  • Over the last several decades, the United States has experienced a great number of natural disasters. To minimize the impact of the natural hazard events, the U.S. government spent a tremendous amount of money through federal assistant programs. To be eligible for the programs, a mitigation project must be cost effective (more benefits compared to project costs). However, the state and local communities suffering from the natural disasters generally have difficulty in collecting reliable evidence for their damages which can be converted later into benefits when a mitigation project is implemented. Therefore, this paper shows the process of conducting a benefit cost analysis with limited data. Besides, it also provides how to apply the limited data to the analysis through a case study. Consequently, this paper help state and local communities get funding from the federal government, which in turns will improve the image of construction industry by preventing people from natural disasters.

  • Recently developed raised floor heating system is not only capable of basic function to reduce noise between floors, but also is a multi-functional floor heating system enabling natural ventilation. The procedure of this system for natural ventilation is to import outdoor air through bottom space of the floor heating system, circulate indoor space and discharge it out of ceiling. In winter, powerless natural ventilation is possible with buoyancy effect caused by temperature difference between outdoor and indoor. And it also allows saving of energy by importing pre-heated air in bottom space of the floor heating system. To evaluate ventilation performance of this system, on-site measurement was conducted in 2 test laboratories, and the nominal air change rate was satisfied as 0.4$\sim$0.8 h-1 under the condition of outdoor temperature $5^{\circ}C{\sim}-5^{\circ}C$, which was evaluated as highly possible to be applied as a natural ventilation system in multi-family houses.

  • After an earthquake, information regarding potential damage to buildings close to the epicenter is very important during the initial emergency response. This study proposes the use of crowdsourced measured acceleration response data collected from smartphones located within buildings to perform system identification of building structures during earthquake excitations, and the feasibility of the proposed approach is studied. The principal advantage of using crowdsourced smartphone data is the potential to determine the condition of millions of buildings without incurring hardware, installation, and long-term maintenance costs. This study's goal is to assess the feasibility of identifying the lowest fundamental natural frequencies of buildings without knowing the orientations and precise locations of the crowds' smartphones in advance. Both input-output and output-only identification methods are used to identify the lowest fundamental natural frequencies of numerical finite element models of a real building structure. The effects of time synchronization and the orientation alignment between nearby smartphones on the identification results are discussed, and the proposed approach's performance is verified using large-scale shake table tests of a scaled steel building. The presented results illustrate the potential of using crowdsourced smartphone data with the proposed approach to identify the lowest fundamental natural frequencies of building structures, information that should be valuable in making emergency response decisions.

  • Construction projects are full of risks. This is particularly the case in civil construction projects that are often featured with large scale, complexity and involving a large number of participating parties. The eventuation of risks typically results in extended project durations leading to an increase in the total project budget. The consequence can be amplified considering the significant impacts of civil construction projects on the society, from economical, environmental and social perspectives. This research investigates the significance of risks within civil construction projects and approaches to deal with risks. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with local industry practitioners in South Australia on this matter. It is found that the industry is fairly aware of risks associated with civil construction projects and subsequently has procedures in place to attempt to minimize the impacts of these risks on the project outcomes. The interview results also indicate that there is limited utilization of software for the risk management purpose from the cost estimation perspective.

  • Stone is one of the oldest material for construction and artistic works. This study investigates the current use of stones in landscape constructional works, and the design criteria to advance the arts of natural stone arrangements. Thirty four experts and thirty two others were surveyed with various photos of simulated construction works of natural stone arrangements fond improved design guidelines. Major findings are as follows: -The payment for the use of stones ranges approximately 5 to 10% of total cost of landscape constructional works. More stones may be used when better retailing system is introduced, working skill is standardized, and more of the substitute natural stones made of blasted rocks are provided and the cost goes down. -Preferences showed little difference for the mixed use of different sizes, colors and shapes of stones, and for the use of similar ones, in the construction of walls. This does not match with the current design guidelines. -Arranging three stones, which symbolizes heaven, earth, and human being, was the most preferred. As the supply of natural stones is limited and more substitute stones are used, it its needed to establish guidelines for the production of substitute stones. -Grasses are much more preferred between pavement stones than mortars. -In current practices, top of piled up natural stones is usually arranged level. More freely curved top lines are preferred to straight line.

  • In this study, the method of estimating hydrologic information (water depth, submerged period etc.) on the proper selection of construction point and scale as well as vegetation type suggested for the design of natural riparian rehabilitation structure. Long-term comprehensive watershed model SWAT-K(Korea) was applied to this purpose. Flow duration analysis was conducted to analyze the hydrologic characteristics of Pyungchang watershed at which the 'bangtul' construction method was tested. For this purpose 20 years (1989-2008) rainfall runoff analysis was carried out. Based on the simulated daily streamflow data, flow duration curve was made to analyze the flow characteristics, and the water depth hydrograph was made to analyze the water depth distribution at the cross section. Finally, the information for the selection of proper vegetation according to the submerged period is suggested.

  • The surfactants facilitate the formation of foam bubbles under a proper condition and provide stability of foam bubbles by decreasing the surface tension of solutions and increasing the viscosity of foam surface. However, there have been almost no practical data of foam concrete in this regard so far. This study aims to understand the effects of foaming agents such as anionic synthetic surfactant and anionic natural material surfactant on the low density foamed concrete. From the experiment, the vegetable soap of anionic natural material surfactants showed a higher foaming rate, more open pores, slightly lower compressive strength, and a higher permeability coefficient compared to the vegetable soap of anionic synthetic surfactants. It is believed that the natural material surfactants make not only the surface tension of the solution low but also the viscosity of slurry high.

  • This paper analysed the effect on Heunginjimun of ground vibrations due to C.I.P. works during Heunginjimun restoration period. Vibration criteria and laws for historic structures was investigated. The vibration was measured under test construction in the field, analysed and evaluated. Because the ground vibration exceeded the vibration criteria, the restoration construction could not be go along. But as vibration was transferred to the upper structures, it was confirmed that vibration levels declined, because of differences between natural and forced frequencies. If the natural frequencies database of historic structures are established, it will help with management and preservation of cultural properties by an environmental vibration effects evaluation.

  • Construction project is necessary element for human life to upgrade the quality and convenience. However, due to its contradictory nature to the environment conservation, environmental pollution and damage, deterioration of natural scenery, noise/vibration, water quality pollution, etc. caused in the process of construction greatly affect the environment. The purpose of this study is to propose checklist for environment management can be used in construction phase. For this, we went ahead with the research by studying the existing research related to environment-friendly construction project management both at home and abroad, investigation and analysis of environment-related laws and ordinances, and drawing the checklists for natural environment and living environment at the construction phase. As a result, we were able to compile a checklist for nine items including geological features, animals and plants, use of soil, quality of air, water, and soil, construction wastes, noise, vibration, recreation, and sceneries. The checklist is structured in 4 grades and coded so as to allow it to be developed with the use of computer system in future. We hope that the checklist presented in this study will help lead the managers at the construction phase in construction development sustainable from the perspective of environmental conservation.
