  • Even though the importance of the nature of science (NOS) and scientific inquiry in science learning have been emphasized by many science educators and science curriculums, the link between the NOS and scientific inquiry has not been discussed sufficiently. In this article, I discussed that various aspects of NOS are already embedded in defining and characterizing the authentic scientific inquiry and that we need to have special concern about how the NOS should be treated and interpreted when introducing it into scientific inquiry. And I summarized two approaches to teach the NOS and scientific inquiry; teaching the NOS through scientific inquiry and teaching scientific inquiry through the NOS. Finally, some next studies based on this article are introduced.

  • An assessment instrument dealing with secondary students' views on the nature of science was developed in this study. The features in aspects of the nature of science are generally accepted as characterizing the scientific enterprise and we have focused on are: 1) the purposes of the scientific enterprise, 2) the nature of scientific enquiry, 3) the nature and status of scientific knowledge, and 4) the nature and functioning of the scientific community. The questionnaire is made of three sections; that is, "Scientific Question", "Experiment", and "Belief". The Scientific Questions probe was designed to examine the ways in which learners mark out science as a particular domain, and particularly the types of questions that they think are open to scientific investigation. The Experiment probe was designed to throw light on the ways in which learners may think about theories and their relationship to evidence in a range of contexts. A related aim concerns the sorts of activities that learners consider to be experiments, and their reasons for this. The Belief probe was designed to see whether students are able to articulate the grounds for their acceptance of a proposition and, if they are, to explore the nature of these grounds. The reliability of the instrument developed in this study was found to be 0.86.

  • In the study, we suggest that the activation plan of the public nature burial in the capital area through funeral information system as follows. First, according to the report on the social survey announced by the National Statistical Office in December 2017, the Korean people's preference of nature burial was 43.6% while the actual utilization rate of national nature burial in 2017 was only 8.8%, which showed a huge gap between preference and utilization rate of nature burial. Therefore, through the activities to improve the awareness of nature burial by performing the national promotion and education, and also the investment for the expansion or improvement of nature burial facilities in the level of central government and local government, the preference of nature burial should be led to the actual demand. Second, during the period from 2011 to 2018, the utilization rate of public nature burial in the capital area was annually increased by average 26.9%, which showed the huge increase of demand for nature burial. Thus, each local government should carry forward the policies for expanding the supply of public nature burial focusing on the woodland burial showing the high preference of users of public nature burial. Third, even though the public cremation facilities are installed or operated by local governments in the capital area, Seongnam City without the public cremation facilities should install the public nature burial for the enhancement of users convenience by providing the One Stop Total Funeral Service.

  • This paper suggests to bring the idea of social construction of nature or social nature discussed in social science including geography to geographical and environmental education for breaking traditional divide of people(or society) and nature. And this paper analyzed relationship between people and nature, meaning of environment and the concepts of social nature represented in the geography curriculum and textbook of England, Australia and Korea. Recently in terms of focusing disciplines or education on integration or convergence, introduction of social nature in teaching and learning geography and environment has an important implication. With rapid growth of capitalism, nature is constructed socially by the political, economical, social and cultural practice. Thus geography education reduces the distance between human geography and physical geography and needs to focus on exploring not just the relationship between people and nature but social construction of nature. Another implication of the introduction of social nature in teaching and learning geography and environment is that students can develop the relational sensitivity about the relationship people and nature or people and place.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of inquiry-based biology program of pre-service science teachers' perceptions on the nature of science and their affective domain of science. For the study, sixty-seven pre-service science teachers were sampled from students who enrolled in the 'Biology Laboratory', Spring semester, 2011. The experimental group taught by inquiry-based experiment and control group by observation-based experiment were composed. At the beginning and end of semester, pre- and post-tests on the nature of science and affective domain of science were administered. The average scores of experimental group were higher than those of control group in the post-test of the nature of science, but there were no significant differences between both groups (p>.05). For the post-test results of both groups' affective domain of science, the experimental group showed significantly higher scores than the control group in self-efficacy in science, importance of science, and importance of science for careers (p<.01). The inquiry-based biology program did not influence pre-service science teachers' perception on the nature of science, while it was effective for positive changes on pre-service science teachers' affective domain of science.

  • Recently, there are getting popular form generation-related design methodologies and scientific discourses about the nature of nature in the environmental design. The necessity of visual perception and cognitive research is growing in this respect. Accordingly, this study was designed to discuss environmental design and cognition in the ecological perspective. This study was intended to study the structural factors of cognitive ecological space. This study focused on the systematic principle of new environmental design based on cognitive ecological approaches and what kinds of design effects this design principle has on the human being in the long nm. The results are as follows. First, the results suggests that fractal pattern should be an alternative to design cognitive ecological space and new paradigm of architecture is based on the nature of nature and human sensibility. Accordingly, they have proposed that fractal design is more empirical and environment-friendly than rational linear design. Second, this study classified the variables of cognitive ecological space into nature, tradition, preference judgement, aesthetic value, and schema. Accordingly, such features as symbol, tradition, and nature restricted by modernistic ideology should be added to new paradigm-based environmental design. Third, accordingly, this study stresses that cognitive ecological environmental design doesn't include buildings of modernism and deconstruction and is based on new science of complexity.

  • We investigated the elementary students' epistemological views on the nature of scientific measurement. The Views About Scientific Measurement (Ibrahim, 2005) was administered to 117 sixth graders. The analyses of the results indicated that there was an inconsistency in their epistemological views depending on the contexts of the measurement. They also had some difficulties in understanding a distribution of the data, which is needed to understand the necessity of repeating measurements, choosing a best representative value, and comparing data sets. They were found to have some naive views on scientific measurement which influenced negatively for fostering modern epistemological views on the nature of scientific measurement. The results suggest that the nature of scientific measurement should be emphasized explicitly in the national curriculum, and an effective method which improves elementary students' epistemological views on the nature of scientific measurement also be developed.

  • Horticultural therapy is a complementary therapy by trained professionals utilizing plant and horticultural activities as media to pursue the positive change of clients, which resulting from stimuli of plant nature, activities, and interaction with other people. Outdoor horticultural activities provide clients with the opportunities of the contact to nature such as fresh air and sunlight as well as plants. But the importance of plant nature to client's health has not been fully acknowledged compared to that of therapist's role and activities in horticultural therapy in Korea. In horticultural therapy it is possible for client to participate on the various levels from passive viewing to active gardening according to the client's ability. Therefore it is necessary for horticultural therapists to consider the therapeutic factors of plant nature to maximize the therapeutic effect of horticultural therapy. The purpose of the research is to clarify the therapeutic factors in the contact of client with plant nature and to emphasize those importance in horticultural therapy. From the review of the experimental researches five therapeutic factors were revealed: Natural light, plant natural view, natural sound, aroma(volatile oils of plants), and plant itself. This paper raises the importance of outdoor activities in horticultural therapy and the necessity for severely handicapped clients to the contact with plant nature, though passively.
