The effect of use of $H_2O$ as PCA(process control agent) to prevent the carbon contamination during mechanical alloying process and the precipitation behavior in Ni-20Cr-20Fe-5Nb bulk alloy after aging were investigated. NbC and $Cr_2O_3$ were formed during mechanical alloying and consolidation processes in the Ni-20Cr-20Fe-5Nb alloy in which methanol($CH_3OH$) was added as PCA. Formation of NbC in this alloy decreased the amount of Nb dissolved in the Ni matrix. The use of $H_2O$ as PCA in Ni-20Cr-20Fe-5Nb alloy prevented the formation of NbC and increased the hardness. The increase of hardness in this alloy was attributed to the increased amount of Nb dissolved in the Ni matrix. After aging treatment for 20 hours at $600^{\circ}C\;and\;720^{\circ}C$ of Ni-20Cr-20Fe-5Nb bulk alloy in which $H_2O$ added as PCA, ${\gamma}"$$(Ni_3Nb,\;tetragonal)\;and\;{\delta}\;(Ni_3Nb,\;orthorhombic)$ precipitates were formed, respectively. The precipitation temperatures of ${\gamma}"$ and ${\delta}$ in this bulk alloy were lower than those in commercial IN 718 alloy. It seemed that the lower precipitation temperatures for ${\gamma}"$ and ${\delta}$ in this bulk alloy than in commercial IN 718 alloy were due to severe plastic deformation during mechanical alloying.
We have grown a Nb/Gd bilayer on a$SiO_2$/Si substrate by using a DC magnetron sputtering system, which was fabricated in situ with silicon stencil masks. In order to investigate proximity effect of the Nb/Gd bilayer, we used a planar tunnel junction with an AlOx tunnel barrier by oxidizing the Al ground electrode at the bottom. A $Co_{60}Fe_{40}$ backing of Al was deposited so as to reduce the superconductivity of the Al, ensuring a normal counterelectrode. With a 50-nm-thick Nb layer, we have measured dI/dV (dynamic conductance) by varying the thickness of Gd, which can reveal the density of states (DOS) of the Nb/Gd bilayer as a function of the Gd thickness resulting from the proximity effect of a superconductor/ferromagnet bilayer (S/F). The SF proximity effect in Nb/Gd will be discussed in comparison to our previous results of the CoFe/Nb, Ni/Nb and CuNi/Nb proximity effect; Gd is expected to show different effects since Gd has f-electrons, while CoFe, Ni, and CuNi have only d-electrons. Our studies will focus on the triplet correlation in a superconducting pair.

Growth of $LiNbO_3$ single crystal by Czochralski method was carried out to study the piezoelectric effects. Piezoelectric coefficients and elastic compliances of the $LiNbO_3$ single crystal were determined by the resonance method of length-extentional mode of bar resonator from the room temperature up to $100^{\circ}C$. Two dielectric constants of $LiNbO_3$ were also determined by measuring the capacitance of the plate specimen. Measured constants were piezoelectric coefficients $d_{15},d_{22},d_{31},d_{33}$ elastic compliances $s^E_{11},s^E_{33},2s^E_{13}+2s^E_{44},s^E_{14}$ and dielectric constants $K^T_{11},K^T_{33}$. As temperature increased, elastic compliances changed very slowly while piezoelectric coeffiecients and dielectric constant $K^T_{33}$ changed very rapidly. Electromechanical coupling constant of zyw ($45^{\circ}C$)-bar was as high as 0.51 in room temperature and nearly constant up to $1000^{\circ}C$. The increase of piezoelectric coefficients was mainly due to the increase of dielectric permittivity.

Niobium oxide thin films were synthesized by reactive rf magnetron sputtering. The target was metallic niobium with 2 inch in diameter and the substrate was n-type Si wafer. To control the surface properties of the films, Nb oxide thin films were obtained at various mixing ratios of argon and oxygen gases. Nb oxide thin films were analyzed with alpha step, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The result of alpha step showed that the thickness of Nb oxide thin films were decreased with increasing the oxygen gas ratios. SEM images showed that the granular morphology was formed at 0% of oxygen gas ratio and then disappeared at 20 and 75% of oxygen gas ratio. The amorphous Nb oxide was observed by XRD at all films. The oxidation state of Nb and O were studied with high resolution Ni 2p and O 1s XPS spectra. And the change in the chemical environment of Nb oxide thin films was investigated by XPS with Ar+ sputtering.
Multistage deformation behavior of Nb-microalloyed steel and carbon steel was studied by torsion test with declining temperature T, constant pass strain $\varepsilon_i$, interrupt time $(t_i)$, and varying strain rate $(\.{\varepsilon})$. In the range of $1000^{\circ}C~790^{\circ}C$ and 4.00/sec~0.38/sec, the flow stress at each pass was correlated to the deformation variables. As the finished deformation temperatures are decreased to the range of $790^{\circ}C~900^{\circ}C$, Nb precipitates play an important role on the grain refinement of Nb-microalloyed steel. the flow stress of Nb-microalloyed steel was higher than the carbon steel's while the grain size of Nb-microalloyed steel was smaller than carbon steel below the temperature of $900^{\circ}C$.
The mechanism of formation of perovskite phase and the dielectric properties of PZMN[Pb(Zn, Mg)1/3Nb2/3O3] ceramics were examined using two different types of the columbite precursors, (Mg, Zn)Nb2O6 (MZN) and MgNb2O6+ZnNb2O6 (MN+ZN). The formatin of perovskite phase in PbO+MN+ZN system is characterized by an initial rapid formation of Mg-rich perovskite phase, followed by a sluggish formation of Zn-rich perovskite phase. On the other hand, thepyrochlore/perovskite transformation in the PbO+MZN system proceeded uniformly with a spatial homogeneity. The degree of diffuseness of the rhombohedral/cubic phase transitionis higher in the PbO+MN+ZN system than in the PbO+MZN specimen, indicating a broadened compositional distributjion of the B-site catons (Nb+5, Zn+2, Mg+2) in the PbO+MN+ZN system.
A bacterial strain NB01, isolated from wastewater, was found to utilize nitrobenzene (NB) as the sole source of nitrogen, carbon, and energy. The strain was classified as a member of a high G+C Gram-positive group and identified as Mycobacterium chelonae based on an analysis of its 16S rRNA gene sequence. The strain grew on NB with a concomitant release of about 63% of the total available nitrogen as ammonia, suggesting a reductive degradation mechanism. The optimal pH and temperature for degradation were PH 7.0-8.0 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The cell growth was retarded at NB concentrations above 1.8 mM. The degradation of NB followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics within the tolerance range, and the $K_m$ and maximum specific removal rate for NB were 0.33 mM and $11.04\;h^{-1}$, respectively.
Since superconducting wires have no resistance, electromagnets based on the superconducting wires produce no resistive heating with DC current as long as the current does not exceed the critical current of the wire. However, unlike resistive wires, superconducting wires exhibit AC heat loss. Embedding fine superconducting filaments inside copper matrix can reduce this AC loss to an acceptable level and opens the way to AC-capable superconducting coils. Here, we introduce an easy and accurate method to measure AC heat loss from sample superconducting coils by measuring changes in the rate of gas helium outflow from the liquid helium dewar in which the sample coil is placed. This method provides accurate information on total heat loss of a superconducting coil without any size limit, as long as the coil can fit inside the liquid helium dewar. With this method, we have evaluated AC heat loss of two superconducting solenoids, a 180-turn solid NbTi wire with 0.127 mm diameter (NbTi coil) and a 100-turn filamented wire with 1.4 mm diameter where 7 NbTi filaments were embedded in a copper matrix with copper to NbTi ratio of 6.7:1 (NbTi-Cu coil). Both coils were wound on 15 mm-diameter G-10 epoxy tubes. The AC heat losses of the NbTi and NbTi-Cu coils were evaluated as $53{\pm}4.7\;{\mu}W/A^2Hzcm^3$ and $0.67{\pm}0.16\;{\mu}W/A^2Hzcm^3$, respectively.
$LiNbO_3$ transistor showed relatively stable characteristic, low interface trap density, and large remanent polarization. This paper reports ferroelectric $LiNbO_3$ thin films grown directly on p-type Si(100) substrates by 13.56 MHz rf magnetron sputtering system for FRAM applications. To take advantage of low temperature requirement for growing films, we deposited $LiNbO_3$ films lower than $300 ^{\circ}C$. RTA(Rapid Thermal Anneal) treatment was performed for as-deposited films in an oxygen atmosphere at $600^{\circ}C$ for 60 sec. We learned from X-ray diffraction that the RTA annealed films were changed from amorphous to poly-crystalline $LiNbO_3$ which exhibited (012), (015), and (022) orientations. The I-V characteristics of $LiNbO_3$ films before and after anneal treatment showed that RTA improved the leakage current of films. The leakage current density of films decreased from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-7} A/cm^2$ at room temperature measurement. Breakdown electric field of the films exhibited higher than 500 kV/cm. The C-V curves showed the clockwise hysteresis represents ferroelectric switching characteristics. From C-V curves, we calculated dielectric constant of thin film $LiNbO_3$ as 27.5 which is close to that of bulk value.

Ferroelectric Sr$_2$(Nb,Ta)$_2$O$_{7}$ (SNTO) thin films were prepared by chemical solution deposition processes. SNTO thin films were spin-coated on Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/(100)Si substrates. After multiple coating, dried thin films were heat-treated for decomposition of residual organics and crystallization. B site-rich impurity phase, i.e. [Sr(Nb,Ta)$_2$O$_{6}$], was found after annealing, where its appearance was dependent on process temperature indicating the possible reaction with substrate. Dielectric and other relevant electrical properties were measured and the results showed a little possibility in ferroelectric gate random access memory devices.s.s.
