  • The effects of homogenization, hot-forging, and annealing condition on microstructure and hardness of a modified STD61 hot-work tool steel were investigated. The ingot specimen had a dendritic structure consisting of bainite and martensite. Spherical VC particles of approximately 50 nm and cuboidal (V,Ti)C particles of about 100 nm were observed in the ingot specimen. After homogenization, the dendritic structure was blurred, and the difference in hardness between martensite and bainite became narrow, resulting in the more homogeneous microstructure. Needle-shaped non-equilibrium $(Fe,Cr)_3C$ particles were additionally observed in the homogenized specimen. The hot-forged specimen had bainite single phase with spherical VC, cuboidal (V,Ti)C, and needle-shaped $(Fe,Cr)_3C$ particles. After annealing at $860^{\circ}C$, the microstructures of specimens were ferrite single phase with various carbides such as VC, $(Fe,Cr)_7C_3$, and $(Fe,Cr)_{23}C_6$ because of relatively slow cooling rates. The size of carbides in annealed specimens decreased with increasing cooling rate, resulting in the increase of hardness.

  • In recent years, techniques for micro-assembly with high repeatability under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) are required to construct highly functional micro-devices. Adhesion phenomenon is more significant for smaller objects, becanse adhesional force is proportional to size of the objects while gravitational force is proportional to the third power of it. It is also known that adhesional force between micro-objects exposed to Electron Beam irradiation of SEM increases with the elapsed time. Therefore, mechanical manipulation techniques using a needle-shaped tool by adhesional force are often adopted in basic researches where micro-objects are studied. These techniques, however, have not yet achieved the desired repeatability because many of these could not have been supported theoretically. Some techniques even need the process of trial-and-error. Thus, in this paper, mechanical and adhesional micro-manipulation are analyzed theoretically by introducing new physical factors, such as adhesional force and rolling-resistance, into the kinematic system consisting of a sphere, a needle-shaped tool, and a substrate. Through this analysis, they are revealed that how the micro-sphere behavior depends on the given conditions, and that it is possible to cause the fracture of the desired contact interfaces selectively by controlling the force direction in which the tool-tip loads to the sphere. Based on the acquired knowledge, a mode diagram, which indicates the micro-sphere behavior for the given conditions, is designed. By refening to this mode diagram, the practical technique of the pick and place manipulation of a micro-sphere under an SEM by the selective interface fracture is proposed.

  • Cerium compounds such as Cerium hydroxide ($Ce(OH)_3$), Cerium chloride ($CeCl_3{\cdot}nH_2O$), Cerium carbonate hydrate ($Ce_2(CO_3)_3{\cdot}8H_2O$), Cerium oxide ($CeO_2$) were synthesized using recycled Ce precursor. Cerium(IV) oxide of nanoparticles were obtained by Ultra-sonication. Cerium-sodium- sulfate compound was synthesized through acid-leaching and addition of sodium sulfate from 99 wt% purity of Ce precursor as a starting material that was recycled from the waste polishing slurry. Moreover Cerium hydroxide was obtained from Cerium-sodium-sulfate compound by adding to sodium hydroxide solution. Then Cerium chloride was synthesized by adding of hydrochloric acid to Cerium hydroxide. Needle-shaped Cerium carbonate hydrate was synthesized in the continuous process and Cerium(IV) oxide with 30~40 nm size was subsequently obtained by the calcinations and dispersion.

  • Effects of austenitizing, cryogenic treatment and tempering conditions on the phase change, microstructure and Vickers hardness value have been studied in STD11 steel for tool and die. The volume fraction of retained austenite increased with a rise in austenitizing temperature, while the volume fraction of eutectoid $M_7C_3$ carbides decreased. The retained austenite could be reduced by cryogenic treatment i.e., maintaining at $LN_2$ temperature ($-196^{\circ}C$) for 12hrs but a little amount of retained austenite did not transform to martensite further although holding time increased to 24 hrs or more. The microstructure of the quenched and then cryogenictreated specimen showed nano-sized and needle-shaped carbides in matrix due to the decomposition of martensite by tempering, but that of the one without cryogenic treatment still revealed retained austenite by tempering even at $500^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper deals with the dielectric behaviors of $SF_6$ gas and prebreakdown growth caused by lightning impulse voltages In inhomogeneous field perturbed with a fixed needle-shaped protrusion on the electrode. The measuring interpretation of the external current induced by moving charges is described. The temporal growth of prebreakdown is observed by using a shunt and photomultiplier. The prebreakdown processes are initiated by the first streamer corona at a needle protrusion, the flashover of the main gap in the positive polarity is very sensitive to the local field and propagates into the gap with the leader mechanism. It Is found that the dependence of the prebreakdown phenomena on the polarity of applied voltages is caused by the effect of space charges. In addition, the proposed measuring techniques are very useful to perform the measurements of avalanche currents, corona discharges in inhomogeneous fields and partial discharges in voids.

  • Synovial sarcoma us a rare malignant neoplasm of the soft tissue arising in the lower extremity, inguinal area, and upper arm. The majority occurs in patients between the age of 15 and 40 years. The histologic diagnosis is based on the classical biphasic type with the distinct epithelial and spindle cell components. We have recently encountered a case of metastatic synovial sarcoma of the lung diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. A 34-year-old man was admitted because of a palpable mass on the antero-lateral side of the right tibia for 3 years. On admission, a well demarcated metastatic pulmonary nodule, measuring 5 cm in diameter, was also identified in the simple chest X-ray. Resection of the lower leg mass revealed typical histologic features of biphasic synovial sarcoma. Aspiration cytology of the pulmonary nodule revealed numerous clusters of spindle cells admixed with groups of epithelial cells. The epithelial cells had moderate-sized, round to oval shaped, and hyperchromatic nuclei. The cytoplasm was clear, but not distinctive. Interspersed tell elements were fibroblast-like spindle cells having elongated hyperchromatic nuclei.

  • Anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid is one of the most malignant tumors and survival for longer than three years after diagnosis is exceptional. Multinucleated giant cells of osteoclastlike appearance are seen un some of the anaplastic carcinoma, but only three cases in which the diagnosis was made by fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology are reported in the international literature. We experienced a case of anaplastic carcinoma with osteoclastlike giant cells in a 66-yr-old female, diagnosed by FNA cytology. The smears revealed two cell populations: multinucleated giant cells and large polygonal or spindle shaped malignant cells. The FNA cytodiagnosis of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma containing osteoclastlike giant cells was substantiated by subsequent biopsy.

  • The object of this study was to obtain data on air-distributions in two-phase up flow in vertical rod-bundle test-section. The test-section in this study was a hexagonal shaped 61-rod bundle where each rod was wrapped with helical spacers. The variables were flow rates of air and water and air inlet positions. Experimental data were obtained at the outlet of the test-section. The experiments were performed in two parts. Firstly, data were taken at increasing flow rates of air keeping water flow rates constant, and secondly, at simultaneous increase of air and water flow rates. At each flow condition, air supply position could be changed to 4 different positions. Data obtained by electrical void-needle technique were analyed and are presented here in graphical forms for comparison. The results of this study demonstrate qualitatively that air-distribution tends to be more uniform as water flow rates are increased. The air supply positions have noticeable effects on the pattern of air-distribution.

  • The crystal structures and morphologies of precipitates in $L1_0$-ordered TiAl intermetallics containing nitrogen were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Under aging at an approximate temperature of 1073 K after quenching from 1423 K, TiAl hardens appreciably due to the nitride precipitation. TEM observations revealed that needle-like precipitates, which lie only in one direction parallel to the [001] axis of the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix, appear in the matrix preferentially at the dislocations. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern analyses showed that the needle-shaped precipitate is perovskite-type $Ti_3AlN$ (P-phase). The orientation relationship between the P-phase and the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix was found to be $(001)_P//(001)_{TiAl}\;and\;[010]_P//[010]_{TiAl}$. By aging at higher temperatures or for longer periods at 1073 K, plate-like precipitates of $Ti_2AlN$ (H-phase) with a hexagonal structure formed on the {111} planes of the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix. The orientation relationship between the $Ti_2AlN$ and the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix is $(0001)_H//(111)_{TiAl}\;and\;_H//_{TiAl}$.
