  • Problems involved in the numerical analysis on the forced oscillation of nonlinear oscillators such a microbubble oscillation under ultrasound and Duffing oscillator were discussed. One of the problems is proper choice of the time scale of the driving force. which is related to the numerical artifacts due to the mismatch between the natural frequency of an oscillator(or bubble) and the characteristic frequency of the applied force. Such problem may occur in a nonlinear oscillator whose behavior is crucially dependent on the frequency of the applied force. The artificial resonance problem during the numerical evaluation of such nonlinear systems was also discussed.

  • Effects of rotary oscillation on unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder have been investigated in this study. Numerical simulations are performed for the flow at Re=100 in the range of 0.2<$\Omega$<2.5 and 0.02<$St_f$<0.8, where $\Omega$ and $St_f$ are, respectively, the maximum rotation velocity and rotation frequency normalized by the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter. Results show that rotary oscillation has significant effects on the flow. When the rotation frequency is near the natural vortex-shedding frequency, lock-on occurs and the lock-on frequency range becomes wider as the rotation velocity increases. In a certain range of the rotation frequency and velocity, modulations in the velocity, lift and drag signals occur and this modulation frequency is expressed as a linear combination of the rotation frequency and vortex-shedding frequency. The mean drag and amplitude of the lift fluctuations show local minima near the boundary between the lock-on non and lock-on regions.

  • Vortex lock-on or resonance in the flow behind a circular cylinder is visualized by a time-resolved PIV when a single frequency oscillation is superimposed on the mean incident velocity. Measurements are made of the $K{\'{a}}rm{\'{a}}n$ vortices in the wake-transition regime at the Reynolds number 360. Basically, natural shedding state is observed to compare with lock-on state. Wake motion by the change of the shedding frequency of lock-on state is investigated. When lock-on occurs, the vortex shedding frequency is found to be half the oscillation frequency as expected from previous experiments. The physical flow phenomena of natural shedding and lock-on states are analyzed with physical parameters of recirculation and vortex formation region. Consequently, it is found that the change of wake bubble plays an important role in the flow at the lock-on state. Vortex formation region is also actively changed like recirculation region as the lock-on occurs. Therefore, it is deduced that the recirculation region is closely related with the vortex formation region.

  • Numerical calculations are carried out for flow past a circular cylinder forced oscillating normal to the free-stream flow at a fixed Reynolds number equal to 185. The cylinder oscillation frequency ranged from 0.8 to 1.2 of the natural vortex-shedding frequency, and the oscillation amplitude extended up to 20% of the cylinder diameter. IBM (Immersed Boundary Method) with direct momentum forcing was adopted to handle both of a stationary and an oscillating cylinder Present results such as time histories of drag and lift coefficients for both stationary and oscillating cases are in good agreement with previous numerical and experimental results. The instantaneous wake patterns of oscillating cylinder with different oscillating frequency ratios showed the synchronized wakes pattern in the lock-in region and vortex switching phenomenon at higher frequency ratio than the critical frequency ratio.

  • The incompressible viscous flow past a sphere under forced oscillation is numerically investigated at a Reynolds number of 300. The immersed boundary method is used to handle the sphere oscillating vertically to the streamwise direction. There are two important variables to characterize the oscillating state of a sphere. One is an oscillating amplitude normalized by the sphere diameter is set as a fixed number of 0.2. Another is the frequency ratio which is defined by $f_e/f_o$, where fe and fo are the excited frequency and the natural frequency of vortex shedding for the stationary sphere. In this study, three different frequency ratios of 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 are considered. The results show a periodic flow with hairpin vortices shedding from upper and lower positions as well as vortical legs obliquely extended by oscillating motion of sphere. The enveloping vortical structure experience rupture twice in one period of oscillation. As the frequency of oscillation is increased, the vortical legs are getting shorter and eventually the hairpin vortices are much closer to the adjacent one.

  • A system for measuring and adjusting the oscillating frequency of a balance wheel whick determins the accuracy of mechanical timers. The balance wheel oscillates rotatively suspended by a hair spring which is welded at the other end to the pivot tube. The natural oscillatory frequency of the balance wheel is determined by the length of hairspring from the balance wheel to the point if other parameters the length in the torsional oscillation model are not changed, so the frequency of the balance wheel can be adjusted to meet a requirement by the adjustment of the hairspring length using ultrasonic welding. And the movement of wheel teeth is measured in realtime by a high speed photo fiber sensor and Auto Correlation is used to find a more accurate oscillation period from the measured signal with some variations.

  • The flow past a circular cylinder forced to vibrate transversely is numerically simulated by solving the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations modified by the vibration velocity of a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of 164. The higher-order finite difference scheme is employed for the spatial discretization along with the second order Adams-Bashforth and the first order backward-Euler time integration. The calculated cylinder vibration frequency is between 0.60 and 1.30 times of the natural vortex-shedding frequency. The calculated oscillation amplitude extends to 25% of the cylinder diameter and in the case of the lock-in region it is 60%. It is made clear that the cylinder oscillation has influence on the wake pattern, the time histories of the drag and lift forces, power spectral density and phase diagrams, etc. It is found that these results include both the periodic (lock-in) and the quasi-periodic (non-lock-in) state. The vortex shedding frequency equals the driving frequency in the lock-in region but is independent in the non-lock-in region. The mean drag and the maximum lift coefficient increase with the increase of the forcing amplitude in the lock-in state. The lock-in boundaries are also established from the present direct numerical simulation.

  • Lock-on characteristics of flow around a circular cylinder oscillating rotationally with a relatively high forcing frequency have been investigated experimentally. Dominant governing parameters are Reynolds number (Re), angular amplitude of oscillation (${\theta}_A$), and frequency ratio $F_R=f_f/f_n,\;where\;f_f$ is a forcing frequency and $f_n$ is a natural frequency of vortex shedding. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of $Re=4.14{\times}10^3,\;{\pi}/90{\leq}{\theta_A}{\leq}{\pi}/3,\;and\;F_R=1.0$. The effect of this active flow control technique on the lock-on flow characteristics of the cylinder wake was evaluated with wake velocity measurements and spectral analysis of hot-wire signals. The rotational oscillation modifies the flow structure of near wake significantly. The lock-on phenomenon always occurs at $F_R=1.0$, regardless of the angular amplitude ${\theta}_A$. In addition, when the angular amplitude is less than a certain value, the lock-on characteristics appear only at $F_R=1.0$,. The range of lock-on phenomena expands and vortex formation length is decreased, as the angular amplitude increases. The rotational oscillation create a small-scale vortex structure in the region just near the cylinder surface. At ${\theta}_A=60^{\circ}$, the drag coefficient was reduced about $43.7\%$ at maximum.

  • Vortex lock-on or resonance in the flow behind a circular cylinder is investigated from a time-resolved PIV when a single frequency oscillation is superimposed on the mean incident velocity. Measurements are made of the $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ and streamwise vortices in the wake-transition regime at the Reynolds number 360. Streamwise vortices at the lock-on and natural shedding states are observed, as well as the changes in the wake region with the change of the shedding frequency of lock-on state. When lock-on occurs, the vortex shedding frequency is found to be half the oscillation frequency as expected from previous experiments. At the lock-on state, the $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ vortices are observed to be more disordered by the increased strength and spanwise wavelength of the streamwise vortices, which leads to a strong three-dimensional motion. Recirculation and vortex formation region at the lock-on state is reduced as the oscillating frequency is increased. By comparing the Reynolds stresses at the lock-on and natural shedding states, $\bar{u'u'}\;and \;\bar{u'u'}$ at the lock-on state are concentrated on the shear layer around the cylinder. The $\bar{u'u'}\;at\;f_o/f_n=2.0$ has a large value near the centerline, compared with that of other cases. Considering the traces of maximum of u', in the wake region near the cylinder, wake width at the lock-on state is wider than that at the natural shedding state.
