Plasticity of Mating Calls in Hyla Japonica (Amphibia: Hylidae)

  • Hyla japonica males were observed to produce two distinctively different types of mating calls: advertisement call to attract conspecific females and encounter call to keep off potential competitor males. Whereas advertisement calls were organized in bouts of calls or notes, encounter calls were usually produced as separate calls. Encounter calls were much longer and had more pulses per call than advertisement calls. However dominant frequencies or pitches of the two calls did not differ significantly. Hyla Japonica males exhibited considerable plasticity in their calling behavior. They altered both qualitative and quantitative properties of their calls in response to other calling males. Sometimes, they even switched from producing advertisement calls to encounter calls. Advertisement calls produced by chorusing males were shorter in duration and thus move calls per bout than those produced by lone males. Males also produced much lower-pitched calls when calling together with other males. Considering that low pitch calls are often Highly correlated with body size, it is possible that H. japonica males may try to generate deceptive calls to indicate the size greater than the actual.

  • Fifty-one Thai Native (TN) and Anglo-Nubian (AN) $\times$ TN does were studied. The purpose of the study was to investigate the reproductive performances of different goat genotypes grazing improved pasture with or without supplementary feeding. The feeding regimes were: 1. no concentrate supplement (T1), 2. supplemented for 15 days before mating and 45 days during mating period (T2), 3. supplemented from 15 days before mating to 42 days after kidding (T3) and 4. supplemented for 30 days before kidding, followed by 42 days after kidding. Cross-bred does tended to have higher conception rates, kidding opportunities and higher multiple birth rates than TN does. However, these differences were not statistically significant (p>0.05), and concentrate supplementation under the various regimes did not increase reproductive performance. TN kids had significantly (p<0.01) lower birth weights and lower weights at 3, 6 and 12 weeks of age than those of the cross-bred kids. However, there was no significant difference between the genotypes in growth rate (g/d or $g/kg^{75}/d$) of kids during these periods. Supplementary feeding did not significantly affect either kid birth weight or weight gain in the first 6 weeks after birth and during this period supplementary adequate in both quantity and quality, substantial reproductive performances were achieved from both TN and AN $\times$ TN does without concentrate supplementation.

Life History of a Colonial Spider Philoponella prominens (Araneae: Uloboridae) in Korea

  • We report for the first time the life history of a 'social' spider, Philoponella prominens, living in a temperate region. Philoponella prominens hibernated as immatures or subadults for 7-8 months in 1995 and 1996 from September-October to April-May in central Korea. When they emerged from their winter hibernation, a majority began their lives as commensals in the webs of other species. As the mating season approached, however, commensal spiders switched to become colonial or solitary. The mating season began in early June and lasted until early August. Newly-hatched spiderlings began to appear in the field in late June. They formed a colony by building their webs connected to the mother's by using pan of the mother's web as supporting substrates. As the season progressed, however, some of the colonial spiderlings became commensal or solitary individuals. Our field observations suggest that Philoponella prominens form colonies or commensal associations to reduce the web-building cost.

성선자극홀몬 투여가 Angora토끼의 난소반응에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Gonadotropin Treatment on the Ovarian Response in the Angora Rabbits)

  • The present experiment was carried out to investigate super-ovulating response, ovulation time and fertilizability in the angora rabbit that gonadotropin was treated. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. Number of ovulating point and ovarian weight in PMSG 100I.U.(25${\pm}$2.45;1104.2${\pm}$110.6mg) and PMSG 200I.U.(30.6${\pm}$1.76, 1330.0${\pm}$153.9mg) treated group were significantly higher than natural mating(6.6${\pm}$1.49, 560.2${\pm}$60.6mg) and HCG treated group(9.8${\pm}$0.8;651.6${\pm}$55.1mg)(P<0.01). 2. Survival rate and recovery rate in natural mating, HCG and PMSG 100I.U. treated group were significantly higher than PMSG 200I.U. treated group.(P<0.01)(P<0.05). 3. Ovulation started at 10hrs and mostly finished at 16hrs after HCG injection. 4. The fertilizable life of egg ovulated was during 8hrs after ovulation.

Successful Birth of Pups Produced by GnRH-induced Estrus and Natural Mating in Captive Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)

  • On January 6, 2010, two months earlier than normal breeding season, a red fox vixen was implanted with synthetic GnRH analogue, Deslorelin. Blood was sampled every 2~3 days from the day of implant to identifying spermatozoa on stains of epithelial cells. Estradiol and progesterone were examined. Even though the vixen was in non-breeding season, she was mated by a male fox. Pregnancy was confirmed by canine pregnancy detection kit that detect relaxin released from placenta. Four healthy pups were born on March 9, 2010. This is the first report showing synthetic GnRH can activate ovarian function and lead to fertile estrus of red fox in non-breeding season.

  • 효모의 mating pheromone에 의한 세포내 Slgnal을 전달하는 물질을 coding 하거나 조절할 수 있는 유전자에 대한 정보를 얻기 위해서 효모에서 G-protein의 ${\alpha}-subunit$를 coding 하는 유전자 CDC70에 돌연변이가 얼어난 균주 $A14-3(MAT{\alpha},\;cdc70-5)$에 UV를 조사하여 돌연변이 cdc70-5를 억제할수 있는 또 다른 돌연변이를 획득하였다 . 돌연변이 cdc70-5의 표현형은 온도 감수성 (temperature sensitivity)이며, $38^{\circ}C$에서 배양하면 세포주기가 G1에서 정지되고 shmoo모양을 보인다 . 균주 A14-3에서 UV를 조사하였을 때 $38^{\circ}C$에서 colony를 형성할 수 있고 세포분열이 정상적으로 진행되어 출아를 하고 있다는 것은 새로운 돌연변이가 cdc70-5 의 표현형을 억제 한다는 사실을 의미한다 . 이러한 억제돌연변이 중 signal transducer와 직접적으로 관련이 없는 유전자들인 $sir^-$$mat{\alpha}2^-$ 돌연변이를 배제한 다음 선택된 15개의 돌연변이들를 중심으로 분석을 행하였다 . 어느 유전자에서 유발 되었는지 그리고 유전자 종류는 몇 가지나 되는지를 암기 위하여 tetrad analysis를 통해 연관여부를 조사하여 분리된 15개의 돌연변이중 12개는 4개의 연관군(sga1, sga2, sga3, sga4)에 속함을 알았다.

  • 복숭아순나방(Grapholita molesta)은 사과에 주요 해충이다. 이 해충을 환경친화형 방법으로 방제하기 위해 성페로몬을 이용한 교미교란제 처리 기술이 개발되고 있다. 광범위한 영역에 대한 교미교란제의 처리는 복숭아순나방 방제에 효과적이나 이러한 광범위영역에 대한 구체적 크기를 결정하는 방법은 알려지지 않았다. 이를 결정하기 위해서는 복숭아순나방의 교미행동 범위를 결정할 수 있는 방법이 개발되어야 하며, 이를 위해 복숭아순나방의 이동을 추적할 수 있는 분자지표의 개발이 필요하게 되었다. 본 연구는 RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) 기술을 이용하여 효과적인 두 개의 분자지표를 개발하였다. 상이한 지역과 시기에 따라 구분되는 야외 복숭아순나방 집단들에 대해서 이들 분자지표를 이용하여 집단 유전 분석이 실시되었다 이들 분자지표들은 특정지역에서 복숭아순나방 집단들이 시기적으로 유전적 조성에 뚜렷한 차이를 보여 주었다. 또한 서로 다른 지역의 복숭아순나방 집단들은 거리에 따라 상대적으로 차이가 증가하였지만, 계절이 진행함에 따라 그 차이가 감소하였다.

A Natural Hybrid of Intergeneric Mating between a Female Pungtungia herzi and a Male Pseudorasbora parva (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae)

  • A natural hybrid of a probable intergeneric mating between the striped shiner Pungtungia herzi and the stone morocco Pseudorasbora parva (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) was captured in the Geumho River, a tributary of the Nakdong River basin in Korea. Morphological characters and DNA sequences were analyzed to verify its hybrid state and identify the parentage of its parent species. The hybrid exhibited a phenotypic intermediacy between the two parent species in the number of vertebrae and the mouth shape. Out of 1,488 base pair (bp) positions of the nuclear recombination activating gene 1 gene (rag1), which has a biparental mode of inheritance, 41-bp substitutions were detected between the two parent species, whereas an electropherogram of the hybrid displayed polymorphic double peaks at all of the base positions, along with one additional one, strongly indicating its hybrid state. Meanwhile, sequence comparison of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (mt-cyb) (1,140 bp), which has a maternal mode of inheritance, showed only 5-22-bp differences (97.6-99.5% identities) between the hybrid and Pu. herzi, but as many as 158-168-bp differences (85.2-86.1% identities) between the hybrid and Ps. parva, clearly indicating Pu. herzi as the maternal species. Thus, combined analyses of independent data sets (i.e., morphology and nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences) offered convincing evidence for the hybrid state of a naturally occurring hybrid resulting from intergeneric mating between a female Pu. herzi and a male Ps. parva.

진도개에서 혈장 progesterone 농도측정에 의한 배란시기 및 교배적기의 추정 (Estimation of the time of ovulation and mating based on plasma progesterone concentrations in Korea Jin-do bitches)

  • The aim of this study was to assess the estimates of the time of ovulation and mating derived by plasma progesterone concentration. The 40 mature Korea Jin-do bitches were monitored to determine the plasma progesterone concentrations from proestrus to parturition. Gestation length in the 30 pregnant bitches was $63.9{\pm}2.3$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) days in multiparous bitches and $61.8{\pm}3.6$ days in primiparous bitches when Day 0 was timed from the first day of male acceptance, and $61.4{\pm}1.8$ days and $61.3{\pm}2.7$ days when Day 0 was timed from the day of first mating, respectively. Also, gestation length was $63.1{\pm}1.4$ days, $62.4{\pm}1.1$ days and $61.5{\pm}0.9$ days in multiparous bitches, and $62.6{\pm}1.4$ days, $62.4{\pm}2.0$ days and $61.6{\pm}2.3$ days in primiparous bitches when Day 0 was timed from the day that plasma progesterone concentration was first increased above 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0ng/ml, respectively, and $53.8{\pm}3.1$ days and $54.8{\pm}2.6$ days when Day 0 was timed from the last day of male acceptance, respectively. In 30 pregnant bitches, plasma progesterone concentration was $0.2{\pm}0.2ng/ml$ in multiparous bitches and $0.7{\pm}0.8ng/ml$ in primiparous bitches at the first day of vulval bleeding, $1.9{\pm}1.0$ and $3.3{\pm}2.7ng/ml$ at the first day of male acceptance, $7.0{\pm}4.0$ and $9.3{\pm}6.2ng/ml$ at the day of first mating, and $25.1{\pm}6.3$ and $22.8{\pm}10.3ng/ml$ at the last day of male acceptance, respectively. When Day 0 was timed from the day of parturition, plasma progesterone concentration at Day -62, Day -63 and Day -64 was $4.7{\pm}2.7ng/ml$, $3.5{\pm}2.2ng/ml$ and $1.7{\pm}0.9ng/ml$ in multiparous bitches, and $5.3{\pm}4.4ng/ml$, $3.2{\pm}3.7ng/ml$ and $2.0{\pm}1.9ng/ml$ in primiparous bitches, respectively. When Day 0 was timed from the day that plasma progesterone concentration was first increased above 3.0ng/ml after the first day of vulval bleeding, plasma progesterone concentration at Day 61 and Day 62 was $2.7{\pm}2.2ng/ml$ and $1.4{\pm}1.9ng/ml$ in multiparous bitches, and $3.4{\pm}5.2ng/ml$ and $3.7{\pm}5.6ng/ml$ in primiparous bitches, and $0.8{\pm}0.7ng/ml$ and $0.9{\pm}0.4ng/ml$ at Day 63, respectively. It was that bitches were mated when plasma progesterone concentraion was 1.9 to 14.2ng/ml and 3.5 to 20.0ng/ml in multiparous and primiparous bitches, which was between first day before ovulation and fourth day after ovulation. And pregnancy rate was 92% (23/25). From these data, ovulation was estimated to occur the day when plasma progesterone concentration was first increased above 3.0ng/ml after the first day of vulval bleeding. It was estimated that mating time was the day when plasma progesterone concentration was between 1.9 and 20.0ng/ml, and best time for mating was between 3.0 and 8.0ng/ml of plasma progesterone concentration.

종모돈의 정액성상과 번식성적에 미치는 품종, 연령, 계절, 산차 및 교배방법의 영향 (Effect of Breed, Age, Season, Parity and Mating Type on Boar Semen Characteristics and Fertilizing Capacity)

  • 본 연구는 1996년부터 1999년까지 다비 AI 센타에서 사육되는 종모돈 199두와 종빈돈 4,181두를 가지고 종모돈의 정액생산과 번식성적에 미치는 품종, 연령, 계절, 산차 및 교배방법의 영향을 구명하고자 실시한 바, 그 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같았다. 1. 정액량은 Landrace (L) 종이 266.8 $m\ell$로 제일 많았고, Yorkshire (Y) 종이 그 다음으로 많았으며, Duroc (D) 종이 제일 적었다. 정자 운동성은 품종간에 차이가 없었다. 정자농도는 Landrace 종이 4.7$\times$109 sperm/$m\ell$로 제일 낮았고, 정액량이 제일적은 Duroc 종이 5.7$\times$$10^{9}$ sperm/$m\ell$ 로 제일 높았다. 종모돈의 연령에 따른 정액량은 2세 때가 213.3 $m\ell$로 제일 많았고, 4, 3 그리고 l 세의 순서로 정액량이 감소하였다. 2. 종모돈의 계절에 따른 정액량은 겨울철이 228.6 $m\ell$로 제 일 많았고, 가을, 여름, 봄의 순서로 정액량이 감소하였다. 정자농도는 봄철이 5.9$\times$109 sperm/$m\ell$로 제일 높았으며, 여름, 겨울, 그리고 가을의 순서로 낮았다. 3. 교배방법에 따른 복당 생시체중은 품종간 처리구간에 차이점을 인정할 수 없었으나 복당 출생시 생존수에 있어서는 자연종부후 인공수정을 실시한 처리구에서 9.5두로 제일 많았으며, 인공수정을 실시한 처리구에서는 9.2두, 그리고 자연종부를 실시한 처리구에서는 8.9두로 처리구간에 유의성 (P<0.01)이 인정되었다. 4. 교배그룹간에서는 L (우)$\times$Y (♂) 교배조합과 L (♀)$\times$L (♂) 교배조합이 Y (♀)$\times$ L (♂) 교배조합 Y (♀)$\times$Y (♂) 교배조합보다 복당 생시체중이 무거웠으며, 복당 출생시 생존 자돈수에 있어서도 비슷한 경향을 나타내었다. 자연종부와 인공수정간에 복당 생시체중과 복당 출생시 생존자돈수는 유의차가 없었다. 5. 산차간에 있어서는 2~6 산차의 복당 생시체중과 복당 출생시 생존 자돈수가 각각 13.5 kg 과 9.5 두로 1산차와 7~9 산차에 비하여 우수하였다.
