  • Dielectric and electrostrictive properties of 0.99Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.01Pb(Mn2/3W1/3)O3 system using KCl-NaCl salts have been investigated as a function of the amount of excess MgO. For the specimens calcined at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1h and then sintered at 115$0^{\circ}C$ for 4h, the perovskite phase and the relative density were about 98% and 95%, respectively. With the addition of excess MgO up to 10mol%, the dielectric constant and the electrostrictive strain increased due to the increase of density and grain size, and these properties were degraded by the further addition of excess MgO. For the 10mol% excess MgO added specimen, the maximum electrostrictive strain, Xmax, and the electrostrictive coefficient, Q11, were 4.5$\times$10-4, 3.5$\times$10-2m4/C2, respectively. These results were correlated with the property of PMW and microstructure.

  • The Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu alloys containing Ca and Al were rapidly solidified to thin ribbons by melt-spinning. The ribbons were ball-milled to make powders, and then mixed with 1 wt.% water glass and 1.5 wt.% lubricant. The mixed powders were burn-off, and then compacted to form toroidal-shaped cores, which were heat treated to crystallize the nano-grain structure and to remove residual stress of material. The characteristics of the powder cores were analyzed using a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a B-H meter. The microstructures were observed using transmission electron microscope (TEM). The optimized soft magnetic properties (${\mu}_i$ and $P_{cv}$) of the powder cores were obtained from the Ca and Al containing alloys after annealing at $530^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The core loss of Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu-based powder cores was reduced by the addition of Ca element, and the initial permeability increased due to the addition of Al element.

  • Dense $0.95(Na_{0.5}K_{0.5})NbO_3-0.05LiTaO_3$ (NKN-LT) ceramics were developed by conventional sintering process. Sintering temperature was lowered by adding $Na_2O$ as a sintering aid. The electrical properties of NKN-LT ceramics were investigated as a function of $Na_2O$ concentration. When the sample sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 4h with the addition of 1 mol% $Na_2O$, electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) and piezoelectric coefficient ($d_{33}$) of NKN-LT ceramics were found to reach the highest values of 0.43 and 190 pC/N, respectively.

  • A 90 wt% Mg-10 wt% $NbF_5$ sample was prepared by mechanical milling under $H_2$ (reactive mechanical grinding). Its hydriding and dehydriding properties were then examined. Activation of the 90 wt% Mg-10 wt% $NbF_5$ sample was not required. At n=1, the sample absorbed 3.11 wt% H for 2.5 min, 3.55 wt% H for 5 min, 3.86 wt% H for 10 min, and 4.23 wt% H for 30 min at 593K under 12 bar $H_2$. At n=1, the sample desorbed 0.17 wt% H for 5 min, 0.74 wt% H for 10 min, 2.03 wt% H for 30 min, and 2.81 wt% H for 60 min at 593K under 1.0 bar $H_2$. The XRD pattern of the 90 wt% Mg-10 wt% $NbF_5$ after reactive mechanical grinding showed Mg, ${\beta}-MgH_2$ and small amounts of ${\gamma}-MgH_2$, $NbH_2$, $MgF_2$ and $NbF_3$. The XRD pattern of the 90 wt% Mg-10 wt% $NbF_5$ dehydrided at n=3 revealed Mg, ${\beta}-MgH_2$, a small amount of MgO and very small amounts of $MgH_2$ and $NbH_2$. The 90 wt% Mg-10 wt% $NbF_5$ had a higher initial hydriding rate and a larger quantity of hydrogen absorbed for 60 min than the 90 wt% Mg-10 wt% MnO and the 90 wt% Mg-10 wt% $Fe_2O_3$, which were reported to have quite high hydriding rates and/or dehydriding rates. The 90 wt% Mg-10 wt% $NbF_5$ had a higher initial dehydriding rate (after an incubation period) and a larger quantity of hydrogen desorbed for 60 min than the 90 wt% Mg-10 wt% MnO and the 90 wt% Mg-10 wt% $Fe_2O_3$.

  • Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Extra Low Interstitial) alloy has been widely used as an alternative to bone due to its excellent biocompatibility. However, it still has many problems, including a high elastic modulus and toxicity. Therefore, nontoxic biomaterials with a low elastic modulus should be developed. However, the fabrication of a uniform coating is challenging. Moreover, the coating layer on Ti and Ti alloy substrates can be peeled off after implantation. To overcome these problems, it is necessary to produce bulk Ti and Ti alloy with hydroxyapatite (HA) composites. In this study, Ti, Nb, and Zr powders, which are biocompatible elements, were milled in a mixing machine (24h) and by planetary mechanical ball milling (1h, 4h, and 6h), respectively. Ti-35%Nb-7%Zr and Ti-35%Nb-7%Zr-10%HA composites were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at $1000^{\circ}C$ under 70MPa using mixed and milled powders. The effects of HA addition and milling time on the biocompatibility and physical and mechanical properties of the Ti-35%Nb-7%Zr-(10%HA) alloys have been investigated. $Ti_2O$, CaO, $CaTiO_3$, and $Ti_xP_y$ phases were formed by chemical reaction during sintering. Vickers hardness of the sintered composites increases with increased milling time and by the addition of HA. The biocompatibilty of the HA added Ti-Nb-Zr alloys was improved, but the sintering ability was decreased.
