This paper analyses the real-time performance of Ethernet based intranet whether it is applicable to the real-time network. Unpredictability of transmission delay by collision-delay-retransmission mechanism in CAMA/CD(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detect) of Ethernet is the major reason making hard to apply to real-time system. Both retransmission mechanism of TCP(Transmission Control Protocol) for reliability and sliding windows algorithm for high utilization make hard to predict transmission delay. Because real-time control network require fast responsibility and bustle of short-periodic messages, global-clock for collision avoidance and UDP(User Datagram Protocol) for high utilization of network are used. The mathematical models for time-delay that can be occured between ...

In this paper we suggest a dynamic quota allocation mechansim for B-ISDN(Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) subscriber networks. The quota adaptation decision based on the number of cells in the transmission queue is made distributively by each node in the ring network. This mechanism provides both fairness and efficiency for it enables each node to adapt its quota under asymmetric traffic condition. The simulation results show that substantial improvements in access delay time and throughput can be achieved with this algorithm.

The third generation mobile communication needs to provide multimedia service with increased data rates. Thus an efficient allocation of radio and network resources is very important. This paper models the 'burst switching' as an efficient radio resource allocation scheme and the performance is compared to the circuit and packet switching. In burst switching, radio resource is allocated to a call for the duration of data bursts rather than an entire session or a single packet as in the case of circuit and packet switching. After a stream of data burst, if a packet does not arrive during timer2 value ($\tau_{2}$), the channel of physical layer is released and the call stays in suspended state. Again if a packet does not arrive for timerl value ($\tau_{1}$) in the suspended state, the upper layer is also released. Thus the two timer values to minimize the sum of access delay and queuing delay need to be determined. In this paper, we focus on the decision of $\tau_{2}$ which minimizes the access and queueing delay with the assumption that traffic arrivals follow Poison process. The simulation, however, is performed with Pareto distribution which well describes the bursty traffic. The computational results show that the delay and the packet loss probability by the burst switching is dramatically reduced compared to the packet switching.

Emerging high broad band multimedia service with high quality has led to demand for challenge of optical access network and Passive Optical Network is one of the most important technologies for future optical access network. In this paper, we study the scheduling algorithm for WDM-PON in SUCCESS network architecture, a next generation hybrid WDM/TDM optical access network architecture. Due to economic implementation of this architecture, the shared resources efficiently need to be assigned and then we propose the efficient scheduling algorithm based on specific architecture and characters of SUCCESS. We evaluate and analyze the performance in terms of the average packet delay and throughput of the whole system.
We demonstrate an optical asynchronous transfer mode/wavelength division multiplexing (OATM/WDM) optical access network, using a router based on an optical header decoder to conduct next-generation communications. The router consists of a decoder or hardware analysis processing of the header bit and switches. The router in the OATM/WDM optical access network is a key technology by which to satisfy subscribers’ requests, including reliability, cost efficiency, high speed, large-capacity transmission, and elevated information security. In this study, we carry out experiments in which a header decoder delivers to 16 and 32 subscribers with a single wavelength in the router. These experiments confirm the decoder’s successful operation via hardware using 4 and 5 header bits. We propose that this system may significantly contribute toward the realization of an optical access network that provides high-quality service to subscribers of next-generation communications.

A channel-shared modified accelerative pre-allocation wavelength division multiple access (CMAP-WDMA) media access control (MAC) has been proposed for metro-WDMA networks, as an extension of modified pre-allocation wavelength division multiple access (MAP-WDMA) MAC protocol. Similarly, CAP WDMA as an extension of accelerative pre-allocation wavelength division multiple access (AP-WDMA) MAC protocol. Performance of CMAP- and CAP-WDMA was extensively investigated under several channel sharing methods (CSMs), asymmetric traffic load patterns (TLPs), and non-uniform traffic distribution patterns (TDPs). The result showed that the channel utilization of the CMAP-WDMA always outperforms that of CAP-WDMA at the expense of longer channel access delay for channel shared case while CMAP-WDMA provided higher channel utilization at specific network conditions but always shorter channel access delay than CAP-WDMA for non-channel shared case. Additionally both for CMAP- and CAP-WDMA, determining an effective CSM is a critical design issue because TDPs and TLPs can be neither managed nor expected while CSM is manageable, and the CSM supporting the best channel utilization can be recommended.

Multi-hop networks are a low-setup-cost solution for enlarging an area of network coverage through multi-hop routing. Carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is frequently used in multi-hop networks. Multi-hop networks face multiple problems, such as a rise in contention for the medium, and packet loss under heavy-load, saturated conditions, which consumes more bandwidth due to re-transmissions. The number of re-transmissions carried out in a multi-hop network plays a major role in the achievable quality of service (QoS). This paper presents a statistical, analytical model for the end-to-end delay of contention-based medium access control (MAC) strategies. These strategies schedule a packet before performing the back-off contention for both differentiated heterogeneous data and homogeneous data under saturation conditions. The analytical model is an application of Markov chain theory and queuing theory. The M/M/1 model is used to derive access queue waiting times, and an absorbing Markov chain is used to determine the expected number of re-transmissions in a multi-hop scenario. This is then used to calculate the expected end-to-end delay. The prediction by the proposed model is compared to the simulation results, and shows close correlation for the different test cases with different arrival rates.
Recently, mobile devices have supported wireless LAN as well as bluetooth, where the services such as heterogeneous network access and seamless mobility connection are important. Even though the mobility and physical network might be varied, an efficient communication mechanism for the network access and a robust mobility management of mobile devices are needed. In this paper, we design and implement a Bluetooth system with mobile LAN access capability. The proposed system has the following features; 1) IP connection is enabled by BENP in the link layer, 2) The networks devices of heterogeneous mobile devices are integrated into a single virtual network interface, 3) IP mobility between the bluetooth and wireless LAN is supported by mobile IP. The experimented results show that the packet loss and delay time during the handover duration is reduced by predicting the handover among different networks followed by the setup of any required parameters in advance.

This paper introduces the mobility-adaptive QoE provisioning solution. The key is placed on the intelligent selection of access network depending on the QoE criteria classified by the user mobility and the bandwidth demand for service. We further focus on the network-based smart handover scheme using the mobility-adaptive handover decision and the enhanced MIH-FMIP framework. The concept is the network-based calm service and the balance in order to facilitate vertical and seamless handover. In result, it is figured out that our solution improves QoE performance by selecting appropriate access network, repressing handover occurrence, and reducing handover delay as well.

This paper derives medium access delay of each AC(Access Category) in a stationary station using inter-departure time of IEEE 802.11e WLAN(Wireless LAN). Inter-departure time of IEEE 802.11e WLAN is obtained using saturation throughput of IEEE 802.11e WLAN which was the topic of our prior work. By using a simple queueing model, we evaluate mean queue length and mean delay for each AC on stationary condition. We calculate performance of each AC using this simple model and validate results using simulation.
