  • We have made a multi-wavelength study of the X-ray bright giant shell complex 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This is the one of the largest H II complexes in the Local Group. The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Parkes 64-m single dish observations reveal that the distribution and internal motions of H I gas show the effects of fast stellar winds and supernova blasts. The hot emitting gas within the 30 Doradus complex and the entire giant H II complex are encompassed by an expanding H I shell. We investigate the dynamical age of this H I shell and compare to the age of starbursts occurred in the 30 Doradus nebula using the radiative transfer model and the infrared properties.

  • We have carried out optical spectroscopic measurements of emission lines for a sample of Galactic planetary nebulae with Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars and weak emission-line stars (wels). The plasma diagnostics and elemental abundance analysis have been done using both collisionally excited lines (CELs) and optical recombination lines (ORLs). It was found that the abundance discrepancy factors ($ADF{\equiv}ORL/CEL$) are closely correlated with the difference between temperatures derived from forbidden lines and those from $He\;{\small{I}}$ recombination lines, implying the existence of H-deficient materials embedded in the nebula. The $H{\beta}$ surface brightness correlations suggest that they might be also related to the nebular evolution.

  • We developed a new grid-based Monte Carlo code to trace far UV He II line photons that are incident on a thick H I region and subsequently transferred through Rayleigh and Raman scattering with atomic hydrogen. In particular, we consider a neutral region that is moving away from the He II emission source which is either monochromatic or is described by a Gaussian profile. The resultant Raman scattered He II line profiles from a monochromatic source are characterized by a double peaked core part with an extended Raman red tail that is attributed to multiple re-entry events. Complicated behaviors are observed in the case of a Gaussian He II source including the formation of a secondary red peak near the Balmer center dependent on the H I column density. A preliminary application of our results to the CFHT data of the planetary nebula IC 5117 is presented.

  • We present analysis results of far infrared (IR) data for 3C 58. We use Herschel observations to measure the IR spectral slope of the source. Our measurements add new IR data points to exisiting high-frequency ones and allow us to improve the IR spectral energy distribution (SED) of 3C 58, and so a cooling break expected in the optical band can be located more precisely. We interpret the SED and the break using a synchrotron+ inverse-Compton model for PWNe and infer flow properties in 3C 58. Because the IR data are contaminated by foregrounds and backgrounds, we discuss impacts of the contamination on our conclusion.

  • Raman-scattered He II features are known to be present in several young planetary nebulae (PNe) including NGC 7027, NGC 6302, IC 5117 and NGC 6790. These features provide a new spectroscopic window to probe both thick neutral regions and far UV regions near Lyman series. We carry out photoionization model calculations using 'CLOUDY' to explore He II emission strengths dependent on the physical conditions of the central star. The emission nebula is treated as a simple spherical shell with uniform density. It is found that detectable Raman-scattered He II are obtained for T∗ ~ 105 K in the presence of a thick neutral component. We present mock spectra exhibiting Raman He II features based on the photoionization calculations and compare them with observed data. We discuss effective strategies for searching young PNe with Raman-scattered He II emissivities.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) are investigated by means of the unidentified infrared (UIR) bands. Continuous near- to mid-infrared spectra of PNe are obtained with the AKARI/IRC and the Spitzer/IRS. All 19 PNe in the present study show prominent dust emissions and we investigate the variation in the intensity ratios among the UIR bands. The ionization fraction and the size distribution of PAHs in PNe are derived using the UIR band ratios. We find that the ionization fraction of PAHs in PNe is around 0.0-0.6 and that small PAHs are scarce. The present result indicates a systematic trend of the $3.4{\mu}m$ aliphatic feature to become weak as the PAH ionization fraction increases.

  • The 4.8GHz formaldehyde absorption line in the dark clouds in M17 and NGC 2024 regions has been mapped. In both nebulae, we detected two $H_2CO$ line components. In M17, the 24km $S^{-1}$ cloud is closely associated with the HII region located in front of the radio continuum source, and the 19km $S^{-1}$ cloud is associated with the visual dark clouds with a larger extent which are closer to us. The 19km $S^{-1}$ cloud has a mass motion approaching to the HII region. In both clouds, a velocity gradient from the north-east to the south-west directions is observed. The linewidth has no variation indicating no collapsing motion. In NGC 2024, the 9km $S^{-1}$ feature is extended along the dark bar in front of the bright nebula and a weak second component at 13km $S^{-1}$ is confined to the immediate vicinity of the radio source. Indications are that the 9km $S^{-1}$ cloud is physically associated with the dark bar and the 13km $S^{-1}$ cloud is located behind the radio source. The angular extent, the column density, and the total mass of the clouds are derived. The radial velocities of other molecular lines observed in these clouds are compared.
