두 개의 구를 지나는 유동 패턴 (FLOW PATTERNS PAST TWO NEARBY SPHERES)

  • In this investigation, flow patterns past two identical nearby spheres at Re=300 were numerically studied. We considered all possible arrangements of the two spheres in terms of the distance between the spheres and, the angle inclined with respect to the main flow direction. It turns out that significant changes in shedding characteristics are noticed depending on how the two spheres are positioned. Collecting all the numerical results obtained, we propose a diagram for flow pattern on the distance vs. angle plane. The perfect geometrical symmetry implied in the flow configuration allows one to use that diagram to identify flow patterns past two identical spheres arbitrarily positioned in physical space with respect to the main flow direction.

  • In case of a line-to-ground fault at transmission lines, a portion of fault current will flow into the earth through the footings of the faulted tower causing electrical potential rise nearby the faulted tower footings. In this situation, any buried pipelines or structures nearby the faulted tower can be exposed to the electrical stress by earth potential rise. Although many research works has been conducted on this phenomena, there has been no clear answer of the required separation distance between tower footings and neary buried pipeline because of its dependancy on the soil electrical charactersics of the concerned area and the faulted system.

  • As a follow-up of our previous studies on flow-induced forces on two identical nearby circular cylinders immersed in the cross flow at Re=100 and flow patterns past them,$^{(1,2)}$ we present Reynolds-number effects on the forces and patterns by further computing flows with Re=40, 50, 160. We consider all possible arrangements of the two circular cylinders in terms of the distance between the two cylinders and the angle inclined with respect to the main flow direction. Collecting all the numerical results obtained, we propose contour diagrams for mean force coefficients and their rms of fluctuation as well as for flow patterns and Strouhal number for each Re. These diagrams shed light on a comprehensive picture on how the wake interaction between the two cylinders alters depending on Re.

  • Flow-induced forces on two identical nearby circular cylinders immersed in the cross flow at Re=100 were numerically studied. We consider all possible arrangements of the two circular cylinders in terms of the distance between the two cylinders and the inclination angle with respect to the direction of the main flow. It turns out that significant changes in the characteristics of flow-induced forces are noticed depending on how the two circular cylinders are positioned, resulting in quantitative changes of force coefficients on both cylinders. Collecting all the numerical results obtained, we propose a contour diagram for drag coefficient and lift coefficient for each of the two cylinders. The perfect geometrical symmetry implied in the flow configuration allows one to use those diagrams to estimate flow-induced forces on two identical circular cylinders arbitrarily positioned in physical space with respect to the main flow direction.

New damage localization indicator based on curvature for single-span beams

  • Most existing damage detection methods based on curvature should investigate the indicator value changes between the intact and damaged state. However, the 'footprint' in the intact state is usually not available for most actual beams. Therefore, a new damage localization indicator called Difference of Nearby Difference Curvature Indicator (DNDCI) was introduced for single-span beams. This indicator does not require prior information of the intact beam and is sensitive to the damage occurs on or nearby the measuring points. Practical and detailed application method of DNDCI has been proposed. Besides the idealized simply supported beams, it was validated by example that DNDCI is also applicable to the actual single-span beams supported by bearings.

Density-Based Opportunistic Broadcasting Protocol for Emergency Situations in V2X Networks

  • Vehicular-to-anything (V2X) technology is attractive for wireless vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) because it allows for opportunistic choice of a vehicular protocol between vehicular-to-vehicular (V2V) and vehicular-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. In particular, achieving seamless connectivity in a VANET with nearby network infrastructure is challenging. In this paper, we propose a density-based opportunistic broadcasting (DOB) protocol, in which opportunistic connectivity is carried out by using the nearby infrastructure and opposite vehicles for solving the problems of disconnection and long end-to-end delay times. The performance evaluation results indicate that the proposed DOB protocol outperforms the considered comparative conventional schemes, i.e., the shortest path protocol and standard mobile WiMAX, in terms of the average end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio, handover latency, and number of lost packets.

  • Microclimate of open spaces on campus tends to be important because it is related with people's comfort and it can influences their behaviors in outdoor during summer. Climatic components for 4 points, concrete paving, lawn, landscaped pergola and nearby forest on university campus were measured and evaluated. The results show that the air temperatures on paving such as concrete and lawn under the direct solar radiation were higher than the temperatures of canopied spaces such as pergora and nearby forest by up to $7^{\circ}C$ during summer. Characteristics of temperatures on lawn were similar to those on concrete paving. After evaluation, concrete surface was worst among 4 points, while landscaped pergola was the most effective facility in terms of thermal comfort during summer.

  • This is a positive study for researching of the cognition, realities of composition and utilization, and requirements of the future about green spaces of the urban traditional residences nearby downtown of Taegu. This study is constructed to the actual and servey examination, and the subject areas were Sam-Duk-Dong and Su-Sung-Dong. The results of this study were summarized as follows, 1) The dweller more Preferences anti-artificial and hearing than artificial and visually nature elements. 2) The best plant space was 'Madang', and the kind of best plant was ornamental. The main purpose of plants were admiration and to use as food. 3) The dweller's requirements rather hearing than visually elements. and they preference in indirectly method but they had subconslousness about directly plant plan. Also they want to water space.

  • The emission line objects such as planetary nebulae, symbiotics, gaseous nebulae, HII regions, novae, supernovae, SNRs, nearby spiral galaxies, dIrr, dE, and nearby active galactic nuclei, would be goldmines for us to dig with the 1.8m bohyunsan optical (BOAO) telescope. We discussed the importance of strategically important diagnostic lines and atomic constant calculation for a study of Galactic and extragalactic emission objects. The scientific background on a spectrometer development history is briefly presented and spectroscopic research areas other than the emission objects are also summarized.

HST Study of ESO 149-G003, a nearby dwarf irregular galaxy

  • We study the resolved stellar populations of ESO149-G003, a nearby dwarf irregular galaxy in the vicinity of the Sculptor group. We present F606W-F814W vs. F814W colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) obtained from HST/ACS archival data. We analyze the stellar content of ESO149-G003, as well as the spatial distribution of stars selected from stellar isochrone fitting analysis. Distance measurement using the tip of the red giant branch method, age measurement of various populations seen in the CMD, and isochrone fitting result will be shown and discussed.
