Effect of Internal Bias Field on Poling Behavior in Mn-Doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29 mol%PbTiO3 Single Crystal

  • Electrical poling is a crucial step to convert ferroelectrics to piezoelectrics. Nevertheless, no systematic investigation on the effect of poling has been reported. Given that the poling involves an alignment of spontaneous polarization, the condition for poling should be different when a material has an internal bias field that influences the domain stability. Here, we present the effect of poling profile on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties in Mn-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29 mol%PbTiO3 single crystal with an internal bias field. We showed that both the dielectric permittivity and the piezoelectric coefficient were further enhanced when the poling procedure ends with a field application along the opposite direction to the internal bias field. We expect that the current finding would give a clue to understanding the true mechanism for the electrical poling.

  • Lead-free $0.98(Na_{0.5},K_{0.5})NbO_3-0.02Li(Sb_{0.17}Ti_{0.83})O_3$ (hereafter 0.98NKN-0.02LST) ceramics doped with $Ag_2O$ were prepared using a conventional mixed oxide method. The specimen showed superior structural and electrical properties when 1 mol% $Ag_2O$ was doped. For the 0.98NKN-0.02LST+1.0mol%$Ag_2O$ ceramics sintered at $1,100^{\circ}C$, piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) of sample showed the optimum values of 207 pC/N. The 0.98NKN-0.02LST+1.0 mol%$Ag_2O$ ceramics are a promising candidate for lead-free piezoelectric materials.

  • The effects of dopants on the modification of microstructure of UO$_2$ and UO$_2$-4wt%CeO$_2$ sintered pellets have been studied in hydrogen and $CO_2$/CO mixture atmospheres by using $Ta_2O_5$, TiO$_2$ and $Nb_2O_5$ as sintering additives. The dopant were added as oxide powders and homogenized by attrition milling. The mixed powders were pressed, and then sintered in hydrogen at 1$700^{\circ}C$ , or in oxidizing atmosphere using Controlled $CO_2$/CO mixtures at 125$0^{\circ}C$. Both density and microstructure of UO$_2$ are modified by the addition of dopants in reducing atmosphere. The sintered density is increased with $Ta_2O_5$ addition up to 0.33wt% and subsequently decreased with higher content of the additive. The effect on the densification and the gain growth are apparent with the addition of 0.24wt% $Nb_2O_5$. With 0.lwt% titania and 0.6wt% $Ta_2O_5$, the sintered density is decreased, but the grain size is increased. In oxidizing atmosphere, the grain sizes for UO$_2$ doped with the above additives are smaller than that for pure UO$_2$. The grain size of Ta or Nb-doped UO$_2$ is decreased with increasing $CO_2$/CO ratio, but that of pure UO$_2$or T-doped UO$_2$ is increased. A large portion of second phases is observed in UO$_2$ doped with 0.lwt% TiO$_2$ sintered in hydrogen atmosphere, while, in $CO_2$/CO atmospheres, the second phases or dopant agglomerates are not observed. For UO$_2$-4wt%CeO$_2$ mixed oxide, the effect of additives on the gain growth is not so much as that for the pure UO$_2$. This is attributed to the formation of clusters by dopant cations and Ce ions, so that the additives contribute to a lesser exent to the grain growth for the mixed oxide.

  • The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of 0.36Pb($Sc_{1/2}Nb_{1/2}$)$O_{3}$-0.25Pb($Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}$)$O_{3}$-0.39Pb$TiO_{3}$ (hereafter PSNNT) at the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition were investigated with $0{\sim}2.5$ mot% $MnO_{2}$ doping. Bulk density, dielectric loss and tetragonality of crystal structure were all improved with increasing $MnO_{2}$ additive content. With increasing $MnO_{2}$ additive content, the electromechanical coupling factor and quality factor were also increased: Electromechanical coupling $k_{p}$ and quality factor $Q_{m}$ at 2.0 mol% $MnO_{2}$ doping with were showed highest values of 55.6 % and 252, respectively.

  • Lead-free $0.94(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})NbO_3$-0.06Ba$(Ti_{0.9}Sn_{0.1})O_3$ [0.94NKN-0.06BTS] ceramics doped with 1 mol% $MnO_2$ were synthesized by a conventional solid state method. The phase transitional behavior and piezoelectric properties of the ceramics sintered at various temperatures were investigated. The 0.94NKN-0.06BTS ceramics sintered at $1050^{\circ}C$, having morphotropic phase boundary of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases, exhibited a microstructure with abnormal grain growth. A diffused phase transition behavior for all the specimens was verified as high degree of diffuseness (${\gamma}$) values from 1.45 to 1.79. A high piezoelectric constant of $d_{33}=256$ pC/N and a satisfactory electromechanical coupling factor of $k_p=42%$ were obtained for the relatively dense 0.94NKN-0.06BTS ceramics sintered at $1050^{\circ}C$.

Effects of Additives on the Characteristics and Microstructure of $UO_2$ Pellet ($UO_2$ 소결체의 특성 및 미세구조에 미치는 첨가제의 영향)

  • Effect of various kinds of additive such as AlOOH, Al(OH)3, Al2Si2O5(OH)4, Nb2O5, TiO2 and MgO on the properties and microstructures of UO2 pellet has been examined. All the tested dopants had played a role to reduce sintered density and open porosity. It was revealed that the addition of TiO2 made pellet more stable thermally. UO2 pellet doped with 0.2wt% TiO2 was swelled rather than densified after annealing for 24 hrs at 1$700^{\circ}C$. It was attributed to large pore with spherical shape. Titinia and silicon coexisted with Al element were more effective to increase grain size than other additives. It could be also revealed that the formation of liquid phase was the main cause of grain growth.

  • Piezoelectric properties of $(Pb_{1-x}Y_x)[(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.15}(Zr_{1/2}Ti_{1/2)})_{0.85}]O_{3}$ (x=0~0.05) ceramics were investigated, The stoichiometric PNN-PZT ceramics required the sintering temperature above $1100^{\circ}C$, but the addition of $Y_{2}O_{3}$ in the PNN-PZT ceramic lowered the sintering temperature down to $1000^{\circ}C$. In case of x=0.005, the electro-mechanical coupling $factor(K_p)$, the piezoelectric $constant(d_{33})$, and the maximum strain ratio of PNN-PZT ceramics sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ were 53.1%, 395pC/N, and $2200{\times}10^{-6}$ respectively, A 30-layer piezoelectric actuator$(10{\times}10{\times}1.7mm)$ fabricated with the above material showed the maximum strain of $2.09{\mu}m$ under 100V DC bias.

Effect of Mn on Dielectric and Piezoelectric Properties of 71PMN-29PT [71Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29PbTiO3] Single Crystals and Polycrystalline Ceramics

  • In order to investigate the effect of Mn on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of PMN-PT [$Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-PbTiO_3$], four different types of 71PMN-29PT samples were prepared using the solid-state single crystal growth (SSCG) method: (1) Undoped single crystals, (2) undoped polycrystalline ceramics, (3) Mn-doped single crystals, and (4) Mn-doped polycrystalline ceramics. In the case of single crystals, the addition of 0.5 mol% Mn to PMN-PT decreased the dielectric constant ($K_3{^T}$), piezoelectric charge constant ($d_{33}$), and dielectric loss (tan ${\delta}$) by about 50%, but increased the coercive electric field ($E_C$) by 50% and the electromechanical quality factor ($Q_m$) by 500%, respectively. The addition of Mn to PMN-PT induced an internal bias electric field ($E_I$) and thus specimens changed from piezoelectrically soft-type to piezoelectrically hard-type. This Mn effect was more significant in single crystals than in ceramics. These results demonstrate that Mn-doped 71PMN-29PT single crystals, because they are piezoelectrically hard and simultaneously have high piezoelectric and electromechanical properties, have great potential for application in fields of SONAR transducers, high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), and ultrasonic motors.

  • The semiconducting bodies were prepared by doping the bariume titanate with $Sb_2O_3,Nb_2O_5$and by subsequent sintering in air. The sintered bodies were annealed between $1100^{\circ}C$ and $1250^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes to 2 hours in air. The resistivity was measured as a function of temperature from $20^{\circ}C$ to $240^{\circ}C$. The anomalous effect in resistivity occurred all of the $Nb_2O_5$ and $Sb_2O_3$doped barium titanate specimens, which were sintered in air atmosphere, and the most effective PTC effect occurred through 1 hour of sintering time at $1350^{\circ}C$ and 30 minute of annealing time at $1200^{\circ}C$. The resistivity - temperature characteristics seem to be intimately related to oxygen adsorption at grain boundaries and also to the thickness of insulating layers formed at grain boundaries during heat treatment.

  • Nb doped strontium titanate single crystals were grown by the floating zone method. The doping amount of $Nb_2O_5$ was 0.2 wt %. Those crystals were grown in air and N z atmosphere and the growth rate was 5 mmlhr and rotation speed of upper and lower shaft was 30 rpm. The shapes of melt - feed rod interface depending on sintering temperatures were observed. In air atmosphere, the flow rate of air was 1.5 ${\ell}/min$ and in $N_2$ atmosphere, that of $N_2$ gas was 0.5 ${\ell}/min$. As grown crystals were analyseQ by XRD, Laue back - reflection and chemical etching. After annealing in $N_2$ atmosphere, resistivities of crystals were measured and the activation energies of each samples were calculated.
