  • Auxetic structures with negative Poisson's ratio can be used to achieve high mechanical properties in energy absorption and destruction toughness. In this paper, we aim to design an auxetic structure which has a high negative Poisson's ratio and a stiffness over 50N/mm by using an optimization method. Length(L), thickness(t) and angle(${\theta}_1$, ${\theta}_2$) of an auxetic pyramid are the design parameters, and also stress, Poisson's ratio and stiffness are thr reaction factors. We used Box-Behnken method and conducted 4 factors - 3 levels experiment design. Finite element models are analyzed by using Edison program CSD_EPLAST.

  • Passive control may not provide enough damping for a stay cable since the control devices are often restricted to a low location level. In order to enhance control performance of conventional passive dampers, a new type of damper integrated with a rotary electromagnetic damper providing variable damping force and a flywheel serving as an inertial mass, called the rotary electromagnetic inertial mass damper (REIMD), is presented for suppressing the cable vibrations in this paper. The mechanical model of the REIMD is theoretically derived according to generation mechanisms of the damping force and the inertial force, and further validated by performance tests. General dynamic characteristics of an idealized taut cable with a REIMD installed close to the cable end are theoretically investigated, and parametric analysis are then conducted to investigate the effects of inertial mass and damping coefficient on vibration control performance. Finally, vibration control tests on a scaled cable model with a REIMD are performed to further verify mitigation performance through the first two modal additional damping ratios of the cable. Both the theoretical and experimental results show that control performance of the cable with the REIMD are much better than those of conventional passive viscous dampers, which mainly attributes to the increment of the damper displacement due to the inertial mass induced negative stiffness effects of the REIMD. Moreover, it is concluded that both inertial mass and damping coefficient of an optimum REIMD will decrease with the increase of the mode order of the cable, and oversize inertial mass may lead to negative effect on the control performance.

  • The behavior of nose-deck system during launch was examined by three dimensionless launching parameters, such as the relative flexural stiffness, the relative nose weight, and the relative nose length. The techniques of optimizing the launching nose were illustrated and equations of relationship between relative nose weight and relative nose length were derived under minimum conditions of the launching negative and positive moment. Equations of maximum positive and negative moment were suggested under the conditions. The optimum design method of the launching nose was proposed in launched continuous girder bridges. It was found that the ideal launching nose was to design that with the relative nose weight of 0.167 and the relative nose length of 0.836 to minimize absolute values of the positive and negative moment during launch.

  • Steel-Concrete composite girders have been used since early in the 1920's due to their advantages, which are lower weight, increasement of stiffness, slenderness, long span. However, in designing short to continuous composite bridges, negative moment occurs in mid-support and creates problems such as cracks in the concrete slab. Therefore, partially composite bridges are considered. In this time, slab-anchor is used in these. If the stiffness of shear connectors is insufficient, slip would happen at the contact surface. Partial interaction is the case that takes account of slips. In this paper, the evaluation of initial shear stiffness of slab-anchor in composite bridges is obtained from Push-Out specimen. Also, finite element analyses which uses the initial shear stiffness of slab-anchor got the experiment are carried out on simple composite girder and continuous composite girder. Futhermore, the ratio of composite according to various shear stiffness are investigated and the classification according to the ratio of composite is proposed.

  • Pneumatic vibration isolator has a wide application for ground-vibration isolation of vibration-sensitive equipments. Recent advances In precision machine tools and instruments such as nano-technology or medical devices require a better isolation performance, which can be efficiently done by precise modeling- and design- of the isolation system. This paper will discuss an efficient transmissibility design method for pneumatic vibration isolator by employing the complex stiffness model of dual-chamber pneumatic spring developed in our previous research. Three design parameters of volume ratio between the two pneumatic chambers, the geometry of capillary tube connecting the two pneumatic chambers and finally the stiffness of diaphragm necessarily employed for prevention of air leakage were found to be important factors in transmissibility design. Based on design technique that maximizes damping of dual-chamber pneumatic spring, trade-off among the resonance frequency of transmissibility, peak transmissibility and transmissibility in high frequency range was found, which was not ever stated in previous researches. Furthermore this paper will discuss about negative role of diaphragm in transmissibility design. Then the design method proposed in this paper will be illustrated through experiment at measurements.

  • Current specification prescribes that upper and lower reinforcement mat is required in the same amount to resist negative and positive moment in bridge decks. But the negative moment is much smaller than positive moment because the actual behavior of decks consists of local deflection of slab and global deflection of girder. From this study, the analysis method based on harmonic analysis and slope-deflection method was developed and verified by finite element method. The negative moment, obtained from this method, were smaller than those computed based on the KHBDC specifications as much as 40∼50% in the middle of bridge. The amount of reduction of the design negative moment was shown herein to be dependent on variable parameters as shape factor(S/L) of slab, relative stiffness ratio of girder and deck slab, and so on. This investigations indicate that the upper reinforcement mat to resist negative moment can be removed. But further experimental study is required to consider durability and serviceability. From this new design concept, the construction expense can be reduced and the problem of decreasing durability resulting from corrosion of upper reinforcement steel settled.

  • Two-way slab-column specimens were tested under monotonic loading increased up to punching shear failure to investigate the beneficial effects of fiber-reinforced concrete. The parameters for experiments are the placement of fibers within the immediate column region, the placement on the entire surface of the slab, and no placement of fibers. The effects of these parameters on the punching shear capacity, negative moment cracking. and stiffness of the two-way slab specimens were studied. According to the results the addition of steel fibers in the slab around the column results in a significant improvement in the performance including the increase of punching shear resistance, greater post-cracking stiffness and smaller crack width at service load levels.

  • In this study a general Galerkin FE lubrication analysis method for the compressible Reynolds equation in cylindrical coordinates is presented. Then, the method is applied for analyzing lubrication performances of spiral groove dry gas seals. The effects of toning and number of groove on performance indices are evaluated at low and high rotating speeds: 3,600 and 15,000 rpm. Results show that, for the primary design consideration performances such as the opening force and axial and angular stiffnesses, a negative or small coning and a large number of groove are preferred.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of calf tightness on gait, plantar pressure, and balance in adults. Methods: A total of 60 participants were divided into a normal group of 30 subjects with normal dorsiflexion angle (20-25 degrees) and an experimental group of 30 subjects with limited dorsiflexion angle (0-15 degrees) due to calf tightness. Gait ability and foot pressure of the subjects was measured with a treadmill, and the balance ability was measured by PROKIN system. Results: A significant difference in COP length, loading response, and single limb support was observed between groups. The COP length and single limb support ratio in the normal group was greater than in the experimental group, but the experimental group showed a higher ratio for loading response in the gait ratio. Conclusion: Our results indicated that calf tightness was negative effects on balance and gait ability, so assessment of the muscle tightness should be considered during exercise and treatment.

  • Composite beams are generally known to possess higher flexural stiffness and strength under the positive bending moments than the normal steel beams. However the these beams also exhibit large differences in flexural stiffness and strength when both positive and negative bending moments are applied. As observed during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake, these beams tend to be fractured on the bottom flanges under repeated cyclic loadings. The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate the composite beam detail, which is able to effectively resist the seismic loadings. The proposed system is composed of the slit on concrete slab around column. A limited experimental program was designed and conducted to investigate the hysteretic behavior of the proposed composite beam system. From the experimental data obtained from the testing of three specimens, the proposed composite beam detail is found to possess large beam rotation than normal steel beams.
