Optimal remediation design using the pump and treat(P&T) method and natural attenuation was accomplished in consideration for degradation processes, such as sorption and first-order decay rate. Variation of both sorption and first-order decay rate has influence on design of optimal remediation application. When sorption effect increases, the more pumping rate and pumping wells are required. The location of operated wells is on the centerline of contaminant plume and wells near hot spot are mainly operated when sorption effect increases. The higher of first-order decay rate, the less pumping rate is required. These results show that the degradation processes have to be considered as one of the essential factors for optimal remediation design.
Several soil bacteria were found to degrade N-Acylhomoserine lactones (NAHLs), thereby interfering with the bacterial quorum sensing system. In this research, fifteen strains of NAHL degrading rhizobacteria were isolated from potato rhizosphere. Based on phenotypic characteristics and 16S rDNA sequence analyses, the strains were identified as members of genera Bacillus, Streptomyces, Arthrobacter, Pseudomonas and Mesorhizobium. All tested isolates were capable to degrade both synthetic and natural NAHL produced by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc) strain EMPCC. In quorum quenching experiments selected isolates, especially Mesorhizobium sp., were markedly reduced the pathogenicity of Pcc strain EMPCC in potato tubers and totally suppressed tissue maceration on potato tubers. These led to consider the latter as a useful biocontrol agent against Pectobacterium spp.
Runoff simulation tests to investigate the flow mechanics of nonsuomerged overland flow in a natural grass intervening land system were condueted and a modified kinematic wave overland runoff model developed by Choi et al. (1993) was verified. Nonhomogeneity and heterogeneity of the soil, slope, local topography, infiltration, grass density, and the density and activity of the soil microhes and wild animals were the major factors affecting the flow. Streamlines were disturbed by grass stems and small concentrated flows due to the disturbed streamlines and local topography were observed a lot. Relatively larger concentrated flows were observed where bundles of grass were dominant than where individual grasses were growing. Predicted hydrographs were agreed verv well with measured hydrographs. Since the modified model considers grass density in computing flow depth and hydraulic radius, it can be better than existing kinematic wave model if it were used to route nonpoint source pollutant attenuation processes in many grass intervening land systems.
To evaluate the biodegradability of contaminants in an aquifer, computer modeling with RT3D model (Clement, 1997) was used. The RT3D model simulates the biodegradation of organic contaminants using a number of aerobic and anaerobic electron acceptors. The RT3D model was applied to a well-studied petroleum hydrocarbon plume in a shallow unconfined aquifer in Uiwang, Korea. The results of this study demonstrate tile importance of biodegradation processes in the monitored natural attenuation and in reducing contaminant concentrations in a shallow aquifer. The modeling results tell that the amount of electron acceptors is the key factor affecting biodegradation of TEX, the petroleum hydrocarbon contaminant in shallow groundwater

Indigenous bacterial mediation of As in contaminated sediment after biostimulation with a variety of carbon sources was investigated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Under the aerobic condition with lactate supply, indigenous bacteria increased the amount of total As extracted from the sediment and most dissolved As existed as As(V). Under the anaerobic, glucose-supplied condition, dissolved As diminished with time likely due to production of As sulfide(s) and subsequent precipitation, which resulted from bacterial reduction of ${SO_4}^{2-}$. The results implied that bacterial natural attenuation of As in subsurface has a potential to be practically applied.
In this paper, the wave propagation in an infinite poroelastic cylindrical bone with cavity is studied. An exact closed form solution is presented by employing an analytical procedure. The frequency equation for poroelastic bone is obtained when the boundaries are stress free and is examined numerically. The magnitude of the frequency equation, wave velocity and attenuation coefficient are calculated for poroelastic bone for different values of magnetic field, density and frequency. In wet bone little frequency dispersion was observed, in contrast to the results of earlier studies. Such a model would in particular be useful in large-scale parametric studies of bone mechanical response. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of magnetic field. The results indicate that the effect of magnetic field, density and frequency on wave propagation in poroelastic bone are very pronounced.
Damping materials for reducing heavy-weight floor impact noise in reinforced concrete structures were tested in apartment buildings. The effect of damping materials and an impact isolator were compared with an on-site experiment conducted in a high-rise apartment building. The loss factor of damping material analyzed more than 2 times than rubber to $1.5{\sim}2.3$, could know that Damping layer has excellent attenuation performance in side of vibration reduction. The results showed that the resonance frequency increased but vibration acceleration level decreased when the damping materials were used. The heavy-weight impact sound levels of the structure decreased substantially at 63 Hz, whereas the sound levels of the structure with the impact isolator increased.
The M-type barium ferrite ($BaFe_{12}O_{19}$) is well known magnetic material to be used as a permanent magnet due to its strong uniaxial anisotropy. The substitution of nonmagnetic $Ti^{+4}$ and magnetically weak $Co+^2ion for Fe^{+3}$ to its strong uniaxial anisotropy. The substitution of nonmagnetic $Ti^{+4}$ and magnetically weak $Co+^2ion for Fe^{+3}$ sublattices reduces the uniaxial anisotropy and those compounds open a new application field of noise suppressor at high frequencies. In this study, the magnetic and microwave absorbing properties are investigated in Ti-and Co-substituted barium ferrites ($BaFe_{12-2X} Ti_XCo_XO_{19}$). The saturated magnetization decreases linearly with the substitution of Ti and Co. The rapid drop in coercive force is observed with Ti and Co substitution upto x=1.2. The magnetic permeability spectrum shows the natural magnetic resonance in the specimens with small coercive force and large attenuation of microwave is predicted in those specimens at high frequencies (above 4 GHz).
This paper proposes a novel fractional frequency reuse(FFR) based on dynamic user distribution. In the FFR, a macro cell is divided into two regions, i.e., the inner region(IR) and outer region(OR). The criterion for dividing the IR and OR is the distance ratio of the radius. However, these distance-based criteria are uncertain in measuring user performance. This is because there are various attenuation phenomena such as shadowing and wall penetration as well as path loss. Therefore, we propose a novel FFR based on dynamic user classification with signal to interference plus noise ratio(SINR) of macro users and classify the FFR into two regions newly. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has better performance than the conventional FFR in terms of SINR and throughput of macro cell users.
