Salivary duct carcinoma is an uncommon aggressive malignant epithelial neoplasm with similarity to intraductal carcinoma of the breast. This neoplasm occurs most often in the parotid gland of middle-aged and older males. About 7% of reported tumors occured in the submandibular gland. The report of salivary duct carcinoma with calcification is rare. We report a case of salivary duct carcinoma with calcification in the submandibular gland. The patient was a 73-year-old male with a mass of the right submandibular gland for 1 year. On the fine needle aspiration cytology, the aspirate showed scant cellularity, small clusters of tumor cells, and scattered small calcifications. Nuclei of the tumor cells showed mild pleomorphism and round to oval in shape, and cytoplasm was abundant and finely granular. Nucleoli were indistinct and necrosis was not noted. There were no cribriform or papillary arrangements of tumor cells. Cytologlc findings of salivary duct carcinoma are variable depending on histologic findings, and calcifications could be an additional cytologic findings.
Solitary fibrous tumor on the pleura is rare but should be included in the differential diagnosis on a peripheral pulmonary nodule. Cytologic features of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is not familar to the pathologist and may be misdiagnosed as malignancy. We report fine needle aspiration cytologic(FNAC) findings of a case of solitary fibrous tumor misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma in a 48-year-old woman. The FNAC displayed a mixture of bland-looking spindle cells and clusters of epithelioid cells, which have hyperchromatic nuclei with prominent nucleoli. The helpful finding to distinguish It from other circumscribed benign and malignant lesions is the presence of fibromyxoid matrix admixed with blood vessels and thin collagen fibers. Familiarity with these features is essential to avoid misdiagnosis and overtreatment.
A sex cord tumor with annnular tubules is a relatively rare ovarian neoplasm. The cytologic findings from a fine needle aspiration biopsy of neck metastasis of a sex cord tumor with annnular tubules are described. The origin of the neck metastasis was the right ovary, and the tumor was diagnosed six years ago. The cytologic findings were characterized by tumor cells arranged in solid or follicular patterns. The tumor cells formed rosette-like or complex tubular structures with central rounded or coalesced hyaline materials. It was difficult to distinguish this tumor cytologically from granulosa cell tumor, thyroid follicular neoplasm, Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor, and Brenner tumor, but complex tubular structures were helpful in discriminating between these tumors.
Synovial sarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumor accounting for 5-10% of soft tissue sarcomas. Most arise in the extremities and trunk, and a small proportion occur in the abdominal wall, head and neck legion, and mediastinum. It manifests different phenotypic subtypes that render their cytologic evaluation challenging. Moreover, cytomorphologic description of the epithelial component of synovial sarcoma is rare in Korea. We report a case of biphasic synovial sarcoma on the right lower extremity in a 49-year-old woman diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. The aspirate was moderately cellular and composed of a mixture of tissue fragments and dissociated cells with bland chromatin, inconspicuous nucleoli, and oval to spindle-shaped cytoplasm. Mitosis was rare. A monolayer sheet of epithelial component was seen. The cells in this monolayer sheet had more abundant distinct cytoplasm, round nuclei, and prominent micronucleoli. Histologic examination showed a biphasic pattern consisting of mostly sarcomatous stroma and a few small glandular areas at the periphery of the tumor.
Invasive micropapillary carcinoma (IMPCa) is a rare variant of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. This variant is associated with a set of peculiar cytological findings and aggressive biological behaviors. In most reported cases, IMPCa has involved massive axillary lymph node metastases at the time of diagnosis. We experienced four cases of cytological features of IMPCa, all of which were verified by histological examination. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) revealed malignant epithelial cells, which formed small, oval to angulated papillary clusters, which lacked central fibrovascular cores. The histological findings of the four cases revealed both pure and mixed forms of IMPCa, composed of cohesive malignant epithelial cells, surrounded by distinctive clear spaces and separated by thin fibrous septa. All patients evidenced axillary lymph node metastases at the time of diagnosis. It is important to identify the peculiar cytological findings which would differentiate IMPCa from other diseases.

Lymphoproliferative disorders, manifesting either as a primary lesion or as part of a generalized process, rarely involve the breast. The primary malignant lymphoma of the breast is rare. The cytologic features of this neoplasm have not been reported in Korea thus far. We described a case of primary malignant lymphoma of the breast, as diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in an 84-year-old female. FNAC smears showed high cellularity. The main cytologic feature observed was a carpeting of monotonous, atypical, enlarged lymphoid cells. These lymphocytes showed relatively round elliptical nuclei with some indentation. One or more prominent nucleoli were seen. Biopy from the breast mass revealed diagnostic features of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell type.
Intracystic papillary carcinoma(IPC) of the breast is a distinctive and very rare variant of intrductal carcinoma. The cytologic features of IPC have been rarely reported, and there are difficulties in distinguishing between benign and malignant papillary breast lesions. Herein we report a IPC of the breast in a 80 year-old female. Fine needle aspiration cytology revealed monotonous cuboidal epithelial cells in small clusters and individually scattered on bloody background. The tumor cells did not show overt cytologic atypia. With the histologic features of this case and review of the literature, the cytologic differential points are discussed.
Carcinoid tumors of the thymus are vanishingly rare, and the characteristic cytologic findings of this condition have never before been reported in Korea. Recently, we encountered a 58-year-old woman who had been suffering from general weakness and weight loss for several months. Radiological imaging revealed a large anterior mediastinal mass. A fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the mass showed predominantly scattered single cells, as well as some loose clusters of small cells with scanty cytoplasm. Some of these small cells exhibited plasmacytoid features, with moderately granular cytoplasm. We also discuss the cytological differential diagnosis between thymic carcinoid and other mediastinal tumors.
Background: Liver cytology is indicated and requested for evaluating hepatic masses in symptomatic or serendipitous cryptic discovered lesions. Objective: To determine the cytomorphological patterns of hepatic lesions identified among a group of Sudanese patients. Materials and Methods: This is an analytical descriptive hospital-based study included 165 patients undergoing ultrasound-guided fine needle is an aspiration cytology (FNAC)for hepatic lesions, at Al-Amal Military Hospital & Khartoum Teaching Hospital in Khartoum, Sudan. Clinical data were reviewed. Air dried Diff Quick stained smears were grouped into unsatisfactory samples, benign lesions, and malignant neoplasms. Results: Our population were consisted of 35 (21.2%) females and 130 (78.8%) males, with a male to female ratio 3.7:1 and an age ranged between 47 to 80, and a mean age $57{\pm}7$. Of 165 cases, 57 (34.5%) were benign, no atypia were noticed, 101 (61.2%) were malignant. Most investigated patients were found to have metastatic lesions. Conclusion: FNAC is a useful tool for investigating hepatic lesions.
Langerhans cell histiocytosis or histiocytosis X is a disease of unknown etiology characterized by proliferation of mature histiocytes. While a few descriptions of the cytologic features of eosinophilic granuloma ocurring in the bone have been published, reports of cytologic findings of lymph node-based Langerhans cell histiocytosis are very rare. We report the cytologic findings of a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology from the left supraclavicular and right inguinal lymph nodes in a 65-year-old male. Cytologic smears showed characteristic reticuloendothelial cells which have elongated, folded, grooved nuclei and abundant pale cytoplasms. Particularly, nuclei were highly irregular and multilobated. A few mitotic figures were present. The cytologic diagnosis was confirmed by tissue biopsies from the left supraclavicular and right inguinal lymph nodes. Proliferation of histiocytes were also present in the skin. Immunohistochemistry for S-100 protein, vimentin, $\alpha1-antichymotrypsin$ and lysozyme showed positive staining. Electron microscopy disclosed Birbeck granules.
