  • Purpose: This study analyzed the factors that increase the satisfaction of local residents' housing and residential environment, and derived implications for housing suppliers and policymakers in local areas. Research design, data and methodology: The analysis method derived latent group types through latent profile analysis, and cross-analysis and covariate variance analysis (ANCOVA) were conducted to analyze the differences between these groups. Results: The analysis results are as follows. First, there are four potential group types: good neighborhood facilities and low-level surrounding environment 1 group, low-level neighborhood facilities and good surrounding environment 2 groups, overall low-level 3 groups, and overall high-level 4 groups. Second, groups 1 and 3 tend to live in relatively old apartments. Third, as a result of distributed analysis, groups with low accessibility to neighborhood facilities but good environmental conditions and groups with high overall levels had relatively high housing satisfaction. Conclusions: As an implication, we discussed the need for development that highlights natural environment-friendly characteristics as well as access to neighborhood facilities. In addition, in order to derive more specific implications, the direction of follow-up studies considering job linkage and the effects of specific and various environmental factors was presented together.

  • This work is based on the motion estimation to handle the ill-posed nature. The algorithm used in this study that performs the motion estimation for overlapped block is used to calculate with using pixel of neighborhood block with higher correlation and present block by considering the correlation level of neighborhood block. The proposed method shows in a significant improvement in the quality of the mothion field when comparing the conventional methods.

  • An image segmentation result depends on pre-processing steps such as contrast enhancement, edge detection, and smooth filtering etc. Especially medical images are low contrast and contain some noises. Therefore, the contrast enhancement and noise removal techniques are required in the pre-processing. In this study, we present an extension by a novel histogram equalization in which both local and global contrast is enhanced using neighborhood metrics. When checking neighborhood information, filters can simultaneously improve image quality. Most important is that original image information can be used for both global brightness preserving and local contrast enhancement, and image quality improvement filtering. Our experiments confirmed that the proposed method is more effective than other similar techniques reported previously.

  • Hydrophone system has necessarily additional structures to resist installation and operation for military usage. In this paper, we assume that the hydrophone is a rigid circular cylinder and the neighborhood structure is a perfect reflector. Scattering fields by hydrophone and neighborhood structure are investigated to use a boundary element analysis program, SYSNOISE, which has an acoustic analysis capability. The pressure fields around circular cylinder with respect to the angle are evaluated.

  • Cracks in railway sleeper are an inevitable condition and has a significant influence on the safety of railway system. Although the technology of railway sleeper condition monitoring using machine learning (ML) models has been widely applied, the crack recognition accuracy is still in need of improvement. In this paper, a two-stage method using edge detection and convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed to reduce the burden of computing for detecting cracks in railway sleepers with high accuracy. In the first stage, the edge detection is carried out by using the 3×3 neighborhood range algorithm to find out the possible crack areas, and a series of mathematical morphology operations are further used to eliminate the influence of noise targets to the edge detection results. In the second stage, a CNN model is employed to classify the results of edge detection. Through the analysis of abundant images of sleepers with cracks, it is proved that the cracks detected by the neighborhood range algorithm are superior to those detected by Sobel and Canny algorithms, which can be classified by proposed CNN model with high accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose an error concealment method to recovre damaged block-based image coding schemes. Channel errors during transmission of image data such as bit errors or cell loss result in damaged image blocks in the reconstructed images. To recover damaged blocks is to estimate them using the correctly received or undamaged neighborhood information. In the proposed method, an overcomplete basis for a large block containing a damaged block at its center is introduced and damaged blocks are recovered by sequentially projecting the known neighborhood information onto the overcomplete basis function. Computer simulations show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional method in subjectie recovery qualities as well as objective ones.

  • This paper proposes a novel feature extraction method for unsupervised multispectral image segmentation based in one dimensional combined neighborhood differences (1D CND). In contrast with the original CND, which is applied with traditional image, 1D CND is computed on a single pixel with various bands. The proposed algorithm utilizes the sign of differences between bands of the pixel. The difference values are thresholded to form a binary codeword. A binomial factor is assigned to these codeword to form another unique value. These values are then grouped to construct the 1D CND feature image where is used in the unsupervised image segmentation. Various experiments using two LANDSAT multispectral images have been performed to evaluate the segmentation and classification accuracy of the proposed method. The result shows that 1D CND feature outperforms the spectral feature, with average classification accuracy of 87.55% whereas that of spectral feature is 55.81%.

  • The construction industry has introduced the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system to promote objective evaluations of the sustainability of buildings. Three important values to consider when implementing sustainability are the associated environmental, social, and economic impacts. Recently, researchers have begun to investigate the real estate value of LEED certified buildings in terms of the rental cost, occupancy rate, cost per unit area, and resale value in order to better understand the economic benefits of the LEED rating system. However, the economic benefits also encompass economic effects such as the impact of LEED certified buildings on neighborhood real estate values surrounding the certified buildings. This research examines whether the enhanced real estate value of LEED certified buildings in New York City extends to surrounding commercial buildings, utilizing spatial analysis via a Geographic Information System (GIS) and the hedonic pricing method to derive meaningful economic relationships. The results provide practical insights into the economic effect of LEED certified buildings that will be of interest to city officials and planners, as well as the owners, developers, investors and other stakeholders of surrounding buildings.

The input of fuzzy logic system used a distance and a change rate of distance. The output was used by site of neighborhood and learning rate. The rule base of fuzzy logic system was taken by using KCN simulation results. We used Anderson's Iris data to illustrate this method, and simulation results showed effect of performance.

  • Neighborhood Parks are important facilities for urban residents, which provide recreation and vitality to users. But it can degenerate into crime-ridden area in the absence of control system. Recently, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design is confirmed to be effective for safety enhancement, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport promulgates enforcement regulation about urban parks and greens. In the enforcement regulation, consideration of CPTED in park design is mandatory. However, there is no systematic guideline for the application and continuous maintenance control. So we develop evaluation indicators of neighborhood park about CPTED, and verify the weighted value of the evaluation indicator through survey targeting related field experts. Then, we evaluate safety of neighborhood parks in Busan using developed evaluation indicators, by three types of CPTED application level. On the physical design elements Busan Citizen Park which applied CPTED method from the design phase received the remarkably hightest score, whereas, on the social elements score was investigated differently in accordance with characteristics of each park.
