This study was carried out to predict blending ratio of cut tobacco(CT), expanded stem(ES), and expanded cut tobacco(ECT) in cigarettes. CT, ES, and ECT samples from A brand were, ground and blended with reference to A blending ratio, and scanned by near infrared spectroscopy(NIRSystem Co., Model 6500). Calibration equations were developed and then determined blending ratio by NIRS. The standard error of calibration(SEC) and performance(SEP) of C factory samples between NIRS and known blending ratio were 0.97%, 1.93% for CT, 0.50%, 1.12 % for ES and 0.68%, 1.10% for ECT, respectively. The SEP of CT, ES and ECT of Band D factory samples determined by C factory calibration equation were more inaccurate than those of C factory samples determined by C factory calibration equations. These results were caused by the difference of CT, ES and ECT spectra followed by each factory. The SEP of CT, ES and ECT of Band D factories determined by calibration equations derived from each factory samples were more accurate than those of determined by calibration equation derived from C factory samples. Each factory SEP of CT, ES and ECT determined by calibration equation derived from all calibration samples(B+C+D factory) was similar to that determined by calibration equation derived from each factory samples. To improve the analytical inaccuracy caused by spectra difference, we need to apply a specific calibration equation for each factory sample. Data in development of specific calibrations between sample and NIRS spectra might supply a method for rapid determination of blending ratio of CT, ES, and ECT.
This study analyzed the effect of organic solvent extractives on the classification of wood species via near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR). In our previous research, five species of Korean softwood were classified into three groups (i.e., Cryptomeria japonica (cedar)/Chamaecyparis obtuse (cypress), Pinus densiflora (red pine)/Pinus koraiensis (Korean pine), and Larix kaempferi (Larch)) using an NIR-based principal component analysis method. Similar tendencies of extractive distribution were observed among the three groups in that study. Therefore, in this study, we qualitatively analyzed extractives extracted by an organic solvent and analyzed the NIR spectra in terms of the extractives' chemical structure and band assignment to determine their effect in more detail. Cedar/cypress showed a similar NIR spectra patterns by removing the extractives at 1695, 1724, and 2291 nm. D-pinitol, which was detected in cedar, contributed to that wavelength. Red pine/Korean pine showed spectra changes at 1616, 1695, 1681, 1705, 1724, 1731, 1765, 1780, and 2300 nm. Diterpenoids and fatty acid, which have a carboxylic group and an aliphatic double bond, contributed to that wavelength. Larch showed a catechin peak in gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy analysis, but it exhibited very small NIR spectra changes. The aromatic bond in larch seemed to have low sensitivity because of the 1st overtone of the O-H bond of the sawdust cellulose. The three groups sorted via NIR spectroscopy in the previous research showed quite different compositions of extractives, in accordance with the NIR band assignment. Thus, organic solvent extractives are expected to affect the classification of wood species using NIR spectroscopy.
Comets, one of the least-altered leftovers from the nascent solar system, have probably preserved the primitive structure inside, whereas their surfaces become modified from the initial states after repetitive orbital revolutions around the Sun. Resurfacing makes the surface drier and more consolidated than the bulk nuclei, creating inert refractory dust layer ("dust mantle"). Near-infrared (NIR; 1.25-2.25 m) polarimetry is theoretically expected to maximize contrast of the porosity between inner fresh and evolved dust particles, by harboring more dust constituents in the single wavelength than the optical; thus, intensifies electromagnetic interaction in dust aggregates. Despite such an advantage, only a few studies have been made in this approach mainly due to the limited accessibility of available facilities. Herein, we present our new multi-band NIR polarimetric study of near-Earth object 252P/LINEAR over 12 days near perihelion, together with the results of optical (0.48-0.80m) imaging observations and backward dynamical simulation of the comet. Based on the results, we will characterize the dust properties of the comet and discuss the possible environmental (temperature and UV radiation) effects that could produce the observed phenomena.
The infrared specta of wood powders have been recorded both in the untreated stste and after treatment through 1%-NaOH extraction(2hrs) and alcohol-benzene mixture extraction. Differences between the spectra of 3 species(Pinus densiflora, Populus alba x glandulosa and Quercus mongolica) can be explained chiefly in terms of theirs chemical compositions through comparisions of the spectra of pure cellulose powders. 1. The peak near $3400cm^{-1}$ from wood powders appeared at $3420cm^{-1}$, which was shifted to left compared with pure cellulose powders. 2. Many new peaks appeared at 2725, 1730, 1660, 1640, 1600, 1510, 1500, 1460, 1385, 1270, 830 and $810cm^{-1}$ etc., which were not appeared in pure cellulose powders. 3. Pinus densiflora spectra of untreated powders showed small peak appeared at $2840cm^{-1}$, which was the most characteristic band. There were peaks at $1240cm^{-1}$ in Populus alba x glandulosa and Quercus mongolica spectra of untreated wood powders. 4. Treated wood powder spectra showed weak or no peaks at near $1730cm^{-1}$ and also at near $2920cm^{-1}$. $2840cm^{-1}$, near $1385-1365cm^{-1}$, near $1235cm^{-1}$ and $1110-1095cm^{-1}$ etc. 5. The Alcohol-benzene extractive spectrum from Pinus densiflora showed many peaks at $3600-2300cm^{-1}$, $3100-2800cm^{-1}$, $1700cm^{-1}$, $1450cm^{-1}$ and $1375cm^{-1}$ etc. The most characteristic band of the extractives appeared at $3100-2900cm^{-1}$.
One-dimensional photonic crystals (1D PCs) were fabricated by RF sputtering technique on p-Si (100), and fused quartz substrates. The 1D PCs structures consisted of $TeO_x$ (x=1.42), and $SiO_2$ with the difference refractive index. In order to estimate the effect on a defect level within 1D PCs structures, samples were prepared with both normal, and defect mode. The structural and optical properties were confirmed by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Ultraviolet visible near-infrared spectrophotometer (UV-VIS-NIR) respectively. In the case of a 1D PC normal mode without defect layer, it had a photonic band gap (PBG) in the near infrared (NIR) region. In the case of a 1D PC defect mode with defect layer, it had a sharp transmission band owing to a defect level, and moved towards the longer wavelength after exposing He-Cd laser with a wavelength of 325 nm.

We present medium resolution (R = 5000 - 6000) spectra in the near-infrared band, 1.4 - 1.8 ${\mu}m$, for template stars in G, K, and M types observed by the echelle spectrometer, IRCS, at the SUBARU 8.2 m telescope. The identification of lines is based on the spectra of Arcturus (K2 III) in the literature. We measured the equivalent of widths and compared our results to those of Meyer et al. (1998). We conclude that our spectral resolution (R = 6000) data can investigate more accurately the properties of lines in stellar spectra. The library of the template stellar spectra in ASCII format are available for download on the World Wide Web.

The watercore in apple is very important factor in storage and sorting of fruit. Most consumers tend to prefer the apple included watercore in immediately after harvest, however the watercore causes fruit flesh to brown during storage and lose the worth after all. But it is practically impossible to judge to the naked eye whether an apple has watercore or not. Therefore, the rapid, accurate and non-destructive analysis method for discrimination of watercore should be settled without delay. In this study we attempted the discrimination and quantitative analysis of watercore in apple fruit using near-infrared transmittance spectroscopy ‘Fuji’ apple fruits produced in Kyungpook of Korea was used in this experiment. The watercore content in apple was evaluated by graphic treatment of culled slice sections(10 mm). NIR transmittance spectra were collected over the 500 to 1000 nm spectral region with a spectrometer (Sentronic Co., Germany). The calibration models were carried out by partial least squares (PLS) analysis between NIR spectra data of apples and chemical data of watercore content. The spectra were different in absorbance between apple included watercore and not included one. Apple included watercore had higher absorption band than sample not included one at 732 and 820 nm. The calibration model seems to be accurate to predict the watercore content in apple fruit, the correlation coefficient (R) and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) were 0.99 and 0.93%, respectively. This result indicates that the PLSR calibration model by using NIR transmittance spectroscopy could be used for discrimination of watercore in apple fruit.
We present optical and near-infrared imaging and long-slit spectroscopy for the blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD) Mrk 49 in the Virgo Cluster. The surface brightness distribution analysis shows that Mrk 49 consists of an off-centered blue bright compact core of r = 10" and a red faint outer exponential envelope. The $H_{\alpha}$ image and color difference suggest that these two components have different stellar populations: a high surface brightness population of massive young stars and an underlying low surface brightness population of older stars. The redder near-infrared colors of the inner most region suggest that the near-infrared flux of Mrk 49 originates from evolved massive stars associated with the current star-forming activity. The total apparent magnitude is $B_T\;=\;14.32$ mag and the mean effective surface brightness is ${\mu}_{eff}(B)\;=\;21.56$ mag $arcsec^{-2}$. Long-slit spectroscopy shows that Mrk 49 rotates apparently as a solid body within r = 10" in a plane at position angle 55 degrees with an amplitude of about $20\;km\;sec^{-1}$. The measured radial velocity of Mrk 49 was derived as $1,535\;km\;sec^{-1}$; and the total mass of stars and gases is in the range of 3 to $6\;{\times}\;10^9\;M_{\odot}$. The mass-to-light ratios for the central region of Mrk 49 in I and B band are estimated 1.0 and 0.5, respectively. The upper limit of the dark matter to visible matter ratio seems to be < 5. The oxygen abundance is $12\;+\;\log(O/H)\;=\;8.21\;{\pm}\; 0.1$ which is about one quarter of the solar value while the relative helium abundance appears to be similar to that of the sun.
Temperature-dependent changes in near-infrared (NIR) spectra have been measured for oleic acid, and nonanoic acid in the pure liquid state. Particular attention has been paid to the 5400-4800 cm$\^$-1/ region where a number of combination bands appear. The NIR spectra of oleic acid show that a band at 5303 cm$\^$-1/ increases with temperature while that at 5270 cm/sup-1/ decreases. It ha been found from their second derivative spectra that these spectral changes take place stepwisely with two break points at 30 and 53$\^{C}$, which correspond to the phase transition temperatures oleic acid reported previously. Principle component analysis (PCA) has been carried out for the NIR spectra of oleic acid in the 5400-4800 cm$\^$-1/ region measured over a temperature range of 15-80$\^{C}$. core plots of the first and second principal components (PCs) show that the NIR spectra are classified into three groups; the spectra measured in the temperature range of 15-30$\^{C}$, those in the range of 31-53$\^{C}$, and those in the range of 54-80$\^{C}$. These temperature ranges correspond to those for quasi-smectic liquid crystal, disordered liquid crystal, and isotropic liquid of oleic acid in the pure liquid state. In other words, PCA provides unambiguous evidence for the phase transitions. similar studies have been carried out for petroselinic acid and nonanoic acid in the pure liquid states, but they do not show any evidence for phase transitions.
Imaging in the Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) provides several advantages over the visible and near-infrared regions: enhanced image resolution in in foggy or dusty environments, deep tissue penetration, surveillance capabilities with eye-safe lasers, assessment of food quality and safety. Commercially available SWIR imagers are fabricated by integrating expensive epitaxial grown III-V compound semiconductor sensors with Si-based readout integrated circuits(ROIC) by indium bump bonding Infrared image sensors made of solution-processed quantum dots have recently emerged as candidates for next-generation SWIR imagers. They combine ease of processing, tunable optoelectronic properties, facile integration with Si-based ROIC and good performance. Here, we review recent research and development trends of various application fields of SWIR image sensors and nano-materials capable of absorption and emission of SWIR band. With SWIR sensible nano-materials, new type of SWIR image sensor can replace current high price SWIR imagers.
