  • In Cheon Won Gi Dae Ron(天元紀大論), Cheon(大) means Nature, Won(元) means sources, Gi(紀) is Gang Gi(綱紀) that means rules or regulations, so Cheon Won Gi(天元紀) means sources and rules of change that make Nature phenomenons. This volume treats of cause that weather change of Nature caused by, and its general rules, and presents fundamental notions and systems of measuring of 'Five elements' evolutions and Six kinds of natural factors(五運六氣)'. So named Cheon Won Gi Dae Ron(天元紀大論). This article of the research on the Cheon Won Gi Dae Ron(天元紀大論) can be divided into 3 chapters. Chapter 1 presents a theory that the principle of changes of creations' birth, groth and extinction is complished by sympathizing with Hyeong(形) of Ji(地) and Gi(氣) of Cheon(大) by rules of movement of O Un Yum Yang(五運陰陽). Chapter 2 presents theories that Tae Heo(太虛) makes Won Gi(元氣), and this Won Gi(元氣) makes the change of creations' birth, groth and extinction, and movement of O Un(五運) controls creation of nature. And treats of that 'excessive and short(太過不及)' that is made by a quality of Gi(氣) and ups and dons of Hyeong(形) controls weather of year. In Chapter 3, Cheon O Ji Yuk(天五地六) regard six and five as Yong(用). And A Cycle that movment that sympathizing with O Un(五運) and Yuk Gi(六氣) is Il Gi(一氣) as 30 years, and Il Ju(一周) as 60 years. And presents that O Un(五運) and Yuk Gi(六氣) that Gan Ji(干支) control.

  • The capital city of Himalayan Country Nepal, Kathmandu Valley is surrounded by consecutive high mountains, which limits the air distribution and mixing effects significantly. It in turn generates steady air flow pattern over a year except in monsoon season. The air shed in the Valley is easily trapped by the surrounded mountains and the inversion layer formulated as the cap. The $PM_{10}$ concentration was noticeably higher than the standard level (120 ${\mu}g/m^3$) in urban and suburban area of Kathmandu valley for all seasons except monsoon period. The Valley area experiences similar wind patterns (W, WWS, and S) for a year but the Easterly wind prevails only during the monsoon period. There was low and calm wind blows during the winter season. Because of this air flow structure, the air emission from various sources is accumulated within the valley air, high level of air pollution is frequently recorded with other air polluted cities over the world. In this Valley area, brick kilns are recognized as the major air pollution source followed by vehicles. Mostly Bull Trench Kiln (BKT), Hoffman Kiln and Vertical Shaft Brick Kiln (VSBK) are in operation for brick firing in Kathmandu valley where the fuels such as crushed coal, saw dust, and natural gas are used for processing bricks in this study. Tool for the Reduction and Assessment of Chemical and Other Environmental Impacts (TRACI) was used for screening and quantifying the potential impacts of air emission from firing fuels. The total Environmental Performance Score (EPS) was estimated and the EPS of coal was approximately 2.5 times higher than those of natural gas and saw dust. It is concluded that the crushed coal has more negative impact to the environment and human health than other fuel sources. Concerning the human health and environment point of view, alternative environment friendly firing fuel need to be used for brick industry in the kiln and the air pollution control devices also need to be applied for minimizing the air emissions from the kilns.

  • Several strains of spore-forming lacticacid bacteria were isolated from natural sources such as soils, cereals, and foods. The general morphological and physiological characteristics of the strain 6-4 were investigated nad compared with some other industrial strains. The effects of fructose-1,6-diphoshpate (FDP), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and pH on the lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) activity of the strain were studied, and the changes in LDH activity and spore formation under various cultural conditions were researched. The results were as follows. 1. This strain was identified to Bacillus coagulans Hammer and distributed widely in natural sources. 2. The strain strongly converted various fermentation substrates in to L(+)-lacticacid in anaerobic conditioins, and many spores that were of great advantages to the industrial application were formed easily in the aerobic condition. 3. The LDH activity of this strain was activated by FDP and inhibited by ATP. The optimal pH for the enzyme activity was 6.0-6.5. 4. In the anaerobic culture condifion, the large amount of glucose added in the medium increased the LDH activity, but the cells were not committed to sporulate. 5. When none or a very small amount of glucose (less than 0.5%) was added to culture medium in the aerobic condition, the LDH activity was decreased and many spore were produced with final pH higher than 8.5. 6. The additioin of large amount of glucose (more than 2.0%) in aerobic culture increased the LDH activity and inhibited strongly the spore formation with final pH lower than 6.0.

  • According to the results of the groundwater quality investigation about 230 holes all over the country, the groundwater which was in excess of standard grows larger every year and closed holes increased to 23,457 holes in 1997 from 15,724 holes in 1996. This is the major reasons that water quality contamination, shortage of water quantity, increasing of salinity and so on. There are 7 groundwater salinization sources which are condisered as most important on a regional level. And among theses the Cheju Island groundwater salinization sources are (1) halite solution, (2) natural saline groundwater, (3) sea-water intrusion. The method of taking an isotopes is one of research methods of the origin of groundwater salinization and is used in so many studies because it has very high confidence. $^{18O}O, ^2H, ^3H, ^{14}C$ and so on in an isotopes are frequently used in the method of them. Consequently on this study we analyzed major ions and $^3H$ in groundwater, sea-water and rain of the eastern part of cheju island known as contaminated site from long time ago to examine the origin of groundwater salinization. Relation ratios of the major ions versus chloride ion shows similar tendency to sea-water. This indicates that sea-water entered the groundwater layer. And amount of $^3H$ in holes of the land side is higher than of the sea side. Relation of chloride ion versus $^3$H indicates negative character. Therefore we can think that the reason of groundwater salinization of this part is natural saline groundwater and halite solution by relation.

  • This study was conducted in order to recommend forest-based wildlife protection areas in Chung-nam Province using several basic habitat conditions. The conditions used in this study were the forest patch size with the potential to keep wildlife animals safe, the distance from water sources, and the availability of food for wildlife. The fractal dimension index was also used to find the edge line dynamics, which can influence on habitat conditions for edge species. The natural conservation management indices including a forest map (indicating the level of forest age), a slope map, and an elevation map were used to find the forest patches with enough space for wildlife to live on. Water resources and their buffer areas were considered as factors to protect the space as an ecological corridor. Deciduous trees and trees mixed with deciduous trees and conifers were chosen to provide wildlife animals their food. In total, 525 forest patches were chosen and recommended for the wildlife protection area. Five of these forest patches were recommended as wildlife protection areas managed by the provincial government. The other 520 forest patches were recommended to protect local wildlife animals and be managed by each county or city. These forest patches were located around the Geum-buk and Geum-nam mountains, and the forest patches are important resources as habitats to keep wildlife in the area. An ecological network consists of these separate forest patches with the ecological integration. A fractal dimension index was used to divide forest patches into several categories in order to find how patches are shaped. The forest patches with longer edges or more irregular shapes have a much higher possibility of being inhabited by various types of edge species. Through comparison of the wildlife protection areas recommended in this study to the current wildlife protection areas, we recognized that the current wildlife protection areas need boundary adjustments in order for wildlife animals to survive by themselves with water sources and food.

  • The development projects distort the natural water circulation system and increase the non-point source pollution by changing the natural cover type. The low impact development (LID) techniques are considering as new development approach to decrease the ecological- and hydrological impacts from high imperviousness rate. The high imperviousness rate is because of the construction of building, parking lot and road for human activities. Knowing the basic characteristics of rood runoff can give the direction for setting up the water management strategy. The monitoring results show the pollutant EMCs of roof runoff are 3~13 times lower than EMCs of the road and parking lot. The pollutant sources from roof runoff are mainly from leafs, cigarette butts, atmospheric deposition and materials of the roof. The EMC is occurred around 15minutes later after starting runoff and more than 8 storm events are needed to have the average EMCs.

  • Color values of anthocyanins from seven natural food colorants, such as purple-fleshed sweet potato (PSP), red flower cabbage (RFC), red cabbage (RC), grape skin (GS), black rice (BR), egg plant (EP), and fig fruit (FF) were evaluated, resulting in the selection of four color sources with higher color values including PSP, RFC, RC and GS. The stabilities of anthocyanins from the selected colorant sources against metal ions, ascorbic acid, ultra-violet light, and heating were investigated. Anthocyanins from PSP and GS were degraded significantly by $Mn^{2+}$, while those from RFC and RC were degraded by $Cu^{2+}$. Asthocyanins from PSP were the most stable against the color-degrading factors, followed by RFC, RC, and GS in descending order.

  • This study was designed to develop, implement and evaluate a nutrition education program for elementary school children. Subjects consisted of 47 children in the 6th grade in Seoul, Korea. They received five sessions of nutrition education from June to July, 1999. Topics for nutrition education included function of nutrients, food sources of nutrients, balanced diet, meal planning, and adequate energy intake. Each session lasted 40 minutes. To evaluate program effectiveness, one group pretest-posttest design was used. Subjects were given a pretest and a posttest on nutrition knowledge, eating attitudes, eating behavior, and dietary intake. All data were statistically analyzed mainly using the paired t-test and $\chi$$^2$-test. There was a significant difference between pretest and posttest score on nutrition knowledge(p<0.001), subscales of nutrition knowledge including food sources of nutrients, function of nutrients, and balanced diet(p<0.001). These changes in nutrition knowledge were also shown both in boys(p<0.001) and in girls(p<0.001). Eating attitudes, subscales of eating attitudes, and eating behavior were not significantly changed after nutrition education, although some changes were observed in these variables. Dietary intakes were not significantly were not significantly changed after nutrition education for all subjects ; however, different patterns in dietary intakes were observed when examined by sex. There was an increase in nutrient intakes among boys, while there was a significant decrease in nutrient intakes among girls after program implementation. Especially, it was noted that girls had diets deficient in iron, calcium, and vitamin A, even after nutrition education. It was concluded that a five-week nutrition education program can improve nutrition knowledge or some dietary intake, but this might not be enough to induce changes in food attitudes, eating behavior or dietary intakes. It might be necessary to incorporate diverse approaches, targeting sub-groups of children, and follow-up in nutrition education for elementary school children. • The culture conditions for the enhanced mycelial of Clavicorona pyxidata DGUM 29005 were investigated. The optimal temperature and pH for the mycelial growth were $24^{\circ}C$ and 5.0, respectively. It was shown that trehalose was the best supplement of carbon sources in Czapek-Dox medium as a minimal medium for enhanced mycelial growth. In general, inorganic nitrogen sources were better than organic ones for mycelial growth. Calcium nitrate was the best out of the inorganic nitrogen test. The appropriate phosphorous and vitamin were $Na_2HPO_4$ and p-aminobenzoic acid, respectively. After the mycelial of C. pyxidata DGUM 29005 was cultivated at $24^{\circ}C$ for 20 days in MEM broth(pH 5.0), the specific activities of both exomycelial and endomycelial enzymes were determined. Among the exomycelial enzyme assayed, the specific activity of laccase was much higher than those of other enzymes. However, little or no enzyme activities of ${\alpha}$-amylase, chitinase, lipase and pretense were found.

  • This study investigated the effects of conjugated linoleic acid(CLA) on the fat deposition, triglyceride levels and the expression of stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1(SCD1) in the livers of male ICR mice that were fed with either soybean oil or beef tallow supplemented with CLA. Mice weighing $25{\sim}30$ g were divided into four groups; soybean oil(SBO), and SBO supplemented with 1% CLA(SBOC), beef tallow(BT) and BT supplemented with 1% CLA(BTC). Each group consisted of 10 mice that were fed the experimental diets for 4 weeks. The experimental diets consisted of 64% carbohydrate, 20% protein, and 16% fat in terms of their contributions to total calories. All other nutrients were identical in the diets. Triglyceride measurements were completed using a kit. Fatty acid compositions were analyzed in the liver using gas chromatography. The levels of SCD1 expression were analyzed by RT-PCR in the liver. No significant differences were found for food intake level, body weight and food efficiency among the experimental groups. However, the weights of epididymal fat pads and plasma triglyceride levels were significantly lower in SBOC and BTC(p<0.05) compared to the SBO and BT groups. These effects were similar in the CLA supplemented groups. The expression level of SCD1 gene and ${\Delta}9$ desaturase index were not significantly different, regardless of the fat used for CLA supplementation. Based on these results, addition of CLA showed decreasing effects on the fat depots weight and the concentration of triglyceride regardless of the fat sources. The SCD1 gene expression and ${\Delta}9$ desaturase index were not influenced by the types of fats with respect to the CLA effects.
