Purpose: This research aimed at exploring the antecedents of feeling ashamed and anger when customers perceive the rightness of object of criticism induced from in-group failure triggered due to my mistake or others' mistake, and identifying the effects of shame and anger on customers' consumption type. Research design, data and methodology: This research used 2 (failure caused by my mistake versus failure caused by others' mistake) between- subjects design, and collected 353 data through on-line survey, and structural equation model of Amos 21.0 was used to verify the hypotheses developed by reviewing the past literature. Results: First, feeling anger motivates customers to choose compensatory consumption behaviors whereas shame leads people to choose adaptive consumption behaviors. Second, customer's feeling of shame and anger is depending on the perceived rightness of the criticism induced from the failure caused by my mistake or others' mistake. Conclusions: Marketers should notice that even shame and anger are included to negative emotions, customers who feel ashamed are different from customers who feel anger in view of approaching consumption. They should conduct their marketing focused on the adaptive consumption to ashamed consumers and do the marketing based on compensatory consumption to angry consumers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify relationships among trait anger, life styles and physical symptoms in elderly people. Method: The participants were 348 elderly persons over 65 years of age who lived in Seoul, Geonggi Province, South Chungcheong Province and South Jeolla Province. The data were analyzed using descriptive $X^2-test$, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient with SPSS win 12.0. Results: Physical symptoms of the participants correlated with trait anger and life style. Trait anger in the elderly people had a significant positive correlation to cardiovascular symptoms. Smoking showed a significantly positive correlation to alcohol drinking and cardiovascular symptoms. Regular diet showed a significantly negative correlation to general symptoms, cardiovascular symptoms and gastrointestinal symptoms. Caffeine intake significantly negative correlation to general symptom and cardiovascular symptom. Conclusion: These results suggested that elderly people with a high degree of trait anger are likely to be high in perceived physical symptoms. Therefore nursing interventions to reduce levels of trait anger and change life style should be provided for elderly people.
This research examines the effects of parental attachment as a family-related variable, and depressive mood as an individual variable on anger expression style among Korean college students. Anger expression style was divided into three domains including anger-in, anger-out, and anger-control. The data were collected from 437 college student respondents using a self-administered questionnaire. The results demonstrated that male students displayed higher levels of anger-control compared to females, but no gender-related difference in the level of anger-in and anger-out. In addition, anger-control was positively associated with parental attachment. However, anger control in terms of anger-in and anger-out were negatively related to parental attachment and positively linked to depression. Additionally, parental attachment demonstrated a negative correlation with depressive mood. Multiple regression results indicated that after controlling for the effect of gender, anger-control expression style was influenced by parental attachment but not by depressive mood. In addition, anger-out and anger-in expression styles were influenced by depressive mood but not by parental attachment. Finally, implications for educators and clinicians working with college students and their family are discussed along with some suggestions for future research.
Interrogative sentences are generally used to perform speech acts of directly asking a question or making a request, but they are also used to convey such speech acts indirectly. In the utterances, such indirect uses of interrogative sentences usually carry speaker's emotion with a negative attitude, which is close to an expression of anger. The identification of such negative emotion is known as a difficult problem that requires relevant information in syntax, semantics, discourse, pragmatics, and speech signals. In this paper, we argue that the interrogatives used for indirect speech acts could serve as a dominant marker for identifying the emotional attitudes, such as anger, as compared to other emotion-related markers, such as discourse markers, adverbial words, and syntactic markers. To support such an argument, we analyze the dialogues collected from the Korean soap operas, and examine individual or cooperative influences of the emotion-related markers on emotional realization. The user study shows that the interrogatives could be utilized as a promising device for emotion identification.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify types and characteristics of anger expression in clinical nurses. Methods: Q methodology was used to analyze each individual participant's subjectivity on anger expression. A total of forty clinical nurses arranged 32 pre-selected Q statement cards on a 9 point scale, shaping the cards' pile into a normal distribution. Then the data from the arranged cards were analyzed using the QUANL PC Program. Results: Three types of anger expression were identified; 'reasonably overcoming', 'emotionally expressing', and 'internally mitigating' including both positive and negative aspects. Conclusion: Adequate strategies to resolve anger in clinical nurses needs to be developed according to anger expression types.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between depression, perceived stress, fatigue and anger in clinical nurses. Method: A descriptive survey was conducted using a convenient sample. Data was collected by questionnaires from four hundred clinical nurses who worked at a university hospital. Radloff's CES-D for depression, Cohen, Kamarck & Mermelstein's Perceived Stress Scale, VAS for Fatigue, and Spielberger's STAXI for anger were used. The data was analyzed using the pearson correlation coefficient, students' t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 12.0. Result: The depression of clinical nurses showed a significantly positive correlation to perceived stress(r=.360, p=.000), mental fatigue(r=.471, p=.000), physical fatigue(r=.350, p=.000), trait anger(r=.370, p=.000), anger-in expression(r=.231, p=.000), and anger-control expression(r=.120, p=.016). There was a negative correlation between depression and age(r=-.146, p=.003). The mean score of depression of nurses, 26, was a very high score and 40.8% of clinical nurses were included in a depression group. The main significant predictors influencing depression of clinical nurses were mental fatigue, trail anger, perceived stress, anger-in expression, and state anger, which explained about 32.7%. Conclusion: These results indicate that clinical nurses with a high degree of perceived stress, mental fatigue and anger-in expression are likely to be depressed.
This study investigated the extent to which negative emotions were portrayed, the ways in which children communicated about negative emotions, and to whom negative emotions were attributed during pretend play. The themes in which negative emotions were embedded were examined. Thirty 4- and 5-year-olds, each paired with a self-chosen peer, were observed and videotaped during a 20-minute play session. Observations presented the following conclusions: Anger and fear were the most frequently occurring negative emotions. Children communicated about negative feelings through emotion action labels and gesture. Children attributed a large proportion of their emotional portrayals to themselves and to play objects. Expression of affective themes embedded in pretend play included anger, fear, sadness, and pain.
This study examined the mediating effects of irrational beliefs on the relationships of middle school students' autonomy of psychological growth environment and behavioral anger responses(impulsive reaction, verbal aggression, physical confrontation and indirect expression). A sample of 346 first and second year students of middle school participated in the autonomy of psychological growth environment scale, the irrational beliefs scale and behavioral anger responses scale. Pearson's correlation analysis and regression analysis were performed. The results showed that: ⑴ The relations among autonomy of psychological growth environment, irrational beliefs and behavioral anger responses were significant. The autonomy of psychological growth environment had negative correlations with irrational beliefs and behavioral anger responses. Irrational beliefs produced positive correlations with behavioral anger responses. There were positive correlations among the subtypes of behavioral anger responses. ⑵ There were mediating effects of irrational beliefs between autonomy of psychological growth environment and behavioral anger responses. The effects of autonomy of psychological growth environment on impulsive reaction, physical confrontation and indirect expression were fully mediated by irrational beliefs. However, the effect of autonomy of psychological growth environment on verbal aggression was partially mediated by irrational beliefs. This study demonstrated that irrational beliefs mediate the relationship between autonomy of psychological growth environment and behavioral anger responses.
Purpose: This study was to identify the relationship between perceived stress, anger expression, and level of depression in cancer patients. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used. Data was collected by uestionnaires from 185 in- and out-patients who were diagnosed with cancer at 3 university hospitals and the National Cancer Center using Spielberger et al.’s Anger Expression Scale, Cohen, Kamarch & Mermelstein's Perceived Stress, and Derogatise's SCL-90. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression with SAS/PC. Result: The perceived stress in cancer patients indicated a significant positive correlation to anger-in(r=.288, p=.000), anger-out(r=.232, p=.001), and depression(r=.68, p=.000), but no significant correlation to anger-control. The anger-in of cancer patients showed a significant positive relationship to anger-out(r=.53, p=.000), and depression(r=.383, p=.000), but no significant correlation to anger-control. Anger-out showed a significantly negative correlation to anger-control (r=-.248, p=.001) and a positive correlation to depression (r=.240, p=.001). The most significant predictor which influenced depression in cancer patients was perceived stress, followed by anger-in and hobby, and these factors explained their depression with a variance of 54%. Conclusion: These results suggested that cancer patients with a high degree of perceived stress are likely to be high in anger-out and anger-in. Perceived stress and anger-in are major factors which affect depression in cancer patients.
Purpose: Anger has become one of the dominantly experienced emotions in recent years, particularly under the COVID-19 pandemic. Considering the critical role that anger plays in consumers' lives, the present research examines how feeling angry about money influences consumers' spending and money distribution decisions. Research design and methodology. Three experiments were conducted using different emotion induction methods (i.e., dictator game, autobiographical recall, and scenario). Results. Feeling angry about money decreased pro-social spending (i.e., less money distribution to the others), but it did not affect virtuous or utilitarian spending for the self-unlike past finding on negative feelings that increased utilitarian spending. Furthermore, whereas anger-tainted money decreased pro-social spending of that money, guilt-tainted money increased pro-social spending. However, the effects of guilt versus anger were not completely symmetrical. The antagonistic effect of anger was diffusive across spending on distant and close others, whereas the pro-social effect of guilt was limited to distant others. Conclusions: These findings help policy makers and financial institutions forecast how money will be distributed or circulated when it is likely to be dampened by anger under the pandemic. They also highlight the importance of examining the effects of discrete emotions (e.g., anger vs. guilt) beyond valence.
