'Distortional buckling' is one of the predominant buckling types that may occur in a steel-concrete composite box beam (SCCBB) under a negative moment. The key factors, which affect the buckling modes, are the torsional and lateral restraints of the bottom plate of a SCCBB. Therefore, this article investigates the equivalent lateral and torsional restraint rigidity of the bottom plate of a SCCBB under a negative moment; the results of which show a linear coupling relationship between the applied forces and the lateral and/or torsional restraint stiffness, which are not depended on the cross-sectional properties of a SCCBB completely. The mathematical formulas for calculating the lateral and torsional restraint rigidity of the bottom plate can be used to estimate: (1) the critical distortional buckling stress of SCCBBs under a negative moment; and (2) the critical distortional moment of SCCBBs. This article develops an improved calculation method for SCCBBs on an elastic foundation, which takes into account the coupling effect between the applied forces and the lateral and/or torsional restraint rigidity of the bottom plate. This article analyzes the accuracy of the following calculation methods by using 24 examples of SCCBBs: (1) the conventional energy method; (2) the improved calculation method, as it has been derived in this article; and (3) the ANSYS finite element method. The results verify that the improved calculation method, as it has been proved in this article, is more accurate and reliable than that of the current energy method, which has been noted in the references.

A two-degree-of-freedom out-of-plane model with contact stiffness is presented to describe dynamical interaction between the pad and disc of a disc brake system. It is assumed that the out-of-plane motion of the system depends on the friction force acting along the in-plane direction. Dynamic friction coefficient is modelled as a function of both in-plane relative velocity and out-of-plane normal force. When the friction coefficient depends only on the relative velocity, the contact stiffness has the role of negative stiffness. The results of stability analysis show that the stiffness of both pad and disc are equally important. Complex eigenvalue analysis is conducted for the case that the friction coefficient is also dependent on the normal force. The results further verify the importance of the stiffness. It has also been found that increasing the gradient of friction coefficient with respect to the normal force makes the system more unstable. Nonlinear analysis is also performed to demonstrate various responses. Comparing the responses with experimental data has shown that the proposed model may qualitatively well represent a certain type of brake noise.
The lubricative characteristics of negative pressure slider were performed by using coordinate transform method. Governing equation is derived by applying generalized coordinate system to the divergence formulation method. This method makes it possible to deal with an arbitrary configuration of a lubricated surface. The pressure profile of the slider is calculated. These results are compared to that from direct numerical method. The steady-state, including minimum film thickness, pitching and rolling angle are calculated by multi-dimensional Newton-Rapshon method. The stiffness and damping characteristics are also calculated.

Toroidally-wound brushless direct-current (BLOC) machines are compact, highly efficient, and can work across a large magnetic gap. For these reasons, they have been used in pumps, flywheel energy storage systems and left ventricular assist devices among others. The common feature of these systems is a spinning rotor supported by a set of (either mechanical or magnetic) bearings. From the view point of dynamics, it is desirable to increase the first critical speed of the rotor so that it can run at a higher operating speed. The first critical speed of the rotor is determined by the radial stiffnesses of the bearings and the rotor mass. The motor also affects the first critical speed if the rotor is displaced from the rotating center. In this paper, we analytically derive the flux density distribution in a toroidally-wound BLOC machine and also derive the negative stiffness of the motor, based on the assumption that the rotor displacement perturbs the flux density distribution linearly. The estimated negative stiffness is validated by finite element analyses.
In this paper an energy method is presented for the linear buckling analysis of first order shear deformable plates. The displacement fields are defined in terms of the shape functions, which correspond to a set of predefined points and are composed of significantly high order polynomials. The locations of these points are found by mapping the geometry using the naturalized coordinates and bilinear shape functions. In order to evaluate the method, fully clamped and simply supported rectangular plates subjected to uniform uniaxial compressive loading on two opposite edges of the plate are investigated thoroughly and the results are compared with the exact solution given in the monograph of Timoshenko and Gere (1961). The method is extended to the analysis of perforated plates, wherein the negative stiffness computed over the opening area from in-plane and out-of-plane deformation modes is superimposed to the stiffness of the full plate. Numerical results are then favorably compared with those obtained by finite element methods. Other cases such as; rectangular plates with eccentrically located openings of different shapes are studied and reported in this paper with regards to the effect of aspect ratio, hole size, and hole position on the buckling. For a square plate with a large circular opening at the center, diameter being 80 percent of the length, the present method yields buckling coefficient 12.5 percent higher than the one from the FEM.
In this study, strength reduction factors and inelastic displacement ratios are investigated for SDOF systems with period range of 0.1-3.0 s considering soil structure interaction for earthquake motions recorded on soft soil. The effect of stiffness degradation on strength reduction factors and inelastic displacement ratios is investigated. The modified-Clough model is used to represent structures that exhibit significant stiffness degradation when subjected to reverse cyclic loading and the elastoplastic model is used to represent non-degrading structures. The effect of negative strain - hardening on the inelastic displacement and strength of structures is also investigated. Soil structure interacting systems are modeled and analyzed with effective period, effective damping and effective ductility values differing from fixed-base case. For inelastic time history analyses, Newmark method for step by step time integration was adapted in an in-house computer program. New equations are proposed for strength reduction factor and inelastic displacement ratio of interacting system as a function of structural period($\tilde{T}$, T) ductility (${\mu}$) and period lengthening ratio ($\tilde{T}$/T).

The stiffness of slab concrete section is not considered as effective in the existing method of construction for continued steel box girder bridge. Using lifting system and filled concrete, it is possible to make stiffness of slab concrete section effective and improve stiffness of negative moment section. It was proved that the stress of upper flange in positive moment is significantly lower than case of existing method through the stress comparison. This stress difference made possible to rearrange flange thickness and as the result of this rearrangement, the amount of steel and height of girder can be reduced up to 13.23% and 11.5%.

A new concept of stock preparation for the increase of bending stiffness in paper and board was proposed. The 'stiff' fibers, which were mechanically not treated or treated slightly to remove fiber curls, were combined with extensively refined fibers (ERF) to produce higher stiffness papers than those where the whole fibers were refined. The combination of 'stiff' fibers and extensively refined fibers produced higher stiffness at the same tensile strength than the control furnish, in which all the fibers are refined together. In this concept, the fibers from recycled papers could be as much useful as the virgin fibers as long as they are stiff enough or they can produce highly bondable fiber fractions by extensive refining. Use of the concept in real paper mill needs considerations such as increase of refining energy, slower drainage, and added drying burden, but savings of wood fibers, utilization of more recycled fibers, and increase of physical properties may offset the negative concerns. The success of this concept implementation in mills, therefore, depends on the wood fiber market around the mills and the proper decision making for the papermakers about how to apply this concept.

A hybrid bridge deck is proposed, which includes steel bars, concrete and glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) plates with channel sections. The steel bar in the negative moment region can increase the flexural stiffness, improve the ductility, and reduce the GFRP ratio. Three continuous decks with different steel bar ratios and a simply supported deck were fabricated and tested to study the mechanical performance. The failure mode, deflection, strain distribution, cracks and support reaction were tested and discussed. The steel bar improves the mechanical performance of continuous decks, and a theoretical method is proposed to predict the deformation and the shear capacity. The experimental results show that all specimens failed with shear failure in the positive moment region. The increase of steel bar ratio in the negative moment region can achieve an enhancement in the flexural stiffness and reduce the deflection without increasing GFRP. Moreover, the continuous deck can achieve a yield load, and the negative moment can be carried by GFRP plates after the steel bar yields. Finally, a nonlinear analytical method for the deflection calculation was proposed and verified, with considering the moment redistribution, non-cracked sections and nonlinearity of material. In addition, a simplified calculation method was proposed to predict the shear capacity of GFRP-concrete decks.
