  • Purpose: The main objectives of this study were to examine relationship between depression and resilience in children with IDDM and identify factors associated with depression. Method: Data were collected from 63 children whose ages ranged from 10 to 15 years and who had been diagnosed with IDDM for over six months. Resilience was measured with an instrument developed by Kim (2002) and depression with the CDI by Beck (1967). Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean score for depression was 11.71 (range: 0-54) and resilience was 99.03 (range: 32-128). There was a significant positive relationship between depression and academic performance (r=0.598, p>.01), and negative relationships between depression and perceived parenting attitude (r=-0.579, p>.01) and resilience (r=-0.577, p>.01). The result of multiple regression analysis showed that academic performance (${\beta}=-0.419$, p>.01), perceived parenting attitude (${\beta}=-0.338$, p>.01) and resilience (${\beta}=-0.219$, p>.05) were statistically significant for depression. Conclusions: The children with IDDM who reported lower resilience, negative parenting attitude, and better academic performance were more depressed. It is important for nurses to identify the strengths of the children with chronic illnesses and to help them increase their resilience level to prevent depression. Parenting classes are necessary to help parents support resilience of their children and counseling programs for mothers of these children are also recommended.

  • The purpose of this study is to increase our understanding of subjective well-being in adolescents and to help improve it by investigating the relationship among adolescents' temperaments, perceived parenting affective attitude and subjective well-being. For this study, the subjects were 354 students from 4 different middle schools in Gwang-ju, Korea. The statistical analysis of the data was conducted by means of the SPSS 21.0 program using Pearson's correlations and hierarchical regression. The results are as follows: First, the temperament and perceived parenting affective attitude were correlated with subjective well-being. Among the temperament traits, novelty seeking and harm avoidance showed negative correlations with subjective well-being, whereas affection, reward dependence and persistence showed positive correlations with subjective well-being. Second, after the mediating effect of perceived affection on subjective well-being was confirmed, three temperament traits, viz. harm avoidance, reward dependence, and persistence, were identified as mediating factors. The conclusion of this study is that adolescents' temperament and perceived parenting affective attitude are related to their subjective well-being and can also predict their subjective well-being. Harm avoidance, reward dependence, and persistence, which are inborn temperaments, affect subjective well-being. Affection, which is a perceived parenting affective attitude trait, affects subjective well-being as a mediation variable. This study also suggests that it is more effective to influence perceived parenting affective attitude, which has growth potential, rather than temperaments which are hard to change.

The study consisted of 230 first grade middle school students from single parent (living with either mother or father only) families in the 4th year panel (2013) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI). All statistical data analyses were performed using SPSS version 21.0. The findings of this study are as follows. First, lower levels of depression and aggression were found among adolescents who perceived parenting attitude as more affectionate. On the contrary, higher levels of depression and aggression were detected among adolescents who perceived parenting attitude as more intrusiveness. The more the inconsistent parenting practices perceived by adolescents, the higher the degree of depression. Second, a higher level of life satisfaction was found among adolescent who were more likely to perceive positive parenting attitudes including monitoring, affection and reasoning. However, there was no significant correlation between negative parenting behavior and life satisfaction. Third, a lower level of life satisfaction was observed among adolescent who were more likely to perceive emotional problems such as depression, aggression and social withdrawal. Fourth, according to the analysis on the effects of parenting attitudes and emotional problems on life satisfaction, affection parenting of all positive parenting styles and depression among emotional problems had an impact on life satisfaction. The more affectionate a parent is with his/her children in parenting, the lower the degree of depression in adolescents, and the lower degree of depression in adolescents, the higher degree of life satisfaction was found among adolescents from single parent households.

  • Objectives: Adolescent suicide, a major cause of adolescent death, is affected by various factors, including attitudes toward suicide. This study investigated the association between parenting style and adolescents' attitudes toward suicide and the mediating role of attitude toward suicide between parenting style and suicidal ideation. Methods: We surveyed 1,071 adolescents from eight middle schools in Incheon, Korea. The survey included sociodemographic information, attitudes toward suicide, perception of parenting style, depression severity, and suicidality. Results: Students in the authoritarian parenting group had a more permissive attitude toward suicide compared with the democratic and permissive parenting groups. These students considered that suicide is justified in certain situations and that choosing suicide is an individual's right. They also had a negative attitude toward talking about suicide or intervening in others' suicide. This association remained statistically significant after adjusting for the impact of confounding factors that could affect attitudes toward suicide, except for suicidal processes and preparedness to prevent suicide. In the mediation analysis, we observed that some factors of the attitudes toward suicide mediated between authoritarian parenting attitudes and suicidal ideation, namely, suicide as a right, preventability, suicide as normal/common, preparedness to prevent suicide, and resignation. Conclusion: This study revealed the significant impact of parenting style on children's attitudes toward suicide. Educating parents about the appropriate parenting attitudes-sympathetic and rational-can help prevent youth suicide.

  • Objective: The gold of this study is to identify the correlation between mothers' rejective parenting attitude and children's humanity and adaptation to educational institutions, as well as to find out whether children's humanity could act as a mediating effect against mothers' rejective parenting attitude in the process of children's adapting to the institutions. Methods: The study was conducted on 259 children aged 4 to 5 and their mothers. The collected data were used to conduct Pearson correlation coefficient, Three-step mediated regression analysis, and the Sobel test using the SPSS 20.0 program. Results: First, children's institutional adaptability had a significant negative correlation only with 'mother's hostility'. Children's humanity had a significant positive correlation with their institutional adaptability. Second, mothers' hostile attitude had a direct or indirect impact on children's institutional adaptability. Conclusion/Implications: The results above suggest that children's good humanity and parents' friendly attitude are important in children's institutional adaptability.

  • This study investigated the relationship between mother's parenting attitudes and the adjustment to kindergarten of young children by gender and only-child/ sibling status. Subjects consisted of 210 3- to 6-year-old children and their mothers sampled from 3 kindergartens in Seoul City and Gyeongbuk Province, Korea. Instruments were the Maternal Parenting Attitude Scale (Ahn, 2000) and Kindergarten Adjustment Scale(Oh, 2006). Statistical methods were correlation and t-test. Results showed that mothers' hostile parenting attitude correlated with children's problematic adjustment to kindergarten and controlling parenting attitudes correlated with children's negative adjustment to kindergarten. Children's kindergarten adjustment varied by gender : boys' problem behavior was higher than girls'. Finally, being an only child or having siblings was not significantly related to kindergarten adjustment.
