  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess critical care nurses' perception, knowledge, and nursing practices regarding enteral nutrition. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted with 187 nurse participants who worked in one of the eight medical and surgical intensive care units (ICUs) from four hospitals in Korea. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Results: Although critical care nurses' perception toward enteral nutrition was high, knowledge was relatively low. The overall perception and knowledge of the nurses did not differ significantly between medical ICU and surgical ICU nurses. Perception of their own knowledge, in particular, 'nutritional goal' was lower for medical ICU nurses compared to surgical ICU nurses. Nurses also had limited knowledge about the significance of enteral nutrition, confirmation of feeding tube location, and nutritional requirements for ICU patients. They inadequately performed the following: changing the feeding tube every 24 hours, inspecting nostrils daily, and adjusting feeding schedule if feeding was stopped. Conclusion: Our results indicate that ICU nurses need up-to-date information about enteral nutrition. Based on the improved perception and knowledge, nursing practice activities with regard to enteral nutrition should be emphasized to enable nurses to provide optimal nutrition for ICU patients.

  • This study analyzed restaurant table settings with Gestalt's law of visual perception to obtain basic data for future marketing strategies. The research uses methods that involve applying images of restaurant table settings to Gestalt's law of visual perception, doing content analysis, and conducting a frequency analysis as well as a Chi-square test for classification analysis by visual perception. Results show a significant difference in the laws of visual perception, especially in the laws of nearness and closure, between table settings of different countries and backgrounds, such as Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Western cultures. In terms of the law of nearness, Chinese dishes were low, while other countries' dishes and Korean dishes showed high figures. In terms of the law of closure, Japanese dishes and western dishes had low values, while other countries' dishes and Korean dishes were high in their closure. Further studies on consumer awareness by visual perception classification need to be conducted.

  • People observe a lot of events in our environment and we do not have any difficulty to perceive events including speech perception. Like perception of biological motion, two main theorists have debated on speech perception. The purpose of this review article is to briefly describe speech perception and compare these two theories of speech perception. Motor theorists claim that speech perception is special to human because we both produce and perceive articulatory events that are processed by innate neuromotor commands. However, direct perception theorists claim that speech perception is not different from nonspeech perception because we only need to detect information directly like all other kinds of event. It is important to grasp the fundamental idea of how human perceive articulatory events for the convergence on speech engineering. Thus, this basic review of speech perception is expected to be able to used for AI, voice recognition technology, speech recognition system, etc.

  • This descriptive study was conducted to ascertain whether the needs of patients with cancer, their caregivers and their nurses changed according to the illness phases and if the perceived needs of the three groups were different for three categories of nursing needs. At two hospitals in Seoul and Choongnam, three groups of subjects, -patients with cancer(79), caregivers(92), and nurses(72) - responded to a questionnaire consisting of items on educational need(11 items), physical need(8 items), emotional need(9 items) using a 4-point Likert scale. The patients and caregivers were selected according to the phase of the cancer (initial, intermediate or recurred, terminal phases). Finding revealed that the level of perception and degree of satisfaction of the needs were low, just around two points in patients and caregivers. Of the three categories of needs, physical needs were received the highest score and the degree of satisfaction of physical needs was also the highest. There was no significant difference between the level of perception and satisfaction of needs in patients and caregivers according to the phases of the illness and the degree of per reception and the satisfaction of the patients were not significantly different and caregivers showed the same result. There was a significant difference in the level of importance of the needs of nurses according to the phases of the cancer. They perceived emotional needs were the most important in first phase and second phase, physical needs in third phase and the educational needs were more important in the first phase than in any other phase. The degree of importance of needs was significantly lower than the degree to which needs were addressed, according to the nurses response. In a comparison of patient and caregiver's perceived degrees of need, and need satisfaction, and nurse's perceived degree of need provision, patient and caregiver scores were lower than the nurses.

  • A substantial literatures on environmental risk perception have emerged since the late 1960s. Most these works focus on how people form risk perception, on what people believe, on difficulties in communicating information about health, safety, or environmental risks to non-experts. In this study, questionnaire surveys were conducted to sample from stakeholders(general public, environmental specialist, governmental official, non-government officials, journalist) during March and Aprils, 2000. Total number of responses was 1,803 including 773 persons of general public, 353 experts, 390 governmental officials, 111 journalists and 176 NGO members. Risk perception on 26 environmental issues were statistically analyzed to relate with the need to regulate each issues, interest and knowledge, experience of hazard, satisfaction in environmental situation, etc. This research aims to aid risk analysis and policy-making by providing a basis for understanding and anticipating group responses to environmental issues and improving the communication of risk information among general public, lay-people, technical experts, and decision-makers. This study concludes that those who are in charge of promoting and regulating health and safety of citizens should understand how people perceive about and respond to environmental risk. Without such understanding, well-intended environmental policies of governments would be ineffective.

  • The way to respond to climate change is divided into mitigation and adaptation. So far, the response of climate change has been focused on mitigation. The perception of response of climate change also has been focused on mitigation. However, climate change mitigation and adaptation should be highlighted in a comparable concept as a response to climate change. On the other hand, perception of the public on climate change affects the support or opposition of the general public about climate change-related policies. The purpose of this study is to assess awareness of the general public and stakeholders on the subject of climate change adaptation and to present a basis for a future national climate change adaptation policy. Questionnaire on awareness of climate change adaptation were composed of the climate change and climate change response (mitigation, adaptation) understanding and importance, the seriousness of climate change-related adverse climate event, the need for climate change adaptation measures, the degree of implementation, and the level of government effort for climate change response. Climate change adaptation-related awareness survey was conducted for the general public 1,011 people and stakeholders 101 people by telephone interviews. In this study, the perception survey has a difference in aspect of the contents and methodology. And We were able to present the three characteristics of the general public and stakeholders aware of the subject of climate change adaptation. First, the relative importance of climate change adaptation was relatively low. Second level of awareness about climate change response of the public was significantly lower than the stakeholders. Finally, the need to prepare the implementation of the sectoral level, the first adaptation measures was relatively low.

  • Purpose: This study intended to grasp real context of Cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related factors of Korean blue-collar workers, especially CVD-related knowledge, perception, beliefs, benefits and barriers of behaviors according to the health belief model. Methods: We interviewed twenty two workers working in two small-sized companies and performed two series of focus group interviews. Data were analyzed by deductive content analysis approach based on Elo & $Kyng{\ddot{a}}s$. Results: Excepting participants who have CVD risk factors, most participants had lower level of CVD risk perception. The level of CVD knowledge was low but there was difference by gender. CVD-related beliefs were 'fatal disease', 'caused by lifestyle' and 'difficult to prevent by themselves'. The risk reduction behaviors were motivated by current or family history of hypertension. But there were barriers to interfere practice of preventive behaviors such as poor quality of food provided by cafeteria in the workplace, frequent overtime, victim mentality as one of vulnerable social group, housework and financial burden, lack of facilities for rest and physical activity in the workplace. Conclusion: To develop intervention for reducing CVD risks in Korean blue-collar workers, we need to focus on improving CVD knowledge and perception and modifying work-related environments such as low quality of food and lack of facilities for rest and physical activity in the workplace.

  • The distribution of standing wreaths has reached about 7.1 million per year and the size of the standing wreath market is estimated to be at least 700 billion won. Among them, 20 to 30 percent are estimated to be reused, resulting in damage to flowerfarms' sales of 110 to 160 billion won per year. Due to the unique characteristics of conventional 3-tier standing wreaths in terms of transportation and installation, companies that lack design expertise have monopolized local distribution markets, and the issue of illegally using standing wreaths has been raised. These issues have highlighted the need for developing new designs and establishing a distribution system to expand the consumption of flowers. This study was carried out to identify consumers' perception of reused standing wreaths and the current systems introduced to prevent the distribution of reused standing wreaths such as the real-name standing wreath production system, the authenticity certificate system, and new standing wreaths. The results of a consumer survey showed that consumers' perception of reused standing wreaths has been high and that reused standing wreaths need to be actively regulated to establish fair trade order and protect consumers' rights. Although the effectiveness of the real-name system, the authenticity certificate system, and new standing wreaths was found to be insufficient, the introduction of these systems was essential and necessary for continuous promotion through broadcasting media.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate of the perception, elements and quality level of business strategy in domestic hospitals. We analyze survey data about strategy. Significantly, we find that domestic hospitals were greatly feeling about the necessity and importance of strategy, but elements and quality level of actual execution strategy is much lower. When evaluating level on the perception, elements and quality of strategy within each of Miles and Snow's strategy type, PA(prospector+analyzer) was higher than DR(defender+reactor). And result of structural equation modeling(SEM), elements had a significant influence on the quality of the strategy, a positive relationship between the components and the PA have been identified. Therefore, we propose that to increase the elements level in order to improve the quality level of strategy, and hospital administrators are need to be PA rather than DR.

  • Hangwa is a traditional food, corresponding to the current consumption trend, in need of marketing strategies to extend its consumption. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze consumers’ consumption patterns and perception of Hangwa to increase consumption in the market. A questionnaire was sent to 250 consumers by e-mail from Oct 8~23, 2009 and the data from 231 persons were analyzed in this study. Statistical, descriptive, paired samples t-test, and importance-performance analyses were conducted using SPSS WIN 17.0. According to the results, Hangwa was purchased mainly 'for present' (39.8%) and the main reasons for buying it were 'traditional image' (33.3%) and 'taste' (22.5%). When importance and performance of attributes considered in purchasing Hangwa were evaluated, performance was assessed to be lower than importance for all attributes. The attributes in the first quadrant with a high importance and a high performance were ‘a sanitary process’, ‘a rigorous quality mark’ and ‘taste’, which were related with quality of the products. In addition, those with a high importance but a low performance were ‘popularization through advertisement’, ‘promotion through mass media’, ‘conversion of thought on traditional foods’, ‘a reasonable price’ and ‘a wide range of price’. In conclusion, Hangwa manufacturers need to diversify products and extend the expiration date based on technologies to promote its consumption. In terms of price, Hangwa should become more available by lowering the price barrier for consumers who are sensitive to price.
