The main objective of this study is to investigate the turning and zig-zag maneuvering performance of the well-known naval surface combatant DTMB (David Taylor Model Basin) 5415 hull with URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) method. Numerical simulations of static drift tests have been performed by a commercial RANS solver based on a finite volume method (FVM) in an unsteady manner. The fluid flow is considered as 3-D, incompressible and fully turbulent. Hydrodynamic analyses have been carried out for a fixed Froude number 0.28. During the analyses, the free surface effects have been taken into account using VOF (Volume of Fluid) method and the hull is considered as fixed. First, the code has been validated with the available experimental data in literature. After validation, static drift, static rudder and drift and rudder tests have been simulated. The forces and moments acting on the hull have been computed with URANS approach. Numerical results have been applied to determine the hydrodynamic maneuvering coefficients, such as, velocity terms and rudder terms. The acceleration, angular velocity and cross-coupled terms have been taken from the available experimental data. A computer program has been developed to apply a fast maneuvering simulation technique. Abkowitz's non-linear mathematical model has been used to calculate the forces and moment acting on the hull during the maneuvering motion. Euler method on the other hand has been applied to solve the simultaneous differential equations. Turning and zig-zag maneuvering simulations have been carried out and the maneuvering characteristics have been determined and the numerical simulation results have been compared with the available data in literature. In addition, viscous effects have been investigated using Eulerian approach for several static drift cases.

The shock-induced combustion ramjet (shcramjet) is a hypersonic airbreathing propulsion concept which over-comes the drawbacks of the long, massive combustors present in the scramjet by using a standing oblique detonation wave (a coupled shock-combustion front) as a means of nearly instantaneous heat addition. A novel shcramjet combustor design that makes use of wedge-shaped flameholders to avoid detonation wave-wall interactions is proposed and analyzed with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations in this study. The laminar, two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a non-equilibrium hydrogen-air combustion model based on chemical kinetics are used to represent the physical system. The equations are solved with the WARP (window-allocatable resolver for propulsion) CFD code (see: Parent, B. and Sislian, J. P., “The Use of Domain Decomposition in Accelerating the Convergence of Quasihyperbolic Systems”, J. of Comp. Physics, Vol. 179, No. 1,2002, pages 140-169). The solver was validated with experimental results found in the literature. A series of steady-state numerical simulations was conducted using WARP and it was deter-mined by means of thrust potential calculations that this combustor design is a viable one for shcramjet propulsion: assuming a shcramjet flight Mach number of twelve at an altitude of 36,000 m, the geometrical dimensions used for the combustor give rise to an operational range for combustor inlet Mach numbers between six and eight. Different shcramjet flight Mach numbers would require different combustor dimensions and hence a variable geometry system in or-der to be viable.

The flow pattern of air layers and skin-friction drag reduction by air injection are investigated to find the suitable multiphase flow model using unstructured finite-volume CFD solver for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. In the present computations, two different multiphase flow modeling approaches, such as the Volume of Fluid (VOF) and the Eulerian Multi-Phase (EMP), are adopted to investigate their performances in resolving the two-phase flow pattern and in estimating the frictional drag reduction. First of all, the formation pattern of air layers generated by air injection through a circular opening on the bottom of a flat plate are investigated. These results are then compared with those of MMkiharju's experimental results. Subsequently, the quantitative ratios of skin-friction drag reduction including the behavior of air layers, within turbulent boundary layers in large scale and at high Reynolds number conditions, are investigated under the same conditions as the model test that has been conducted in the US Navy's William B. Morgan Large Cavitation Channel (LCC). From these results, it is found that both VOF and EMP models have similar capability and accuracy in capturing the topology of ventilated air cavities so called'air pockets and branches'. However, EMP model is more favorable in predicting quantitatively the percentage of frictional drag reduction by air injection.

Marine accidents involving fishing boats, caused by a loss of stability, have been increasing over the last decade. One of the main reasons for these accidents is a sudden wind attacks. In this regard, the wind loads acting on the ship hull need to be estimated accurately for safety assessments of the motion and maneuverability of the ship. Therefore, this study aims to develop a computational model for the inlet boundary condition and to numerically estimate the wind load acting on a fishing boat. In particular, wind loads acting on a fishing boat at the wind speed profile boundary condition were compared with the numerical results obtained under uniform wind speed. The wind loads were estimated at intervals of 15° over the range of 0° to 180°, and i.e., a total of 13 cases. Furthermore, a numerical mesh model was developed based on the results of the mesh dependency test. The numerical analysis was performed using the RANS-based commercial solver STAR-CCM+ (ver. 13.06) with the k-ω turbulent model in the steady state. The wind loads for surge, sway, and heave motions were reduced by 39.5 %, 41.6 %, and 46.1 % and roll, pitch, and yaw motions were 48.2 %, 50.6 %, and 36.5 %, respectively, as compared with the values under uniform wind speed. It was confirmed that the developed inlet boundary condition describing the wind speed gradient with respect to height features higher accuracy than the boundary condition of uniform wind speed. The insights obtained in this study can be useful for the development of a numerical computation method for ships.
It has been noted that an accurate estimation of wind loads on offshore structures such as an FLNG (Liquefied Natural Gas Floating P roduction Storage Offloading Units, LNG FPSOs) with a large topside plays an important role in the safety design of hull and mooring system. Therefore, the present study aims to develop a computational model for estimating the wind load acting on an FLNG. In particular, it is the sequel to the previous research by the author. The numerical computation model in the present study was modified based on the previous research. Numerical analysis for estimating wind loads was performed in two conditions for an interval of wind direction (α), 15° over the range of 0° to 360°. One condition is uniform wind speed and the other is the NPD model reflecting the wind speed profile. At first, the effect of sand-grain roughness on the speed profile of the NPD model was studied. Based on the developed NPD model, mesh convergence tests were carried out for 3 wind headings, i.e. head, quartering, and beam. Finally, wind loads on 6-degrees of freedom were numerically estimated and compared by two boundary conditions, uniform speed, and the NPD model. In the present study, a commercial RANS-based viscous solver, STAR-CCM+ (ver. 17.02) was adopted. In summary, wind loads in surge and yaw from the wind speed profile boundary condition were increased by 20.35% and 34.27% at most. Particularly, the interval mean of sway (45° < α <135°, 225° < α < 315°) and roll (60° < α < 135°, 225° < α < 270°) increased by 15.60% and 10.89% against the uniform wind speed (10m/s) boundary condition.

There is a growing interest this paper for ocean sensing where autonomous vehicles can play an essential role in assisting engineers, researchers, and scientists with environmental monitoring and collecting oceanographic data. This study was conducted to develop a rigid sail for the autonomous sailing drone. Our study aims to numerically analyze the aerodynamic characteristics of curvy twin sail and compare it with wing sail. Because racing regulations limit the sail shape, only the two-dimensional geometry (2D) was open for an optimization. Therefore, the first objective was to identify the aerodynamic performance of such curvy twin sails. The secondary objective was to estimate the effect of the sail's spacing and shapes. A viscous Navier-Stokes flow solver was used for the numerical aerodynamic analysis. The 2D aerodynamic investigation is a preliminary evaluation. The results indicated that the curvy twin sail designs have improved lift, drag, and driving force coefficient compared to the wing sails. The spacing between the port and starboard sails of curvy twin sail was an important parameter. The spacing is 0.035 L, 0.07 L, and 0.14 L shows the lift coefficient reduction because of dramatically stall effect, while flow separation is improved with spacing is 0.21 L, 0.28 L, and 0.35 L. Significantly, the spacing 0.28 L shows the maximum high pressure at the lower area and the small low pressure area at leading edges. Therefore, the highest lift was generated.

In this study, the thrust generation by simultaneous flapping airfoils in tandem configuration is parametrically studied with respect to flapping frequency, amplitude and relative location. Navier-Stokes solver with overset grid topology is employed to calculate the unsteady flowfields. The computation results indicate that when the two airfoils stroke in-phase - flapping phase lag is zero - the maximum propulsive efficiency and thrust can be obtained for most frequency and amplitude range. At a flapping amplitude of 0.2 chord and a reduced frequency of 0.75, the propulsive efficiency of aft airfoil is enhanced by about 37 % compared with that of forward airfoil. However, if flapping frequency exceeds some critical value, the strength of the leading edge vortex of aft airfoil is fortified by the trailing edge vortex of the forward airfoil, resulting in poor propulsive efficiency. It is also found that out-of-phase flapping has relatively low propulsive efficiency and thrust since vortical wake of the forward airfoil interacts with the leading edge vortex of aft airfoil in the unfavorable fashion. The total thrust and propulsive efficiency are shown to decrease with the horizontal miss distance of the aft airfoil. On the contrary, the vertical miss distance has little effect on the overall aerodynamic performance.

OLAFOAM is the powerful CFD code and is an expanded version of $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$, for wave mechanics simulation. The $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ does provide many solvers to correspond to each object of the numerical calculation in a variety of fields. OLAFOAM's governing equation bases on VARANS (Volume-Averaged Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) equation, and the finite volume method is applied to numerical techniques. The program is coded in C++ and run on the Linux operating system. First of all, in this study, OLAFOAM was validated for 1) wave transformation inside porous structure under bore and regular wave conditions, 2) wave transformation by submerged breakwater under regular wave condition, and 3) regular wave transformation and resultant vertical velocity distribution under current by comparison with existing laboratory measurements. Hereafter, this study, which is almost no examination carried out until now, analyzed closely variation characteristics of water surface level, wave height, frequency spectrum, breaking waves, averaged velocity and turbulent kinetic energy around porous submerged breakwater in the wave and current coexisting field for the case of permeable or impermeable rear beach. It was revealed that the wave height fluctuation according to current direction(following or opposing) was closely related to the turbulent kinetic energy, and others.
The major objective of this study was to develop further understanding of 3D nearshore hydrodynamics under a variety of wave and tidal forcing conditions. The main tool used was a comprehensive 3D numerical model - combining the flow module of Delft3D with the WAVE solver of XBeach - of nearshore hydro- and morphodynamics that can simulate flow, sediment transport, and morphological evolution. Surf-swash zone hydrodynamics were modeled using the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, combined with various turbulence models (${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$, ${\kappa}-L$, ATM and H-LES). Sediment transport and resulting foreshore profile changes were approximated using different sediment transport relations that consider both bed- and suspended-load transport of non-cohesive sediments. The numerical set-up was tested against field data, with good agreement found. Different numerical experiments under a range of bed characteristics and incident wave and tidal conditions were run to test the model's capability to reproduce 3D flow, wave propagation, sediment transport and morphodynamics in the nearshore at the field scale. The results were interpreted according to existing understanding of surf and swash zone processes. Our numerical experiments confirm that the angle between the crest line of the approaching wave and the shoreline defines the direction and strength of the longshore current, while the longshore current velocity varies across the nearshore zone. The model simulates the undertow, hydraulic cell and rip-current patterns generated by radiation stresses and longshore variability in wave heights. Numerical results show that a non-uniform seabed is crucial for generation of rip currents in the nearshore (when bed slope is uniform, rips are not generated). Increasing the wave height increases the peaks of eddy viscosity and TKE (turbulent kinetic energy), while increasing the tidal amplitude reduces these peaks. Wave and tide interaction has most striking effects on the foreshore profile with the formation of the intertidal bar. High values of eddy viscosity, TKE and wave set-up are spread offshore for coarser grain sizes. Beach profile steepness modifies the nearshore circulation pattern, significantly enhancing the vertical component of the flow. The local recirculation within the longshore current in the inshore region causes a transient offshore shift and strengthening of the longshore current. Overall, the analysis shows that, with reasonable hypotheses, it is possible to simulate the nearshore hydrodynamics subjected to oceanic forcing, consistent with existing understanding of this area. Part II of this work presents 3D nearshore morphodynamics induced by the tides and waves.
