  • Threelectrodes systems were used in stripping voltammetry (SW) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) instead of the expensive platinum and Ag/AgCl reference electrodes. Moreover, the electrolyte solution was used with deep seawater, which can reduce water pollution, is more eco-friendly, and has a lower cost. The analytical optimum parameters measured via CV and SW and with working ranges were obtained from 10 to 80 ug/L using fluorine immobilized on a graphite pencil electrode (FE). Under the optimum conditions, the analytical detection limit of 6.30 ug/LAu was obtained. The results of the study can be applied to diagnostic assay for natural minerals and human finger tissue.

  • Asbestos is a commercial term of natural occurring silicated minerals and forms long, thin fibers. Chrysotile, the serpentine asbestos, accounts for most use in commercial use. Asbestos is well known health hazard material and it is proved that inhalation of asbestos fibers leads to increased risk of developing several diseases such as lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis. In these days, people most at risk for exposure are maintenance and construction workers and general citizens who are working on and close to the work area at which asbestos containing material is disturbing. Non asbestiform, though its chemical composition is same with regulated asbestos, is known to be less hazardous than asbestiform. Exposure guideline, 0.01 f/ml, is not safe level in terms of health risk. It is reasonable to take preventable action when asbestos is suspicious. In Korea, it is necessary to clarify the concept between hazard and risk, to differentiate asbestiform from non asbestiform, to make regulations for compensation for asbestos related patients, to manage future exposure for general citizens.

  • Electrolyzed reduced water was known as an alkaline solvent than piped water, natural water and mineral water etc. By means of reduction property, electrolyzed reduced water could dissolve a solute than other kinds of water without chemicals. In this study, serpentine dissolution in electrolyzed reduced water was investigated as a novel pre-treatment of serpentine which was a minerals for carbon dioxide sequestration. The elements (Ca, Si, Mg etc.) of serpentine were dissolved rapidly at early in the dissolvation then after some minutes the solubilities of serpentine elements showed stable state without abrupt changes. In spite of serpentine elements dissolution, chemical bondings and crystallographic structure of serpentine were not changed. It was explained that the dissolution mechanism of serpentine occurred from surface in electrolyzed reduced water and bulk structure sustained without collapse.

  • There are around 6700 millions tons of perlite reserves in the world. Although perlite possesses pozzolanic properties, it has not been so far used in soil stabilization. In this study, stabilization with perlite and lime of an expansive clayey soil containing smectite group clay minerals such as montmorillonite and nontronite was investigated experimentally. For this purpose, test mixtures were prepared with 8% of lime (optimum lime ratio of the soil) and without lime by adding 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% of perlite. Geotechnical properties such as compaction, Atterberg limits, swelling, unconfined compressive strength of the mixtures and changes of these properties depending on perlite ratio and time were determined. The test results show that stabilization of the soil with combination of perlite and lime improves the geotechnical properties better than those of perlite or lime alone. This experimental study unveils that the mixture containing 30% perlite and 8% lime is the optimum solution in stabilization of the soil with respect to strength.

  • Shape separation method - a separation process which utilizes the fact that particles of different shape behave differently in force fields- is regarded as an useful measure for recycling, mineral processing, upgrading powdered material and so on. In this study, a trial was given to shape separation method using fluid field to recover pure diatom skeleton - which is thought to have many uses in itself and potential for various applications -from low grade diatomaceous earth of southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The striking difference of shape between diatom skeleton and other minerals like clay and quartz made it natural to choose shape separation method. Considering the size of particles to be separated, among many possible methods of shape separation, hydrodynamic field using hydrocyclone was adopted. And it resulted in recovery of pure diatom skeleton with high purity

  • This research was carried out to evaluate the possible usage of natural clay materials collected from the Kimpo landfill site and nearby clay mines as a clay liner material. In order to evaluate the possible usage as a clay liner material, specific gravity, pH, loss-on-ignition, organic carbon content and mineralogical composition of clay materials were measured. The Atterberg limit test and the size analysis were performed for the engineering classification and the prediction of hydraulic conductivity of clay materials. Caution exchange capacity and batch tests were also carried out for the assessment of attenuation capacity. Clay specimens of KPNCL, KP-1, KP-2 and SH were recommended as suitable clay linder materials from viewpoint of their basic quality and attenuation capacity.

  • This study surveys the surface water environment in Southwest sea areas of Vietnam in order to evaluate the current environment. It collects and analyzes experimental results of programs, scientific subjects, and international projects relevant to ecological areas and coastlines of Kien Giang province. The methods analyzed and discussed by specialists are evaluated according to pollution coefficients established by the World Health Organization (WHO), sampling methods, and case study analyses. Comparison between the scale of pollution levels and the surface water quality in experimental areas of Long Xuyen Quadrangle shows a light-moderate pollution level. In Ca Mau Peninsula, the surface water source is only slightly polluted. Sea areas and islands are also light-moderately polluted. Computing results from water quality indices (WQI) show the level of pollution in experimental sites. Activities such as constructing infrastructures for tourism, exploiting minerals, and increasing population accelerate environmental pollution by deteriorating inherently sensitive ecosystems like corals, sea grass, mangrove swamps, and Melaleuca forests. Surveying and evaluating the present situation of surface water are fundamental solutions for environmental protection in the Southwest sea areas of Vietnam.

  • In order to explain the positive catalytic action of copper compound for the rate of leaching of zinc sulfide minerals, the electrode and redox potentials of both synthetic and natural sulfides were measured at various conditions of temperatures and pressures. The potentials of Chalcopyrite and copper sulfide were considerably higher than that of zinc sulfide, whereas lead sulfide and Galena had slightly lower potentials than that of zinc sulfide. At elevated temperatures and pressures, the same tendency was obtained. By means of comparing the calculated and measured values of potentials for sulfides, it was suggested that the electrode potentials in acid solution were generated by oxidation of sulfur ion. As a result, it was concluded that the catalytic action of copper compound in the leaching of synthetic zinc sulfide should be arised from the galvanic action between sulfides keeping intimate contact one another in which copper sulfide worked as cathodic and zinc sulfide as anodic part analogous to the metal corrosion under galvanic action.

  • the crystal structure of pale green gem-quality olivine from Bisbee mine,Arizona, (Mg1.83Fe0.18)Si0.99O4, a=4.7608(4)$\AA$, c=5.9903(6)$\AA$, c=5.9903(4)$\AA$, V=291.49(1)$\AA$, Pbnm, Z=4 has been refined by both single-crystal and Rietveld methods to R(%) indices of 2.20 and 9.07, respectively. Comparison of site occupancies, cell dimensions, atomic coordinations, and interatomic distances/angles obtained from both methods shows that the Rietveld method produces more accurate site scattering values, cell dimension, and atomic positions than the single-crystal method. This indicates that the Rietveld method is a useful technique for the structural characterization and crystal-chemical study of powdered samples of natural minerals and synthetic materials.
