  • This is a study on a landscape planning along the street 1~4, which are gateways to Taegu city and an important scenery. Therefore, emphasis was given to provide a bright, clean and beautiful first impression to visitors and citizens. The area is being developed for education and athletic park. Plans to construct a fountain, pergolas and a pond were set up to complement the active and passive facilities to the existing a athletic facilities in the area. Since D part in the area have alkali soil (pH 8.1), soil amendment is necessary for successful growth of trees and ground covers. When the area is filled or added with new soil for soil amendment, it will be important to use fresh soil which can support plant growth. It will be ideal to use ground covers and shrubs on the existing retaining walls along the street for keeping natural vegetation and slope stability instead of further cutting and reconstruction. It is not reasonable in technical and economic sense to remove rocks of the slope for planting trees. In order to harmonize plant color distribute, tall needle and broad leaf trees in the background as a screen, flowering trees were arranged in groups at front, and annuals were mass-planted along the footway. Natural-form-trees will be planted because they not only serve as a greenbelt but also are more economics in maintenance than formative trees.

  • A conventional flame type gas combustion major portion of heat is transferred to the body by convection due to small radiant ability of the gas flame. Increasing the radiation component of heat flux in the combustion zone allows to augment the efficiency of gas utilization. Such effect can be reached by using radiative gas burner applied to metal mesh combustion. Basically the gas radiant burner consists of metallic mesh of high heat resisting steels. In terms of this regards, we have made the burner consisted of metal mesh and measured the radiative flame stability of natural gas/air mixture on the metal mesh burner. The pressure loss through the metal mesh is defined by pressure-velocity slope. The more increased the pressure-velocity slope of the metal mesh is, the wider the stable zone of radiave flame on the metal mesh burner is. And the augmentation of mixture flowrate through the metal mesh make narrow the permissible range of equivalence ratio.

  • The main cause of natural disaster in Korea is meteorological phenomenon, such as typhoon, heavy rain, storm, rainstorm, heavy snow, hailstorm, overflowing of sea and so on(including thunderstroke, blast, snow damage, freezing and earthquake), and among those disasters, heavy rain takes place most often, and it occupies 80% of total disaster Especially, disaster related to slope collapse (landslide, collapse of retaining wall, burying ect.) takes place every year due to meteorological cause such as localized heavy rain, which is getting stronger. (National Institute for Prevention Disaster, 2002, Meteorological Administration) Accordingly, it is necessary to analyze the features of slope collapse related to natural disaster in Korea, and also to make up counterplan to prevent disaster. This paper will try to analyze potential areas which are susceptible to landslide regarding factors inducing landslide and heavy rain, and to evaluate the potentiality of landslide regarding local particularity of rainfall, furthermore to provide essential information for development of community such as preventing damages from landslide, construction Industry, and effective use of land.

  • Recently, landslides have frequently occurred on natural slopes during periods of intense rainfall. With a rapidly increasing population on or near steep terrain in Korea, landslides have become one of the most significant natural hazards. Thus, it is necessary to protect people from landslides and to minimize the damage of houses, roads and other facilities. To accomplish this goal, many landslide prediction methods have been developed in the world. In this study, a simple landslide prediction system that enables people to escape the endangered area is introduced. The system is focused to debris flows which happen frequently during periods of intense rainfall. The system is based on the wireless sensor network (WSN) that is composed of sensor nodes, gateway, and server system. Sensor nodes and gateway are deployed with Microstrain G-Link system. Five wireless sensor nodes and gateway are installed at the man-made slope to detect landslide. It is found that the acceleration data of each sensor node can be obtained via wireless sensor networks. Additionally, thresholds to determine whether the slope will be stable or not are proposed using finite element analysis. It is expected that the landslide prediction system by wireless senor network can provide early warnings when landslides such as debris flow occurs.

  • Montane grassland at the summit of Mt. Soback, Korea, was studied to verify the relationships between environmental factors and vegetations on the different slopes. The contents of total nitrogen and excangeable cation and thickness of A-layer of soil in the east slope were greater and thicker than those of the northwest one. Two different community types were observed one, on the east slope, was a grass community and the other, on the northwest, was a grass community. Plant height and annual production of the forb community were taller and greater than those of the grass community. These differences might be correlated with the different of snow depth between two slopes caused by wind in witner. It is clear that the formation of the montane grassland at the study area is mainly caused by fire, wind and topography at the summit.

  • Buffer zone selection technique for natural purification of livestock wastewater within a small agricultural watershed was developed using Geographic Information Systems. The technique was applied to $4.12\;km^2$ watershed located in Gosan-myun, Ansung-gun which have 20 livestock farmhouses. As a necessary data for selecting process, feedlot site map, digital Elevation Model (DEM), stream network, soil and land use map were prepared. By using these data, wastewater moving-path tracing program from each feedlot to the stream was developed to get the basic topographic factors; average slope through the paths, distance to the nearest stream and watershed outlet. To identify the vulnerable feedlots for storm event, the grid-based storm runoff model (Kim, 1998; Kim et al., 1998) was adopted. The result helps to narrow down the suitable area of buffer zone, and finally by using subjective but persuasive conditions related to elevation, slope and land use, the suitable buffer zones were selected.

  • The objective of this study was to monitor the regenerated process of natural vegetation on the rear-slope of Jangheung multi-purpose dam using the recycling eco-revegetation technique. The monitoring plots were established in May 2004 and the plots were monitored in May 2004 and October 2005. Flora, plant community structures, naturally introduced plants, death rates were monitored. The change of flora after wood chip mulching decreased in family and species, but the influence of vine tree was extended. The urbanization index declined. Naturally introduced species and death ratios at the monitoring plot had a tendency to a higher increase in the deciduous broad-leaved forest.

  • In this study, an equation is proposed to estimate the limit velocity for lateral stable bed in a curved channel stream. The stable bed on lateral direction is satisfied when there is no more deformation occurs on the transverse bed slope and non-scouring condition in a bend. A theoretical equation for limit velocity is derived using a transverse bed slope model. So, the limit velocity has its theoretical background in the equilibrium of two forces, lateral shear force at the bed due to longitudinal flow and the corresponding lateral bed shear force. To verify the equation, data from four natural river channels were used. There is good agreement between the calculated values using this equation and the measured values. The corrections in equation was found to be correlated with the averaged particle Froude number.

  • Road development is considered an important factor in invasion and dispersion of ailen plants by damaging the natural ecosystems and connecting the detached landscapes into long tubular structures. In this study, vegetation survey was carried out according to the topographical characteristics of cut slope, fill slope, and flat land at the construction site in order to understand the effect of road developemt on the change of the floristic composition of ailen plants. Road developement projects caused a lot of changes in annual and biennial alien plants because of continuous disturbances. Changes in species composition of alien plants decreased in the cut slope. On the other hand, the ailen palnts of the fill slope increased. The increase or decrease alien plants on flat land were identified depending on where it occurred, and no major trend was found. The cause of these change was driven by unintentionally introduced alien plants. In particular, the cut slope with a high occurence of unintentional ailen plants should not be used as a source of high-risk alien plants such as ecosystem disturbances. Since the transplanted species were intentionally planted by the landscape plan, it was possible to identify colonies from early stages and spread to the nearby flat land. Therefore, in order to minimize the impact of road slope vegetation on the surrounding ecosystem during and after road construction, it is suggested to plant high viability plants in the landscape design during the environmental impact assessment consultation.

  • Though the stability analysis of soil slopes widely employs the limit equilibrium method, the study on the jointed rock slopes must consider the direction of joint and the characteristics of Joint at the same time. This study analyzes the result of the change in the factors which show the characteristics of discontinuity and the shape factor of rock slopes, and so on, in an attempt to validate the propriety as to the interpretation of jointed rock slope stability which uses the general finite element program. First, the difference depending on the flow rules was compared, and the factor effect study was conducted. The selected independent variables included the direction of joint which displays the mechanical characteristics of discontinuity, adhesive cohesion, friction angle, the inclination and height of rock slope which reveal the shape of slope and surcharge load. And the horizontal displacement was numerically interpreted at the 1/3 point below the slope, a dependent variable, to compare the relative degree of factor effects. The findings of study on factor effects led to the validation that the result of horizontal displacement for each factor satisfied various engineering characteristics, making it possible to be applied to stability interpretation of jointed rock slope. A modelling is possible, which considers the application of the result of real geotechnical surveys & laboratory studies and the non-linear characteristics when designing the rock slope. In addition, the stress change which may result from the natural disaster, such as precipitation, and the construction, can be expressed. Furthermore, as the complicated rock condition and the ground supporting effect can be considered through FEM, it is considered to be very useful in making an engineering decision on the cut-slope, reinforcement and so on.
