modified and applied. Solutions to the problems are found by minimizing the cost function which is directly related with balancing the loads. Simulation results show that genetic algorithms are technically feasible if they are tailored to meet the needs of real problems.
