The present study is aimed to investigate flow characteristics of two-dimensional backward-fac-ing step by numerical approach. A convection conservation difference scheme based upon SOLA algorithm is used for the solution of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to simulate the laminar transitional and trubulent flow conditions at which the experimental data can be available for the backlward-facing step. The twenty kinds of reynolds number are used for the calculations. In an effort to demonstrate that the reported solutions are dependent on the mesh refinement computations are performed on seven different meshes of uniformly increasing refinement. also to investigate the result of inflow dependence two kinds of the inflow profile are chosen for the laminar flow. Irregular grid is adopted to minimize the errors on the satis-faction fo the discretized continuity. As criterion of benchmarking the result of numerical simula-tion reattachment lengthis used for the selected Reynolds numbers. The results of the present study prove the fact that the numerical predictions agree well with the experimental data and the flow characteristics are shown at the backward-facing step.

An implicit approach is employed to obtain a general boundary integral formulation of axisymmetric elastic problems in terms of a pair of singular integral equations. The corresponding kernel functions from the solutions of Navier's equation are derived by applying a three dimensional integral and a direct axisymmetrical approach. A numerical discretization schem including the evaluation of Cauchy principal values of the singular integral is described. Finally the typical axisymmetric elastic models are analyzed, i.e. the hollow sphere, the constant thickness and the V-notched round bar.

This paper investigates the convergence characteristics of the modified artificial compressibility method proposed by Turkel. In particular, a focus is mode on the convergence characteristics due to variation of the preconditioning factor (${\alpha}_u$) and the artificial compressibility (${\beta}$) in conjunction with an upwind method. For the investigations, a code using the modified artificial compressibility is developed. The code solves the axisymmetric incompressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The cell-centered finite volume method is used in conjunction with Roe's approximate Riemann solver for the inviscid flux, and the central difference discretization is used for the viscous flux. Time marching is accomplished by the approximated factorization-alternate direction implicit method. In addition, Menter's k-${\omega}$ shear stress transport turbulence model is adopted for analysis of turbulent flows. Inviscid, laminar, and turbulent flows are solved to investigate the accuracy of solutions and convergence behavior in the modified artificial compressibility method. The possible reason for loss of robustness of the modified artificial compressibility method with ${\alpha}_u$ >1.0 is given.
The propagation of pump-induced pressure pulsation in a reactor is important because of the potential for vibration and resultant damage of reactor internals. A hydrodynamic model has been developed to obtain the pressure fluctuation due to the operation of pumps in the annulus(between the core support barrel and reactor vessel of a pressurized water reactor) including the coolant inlet pipe. The mathematical analysis is formulated in accordance with the linearized Navier-Stokes equation by assuming a compressible, inviscid flow. Two regions are considered separately and by coupling the solutions of the inlet pipe and the annulus, the inlet nozzle pressure(pressure at pipe and annulus interface) is to be calculated without assumptions. The geometric parameter effect on the pump-induced pressure pulsation is evaluated. Comparison of predicted and measured inlet nozzle pressure values for each forcing frequency shows good order of magnitude agreement.

This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) integrated numerical model where the wave-induced pore pressures in a porous seabed around breakwater heads were investigated. Unlike previous research, the Navier-Stokes equation is solved with internal wave generation for the flow model, while Biot's dynamic seabed behaviour is considered in the seabed model. With the present model, a parametric study was conducted to examine the effects of wave and soil characteristics and breakwater configuration on the wave-induced pore pressure around breakwater heads. Based on numerical examples, it was found that the wave-induced pore pressures at breakwater heads are greater than that beneath a breakwater. The wave-induced seabed response around breakwater heads become more important with: (i) a longer wave period; (ii) a seabed with higher permeability and degree of saturation; and (iii) larger angle between the incident waves and breakwater. Furthermore, the relative difference of wave-induced pore pressure between fully-dynamic and quasi-static solutions are larger at breakwater heads than that beneath a breakwater.

An unsteady numerical simulation method for an autorotating rotor in forward flight was developed. The flapping and rotational equations of motion of autorotation are continuously integrated for given time steps, meanwhile the induced velocity field at disc plane is obtained by the dynamic inflow theory embodying the unteadiness. The transitions from arbitrary initial states to equilibrium states were simulated. Steady autorotations as numerical solutions of equations were predicted by using two sources of blade airfoil data. The simulations using airfoil data which were obtained by a two dimensional Navier-Stokes solver in terms of angles of attack and Reynolds numbers have shown good agreements with wind tunnel experimental results.

In order to estimate the efficiency of an evaporative heat exchanger having mini channel, the equations to calculate heat exchanger properties, those are air temperatures and water temperatures etc, are derived from the governing equations based on the Navier-Stokes equation, even though there are several assumptions to make problem simplify. There are three heat transfer zones at the mini channel heat exchanger depending on the water condition. So, there are three governing equations and solutions to calculate the properties. As the results of this study, the equations to calculate a saturation point and a dry point are derived to evaluate an evaporative heat exchanger having micro channel. It is supposed to predict and evaluate the performance of a mini channel heat exchanger with evaporation of liquid.
In this paper, static and vibration analysis for anti-symmetric cross-ply and angle- ply carbon/glass hybrid laminates rectangular composite plate are presented. In this analysis, the equations of motion for simply supported thick laminated hybrid rectangular plates are derived and obtained through the use of Hamilton's principle. The closed-form solutions of anti-symmetric cross-ply and angle- ply laminates are obtained using Navier solution. The effects of side-to-thickness ratio, aspect ratio, and lamination schemes on the fundamental frequencies loads are investigated. The study concludes that shear deformation laminate theories accurately predict the behavior of composite laminates, whereas the classical laminate theory over predicts natural frequencies. The excellent accuracy of the present analytical solution is confirmed by making some comparisons of the present results with those available in the literature. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the free vibration behaviors of anti-symmetric cross-ply and angle- ply hybrid laminated composite plates.

This manuscript illustrates the dynamic response of nanoscale carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in an elastic media under moving load using doublet mechanics theory, which not considered before. CNTs are modelled by Timoshenko beam theory (TBT) and a bottom to up modelling nano-mechanics is simulated by doublet mechanics theory to capture the size effect of CNTs. To explore the influence of the CNTs configurations on the dynamic behaviour, both armchair and zigzag configurations are considered. The governing equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions are obtained using the Hamiltonian principle. The Navier solution methodology is applied to obtain the solutions for both orientations. Free vibration and forced response under moving loads are considered. The accuracy of the developed procedure is verified by comparing the obtained results with available previous algorithms and good agreement is observed. Parametric studies are conducted to demonstrate effects of doublet length scale, CNTs configurations, moving load velocities as well as the elastic media parameters on the dynamic behaviours of CNTs. The developed procedure is supportive in the design and manufacturing of MEMS/NEMS made from CNTs.

The objective of this study is to simulate the flow in pipes with various boundary conditions. Free-pressure fluid model, is used in the pipe based on Navier-Stokes equation. The models are solved by using the numerical method. A problem called "stability of pipes" is used in order to compare frequency and critical fluid velocity. When the initial conditions of problem satisfied the instability conditions, the free-pressure model could accurately predict discontinuities in the solution field. Employing nonlinear strains-displacements, stress-strain energy method the governing equations were derived using Hamilton's principal. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is used for obtaining the frequency and critical fluid velocity. The results of this paper are analyzed by hyperbolic numerical method. Results show that the level of numerical diffusion in the solution field and the range of well-posedness are two important criteria for selecting the two-fluid models. The solutions for predicting the flow variables is approximately equal to the two-pressure model 2. Therefore, the predicted pressure changes profile in the two-pressure model is more consistent with actual physics. Therefore, in numerical modeling of gas-liquid two-phase flows in the vertical pipe, the present model can be applied.
