  • This study examined academic achievement of children in female marriage immigrant families (MIF) and children in general families (GF). Subjects were 78 MIF and 82 GF children recruited from Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces. Academic achievement was determined by questionnaires completed by their teachers; intelligence was measured with standardized intelligence tests. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and ANCOVA. Results showed that (1) academic achievement of MIF children was lower than that of GF children in overall academic achievement and individual subject achievement. (2) The difference in academic achievement between the two groups remained after controlling for intelligence. Results of this study illustrate the urgent need for supportive policy to enhance the academic achievement of MIF children.

  • This study examines the determinant factors affecting young people in preparing entrepreneurship in Indonesia. This study involved several variables, including the need for achievement, risk perception, locus of control, entrepreneurial attitude to predict entrepreneurial intention, and preparation for entrepreneurship among young people. The approach utilized in this study was a quantitative research design using a survey model. The participants of this study were recruited from young people in East Java, Indonesia. Structural equation modeling with Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) was implemented to test the hypotheses and the relationships between variables. The findings of this research showed that the attitudes toward entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial intention of young people in Indonesia are determined by several variables such as the need for achievement, risk perception, and locus of control. The correlation between variables showed one positive direction in which all independent variables can influence dependent variables. Additionally, the result of this study confirms a robust relationship between the attitude toward entrepreneurship and preparing for entrepreneurship among young people. Lastly, this study showed a positive correlation between entrepreneurial intention and preparation for entrepreneurship. This study suggests that government institutions and universities need to be concerned about entrepreneurial programs to promote young entrepreneurs.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the causal relationships of need, self-esteem, body satisfaction on aesthetic surgery attitude of female. The method of the study was survey research by using questionnaires. Subjects were 813 females of 10's to 40's living in Daejeon Metropolitan City and Gongju City, Chungchungnamdo. Statistical analysis methods were one-way ANOVA. Duncan's multiple range test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The results of the study were as follows. Women with lower body satisfaction and self-esteem had a tendency to keep the secret of aesthetic surgery. Women in higher social class and having higher need for dominance showed also strong tendency to keep the secret of aesthetic surgery. Women with lower body satisfaction and having higher needs for achievement and exhibition appreciated the value of aesthetic surgery more. Women with lower body satisfaction and self-esteem but with higher need for exhibition and dominance were more willing to confirm the aesthetic surgery Women with higher need for dominance but with lower self-esteem and body satisfaction were more willing to undergo aesthetic surgery in spite of high cost of surgery. Women having lower self-esteem, lower need for achievement, and lower body satisfaction were more willing to admit the risk tolerance of aesthetic surgery. As a conclusion, need, self-esteem, and body satisfaction constituted important characteristics which could affect aesthetic surgery attitude directly. Women having higher need were more willing to admit the change of body shape via aesthetic surgery.

  • The present study examined the causal relationships among nurses' perceived autonomy, job satisfaction, work environment (work overload, role conflict, situational support, head nurses' leadership), personal aspects(experiences, need for achievement, professional knowledge and skill) by constructing and testing a theoretical framework. Based on literature review nurses' perceived autonomy and job satisfaction were conceived of as outcomes of the interplay among work environment and personal characteristics. Work environment factors involved work overload, role conflict, situational support, and head nurses' leadership (task oriented leadership, relation oriented leadership). Personal charateristics included experiences, need for achievement, and professional knowledge and skill. Three large general hospital in Chonbuk were selected to participate. The total sample of 516 registered nurses represents a response rate of 92 percent. Data for this study was collected from July to September in 1998 by Questionnaire. Path analyses with LISREL 7.16 program were used to test the fit of the proposed conceptual model to the data and to examine the causal relationship among variables. The result showed that both the proposed model and the modified model fit the data excellently. It needs to be notified, however, that path analisis can not count measurement errors; measurement error can attenuate estimates of coefficient and explanatory power. Nevertheless the model revealed relatively high explanatory power. 42 percent of nurses' perceived autonomy was explained by predicted variables; 32 percent of nurses' job satisfaction was explained by by predicted variables. Tn predicting nurses' perceived autonomy the findings of this study clearly demonstrated the work overload might be the most important variable of all the antecedent variables. Head nurses' relation oriented leadership, situational supports, need for achievement, and role conflict were also found to be important determinants for nurses' perceived autonomy. As for the job satisfaction, role conflict, situational supports, need for the achievement, and head nurses' relation oriented leadership were in turn important predictors. Unexpectedly the result showed perceived autonomy have few influence on job satisfaction. The results were discussed, including directions for the future research and practical implication drawn from the research were suggested.

  • This paper investigates instructional strategies with potential for improving students' achievement in word problem solving. This review compares and analyzes the direct instruction (DI) and cognitively guided instruction (CGI) research on K-3 word problem solving mathematics students in a demonstration of my position that teachers need to understand student mathematical thinking to enhance students' achievement in word problem solving. CGI provides a more appropriate instructional model than DI for teaching word problem solving. For example, student-centered, conceptual understanding, and children's informal or invented problem solving strategies communicating with each other mathematically, etc. Korean teachers and teacher educators need to consider implementing CGI teaching strategies.

  • The domain of entrepreneurship has been dotted across various paradigms. Identifying and examining entrepreneurial intention and propensity to it spontaneously require the insight from the lens of psychological approach. The aim of this study is to examine the influence and impact of psychological factors on entrepreneurial intention; as it is found that in Bangladeshi context several entrepreneurship studies are undertaken, still the exploratory research on interplay between the psychological factors (i.e., self-confidence, locus of control, need for achievement, and tolerance for ambiguity) and entrepreneurial intention has been merely found. The study has chosen Bangladeshi university students as the unit of analysis and the ultimate sample size in this research is n=265. The current paper is a quantitative study where sampling method is followed by convenience sampling technique, and study data is collected through survey questionnaire. Data has been compiled into SPSS whereas, for hypotheses assessment, Smart PLS software is applied. The results reflect that self-confidence, locus of control, and need for achievement are revealed as contributory determinants of entrepreneurial intention while tolerance for ambiguity is found as an insignificant predictor. The current research is expected to offer an in-depth understanding about the significance of psychological factors in examining entrepreneurial intention.

  • Hasteful behavior means choosing the best suited methods while behaving fast and quickly. We can't conclude whether hasteful behavior is totally bad or good. Striving for achievement of own certain purpose reflects achievement motivation or need for achievement. However, this striving also has potentiality of missing confirmation, therefore the potentiality may cause errors. The aim of this study is to investigate the psychological structure and characteristic of the hasteful behavior. One hundred ninety-one students conducted Hasteful Behavior Questionnaire, Achievement Motivation Measuring Scale, and NEO Personality Inventory. We analyzed data of 188 respondents, because of missing value. The result of factor analysis showed that hasteful behavior consisted of 5 factors- 「Uncomfortableness」, 「Time Pressure」, 「Isolation」, 「Boring Condition」, and 「Expecting Rewards」. According to correlations among the hasteful behavior factors and the relationship between hasteful behavior and achievement motivation, we found that hasteful behavior had two aspects, one was "Missing Confirmation(MC)" and the other was "Need for Achievement(NA)". We also found that 「Time Pressure」 was related to the both aspects. MC had a positive relation to Neuroticism, whereas MC correlated negatively with Conscientiousness. On the other hand, NA had a positive relationship with Extraversion and Achievement Striving.
