  • An integrated computing system has been developed for a Navier-Stokes design procedure of an axial-flow compressor blades. The process is done on the four separate steps, i.e., determination of the basic profiles, generation of computational grids, cascade flow simulation and analysis of the computed results in design sense. Applications are made to the blade design of the LP compressor. Computational results are analyzed with respect to the flow-field characteristics and are compared with the expected design requirements. The present system are coupled with the design procedure of the turbomachinery blades using the Navier-Stokes technique.

Mechanical buckling of functionally graded plates using a refined higher-order shear and normal deformation plate theory

  • Mechanical buckling of a rectangular functionally graded plate is obtained in the current paper using a refined higher-order shear and normal deformation theory. The impact of transverse normal strain is considered. The material properties are microscopically inhomogeneous and vary continuously based on a power law form in spatial direction. Navier's procedure is applied to examine the mechanical buckling behavior of a simply supported FG plate. The mechanical critical buckling subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression loads are determined. The numerical investigation are compared with the numerical results in the literature. The influences of geometric parameters, power law index and different loading conditions on the critical buckling are studied.

  • We study the incomprssible Navier Stokes equations for the flow inside contraction geometry. The governing equations are expressed in the vorticity-stream function formulations. A rectangular computational domain is arised by elliptic grid generation technique. The numerical solution is based on a technique of automatic numerical generation of acurvilinear coordinate system by transforming the governing equation into computational plane. The transformed equations are approximated using central differences and solved simultaneously by successive over relaxation iteration. The time dependent of the vorticity equation solved by using explicit marching procedure. We will apply the technique on several irregular-shapes.

  • An iterative time marching procedure for solving incompressible internal flow has been applied to the flow around a rotor-stator. This procedure solves three-dimensional incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation on a moving, time-deforming, non-orthogonal body-fitted grid using second-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives and third/second-order accurate schemes for the spatial derivatives. To handle rotationg geometry, the multiblock technique is applied and the overall flow domain is subdivided into two blocks. In each block, a grid is generated and flowfield is solved independently of the other blocks. The boundary data for each block is provided by the neighboring blocks using bilinear interpolation technique.

  • The numerical procedure has been developed for simulating incompressible viscous flow around a turbine stage with rotor-stator interaction. This study solves 2-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. The Marker-and-Cell concept is applied to efficiently solve continuity equation. To impose an accurate boundary condition, O-H multiblocked grid system is generated. O-type grid and H-type grid is generated near and outer rotor-stator The cubic-spline interpolation is applied to handle a relative motion of a rotor to the stator. Turbulent flows have been modeled by the Baldwin- Lomax turbulent model. To validate present procedure, the time averaged pressure coefficients around the rotor and stator are compared with experiment and a good agreement obtained.

  • Since the previous cut-and-try design algorithm require much cost and time, it has recently been concerned the automatic design technique using the CFD and optimum design algorithm. In this study, the Navier-Stokes equations is solved to consider the more detail viscous flow informations of cascade interaction and O-H multiblock grid system is generated to impose an accurate boundary condition. The cubic-spline interpolation is applied to handle a relative motion of a rotor to the stator. To validate present procedure, the time averaged aerodynamic loads are compared with experiment and good agreement obtained. Once the N-S equations have been solved, the computed aerodynamic loads may be used to computed the sensitivities of the aerodynamic objective function.   • This paper presents incompressible Navier-Stokes solution algorithm for 2D Free-surface flow problems on the Cartesian mesh, which was implemented to run on Graphics Processing Units(GPU). The INS solver utilizes the variable arrangement on the Cartesian mesh, Finite Volume discretization along Constrained Interpolation Profile-Conservative Semi-Lagrangian(CIP-CSL). Solution procedure of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for free-surface flow takes considerable amount of computation time and memory space even in modern multi-core computing architecture based on Central Processing Units(CPUs). By the recent development of computer architecture technology, Graphics Processing Unit(GPU)'s scientific computing performance outperforms that of CPU's. This paper focus on the utilization of GPU's high performance computing capability, and presents an efficient solution algorithm for free surface flow simulation. The performance of the GPU implementations with double precision accuracy is compared to that of the CPU code using an representative free-surface flow problem, namely. dam-break problem.

  • In this paper a method for analysing aerodynamic characteristics of a rotating parachute in steady descending motion is presented. Because of a complex geometric configuration of the parachute associated with side vents and discontinuous skirts, special procedure was adopted th handle the geometry in the analysis. A panel method was successfully applied to the present problem and yielded good results using above procedure. A CFD code using the full Navier-Stokes equations was also applied and provided good results. Parachute free drop and wind tunnel tests were performed to determine the fully developed canopy configuration and aerodynamic characteristics. The method can be used for optimizing the parachute size and side vent configurations in the design period.
