Natural gas hydrates have a high potential as the 21st century new energy resource, because it have a large amount of deposits in many deep-water and permafrost regions of the world widely. Natural gas hydrate is formed by physical binding between water molecule and gas mainly composed of methane, which is captured in the cavities of water molecules under the specific temperature and pressure. $1m^3$ methane hydrate can be decomposed to the methane gas of $172m^3$ and water of $0.8m^3$ at standard condition. Therefore, there are a lot of practical applications such as separation processes, natural gas storage transportation and carbon dioxide sequestration. For the industrial utilization of methane hydrate, it is very important to rapidly manufacture hydrate. However, when methane hydrate is artificially formed, its reaction time may be too long and the gas consumption in water becomes relatively low, because the reaction rate between water and gas is low. So in this study, hydrate formation was experimented by adding natural zeolite and Synthetic zeolite 5A in distilled water, respectively. The results show that when the Synthetic zeolite 5A of 0.01 wt% was, the amount of gas consumed during the formation of methane hydrate was higher than that in the natural zeolite. Also, the natural zeolite and Synthetic zeolite 5A decreased the hydrate formation time to a greater extent than the distilled water at the same subcooling temperature.

Recently, absorbent biofilters, which are inexpensive and easy to manacle, have been supplied to the rural areas, but have limitations in removing the nutrients effectively. Accordingly, as an alternative plan. natural zeolites were arranged in front or at the rear of the absorbent biofilters, and their removal efficiency for nitrogen and, ultimately, their applicability to the on-site wastewater treatment system were studied. Furthermore, the same experiments were carried out on artificial zeolites, made from coal ashes at National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station, to compare natural zeolites with artificial ones. Treated wastewater through the Absorbent Biofilter showed 22.6% nitrogen removal efficiency, while 64.6% was attained when natural Zeolites were placed in front of the absorbent biofilters (Zeolite-Aerobic process). As an addition, phosphorus was also efficiently removed. On the other hand, Aerobic-Zeolite process, which arranged natural zeolites at the rear of the biofilters, did not have significantly higher nitrogen removal as compared to the treatment using only the absorbent biofilters. Furthermore, upon regeneration of the natural zeolite, the ion exchange rate was fecund to increase over 10% as compared to before regeneration. Our results show that natural zeolites, applied to the on-site wastewater treatment system through the Zeolite-Aerobic process, not only increase the removal efficiency of nutrients, but, by choosing the appropriate regeneration time, can also be cast-effective. Artificial zeolites, on the other hand, though more efficient in removing nutrients, cannot be regenerated and, therefore, are not cost-effective.
This study was carried out to develop the low-priced adsorbent by synthesizing the zeolite of high cation exchange capacity with the natural zeolite and to examine the adsorbing ability of this zeolite. The dominant clay minerals were clinoptilolite and mordenite in natural zeolite, while phillipsite in the synthesized zeolite. Adsorption reaction of $NH_4^{+}$on zeolite was reached equilibrium after 2 hrs. The amount of adsorption was increased with increasing the concentration of $NH_4^{+}$or the pH of suspension. The cation exchange capacity of zeolite was slightly decreased below pH 4.0 by acidic treatment. It was estimated that the ability of the synthesized zeolite to remove noxious ions was better than that of the natural zeolite.
This study was conducted to examine the adsorption capacity of $NH_4\;^+-N$ by natural zeolite for the purpose of investigating the possibility for $NH_4\;^+-N$ eliminator of Korean natural zeolite. The dominant clay minerals of zeolite were clinoptilolite and mordenite. The reaction of $NH_4\;^+-N$ adsorption by zeolite reached equilibrium after 4hrs. The amount of $NH_4\;^+-N$ adsoption by zeolite was not significantly affected by the particle size of zeolite. The order of $NH_4\;^+-N$ adsorption by zeolite according to exchangeable cations was Na-> Ca> K-saturated zeolite. The amount of $NH_4\;^+-N$ adsorption by zeolite was increased with increasing pH of solution and the ratio of zeolite to the volume of solution. The isothermal curvel of $NH_4\;^+-N$ adsorption by zeolite was conformed to Langmuir equation.
For investigating the effectiveness of Korean natural zeolite for removal of $NH_4{^+}$ in waste waters containing $NH_4{^+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$, the adsorption of $NH_4{^+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ by three Korean natural zeolite samples, which contained mordenite and/or clinoptilolite, was measured by adding solutions containing $NH_4{^+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ or both at a concentration range from 1 to 7 mmol(+)/L of each cation. In the solutions, the zeolite samples adsorbed more amounts of $NH_4{^+}$ than $Cu^{2+}$. By seven successive equilibrations, Korean natural zeolites adsorbed $NH_4{^+}$ corresponding to 23~33% of those cation exchange capacity from the solution containing both $NH_4{^+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ at 3 mmol(+)/L of each cation. Whereas, the corresponding adsorption of $Cu^{2+}$ was 17-27% of the CEC. Korean natural zeolite exhibited selectivity for $NH_4{^+}$ but not for $Cu^{2+}$. Nevertheless, it using as a soil amendment after removing of $NH_4{^+}$ in waste waters should be carefully controlled on the application rate.

Enormous amount of zeolite by-products as a fine powder have been produced while manufacturing commercial zeolite products. Granulation of the zeolite by-products is necessary in order for them to be recycled as soil conditioners or absorbent for various environmental contaminants due to the limitations inherent from their physical properties. We granulated the zeolite powders using Portland cement as a cementing agent and characterized the physical and chemical properties of the granulated zeolite product. The experimental natural zeolite had a Si/Al ratio of 4.8 and CEC of 68.1 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$. The X-ray diffractometry (XRD) revealed that clinoptilolite and mordenite were the major minerals of natural zeolite. Smectite, feldspar and quartz also existed as secondary minerals. Optimum conditions of granulated zeolite production occurred when natural zeolite was mixed with Portland cement at a 4:1 ratio and granulated using the extruder, left to harden for one month at $25^{\circ}C$ and treated at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The wide spectra of XRD revealed that the granulated zeolite had amorphous oxide minerals. The alkali- or thermal-treated natural zeolite exhibited pH-dependent charge properties. The major minerals of the granulated zeolite were clinoptilolite, mordenite and tobermorite. The buffering capacity and charge density of the granulated zeolite were greater than those of natural zeolite.
In this study, capping with recycled aggregate and natural zeolite in marine sediment was performed to investigate its inhibitory effect on pollutants released from sediment to seawater. An experiment was performed by capping with amendments for 60 days, and concentrations of organic matter (COD), nitrate, phosphate and metallic elements (Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, As, and Cr) were measured. Two capping materials effectively suppressed pollutant release. Recycled aggregate showed better effectiveness for organic pollutant, nitrate and phosphate release. Meanwhile, natural zeolite was effective for metallic elements. As a result, recycled aggregate and natural zeolite can be considered as cost-effective/inexpensive capping material candidates. Also, the capping material can be selected according to the target pollutant.
This study was conducted to examine the adsorption capacity of $NH_{3}-N$ by natural zeolite for the purpose of investigating the possibility for $NH_{3}-N$ eliminator of korea natural zeolite. The dominant clay minerals of zeolite was clinoptiloite. The amount of $NH_{3}-N$ adsorption by zeplite was not significantly affected by the particle size of zeolite and increased with increasing the ratio of zeolite to the volume of solution. Removal ratio of 100% of NH$_{3}$-N by non, 1st, 2nd regenerated cloumn was continued separately during 4.5, 18, 30hr and this amount was each 0.081, 0.324, 0.540g $NH_{3}-N/zero$.100g. The eluenting amount of K, Ca, Mg was increased on the zeolite cloumn according to that of Na decreased. The amount of 74% of $NH_{3}-N$ was desorved on the zeolite cloumn for regenerating treatment during 8hr. The perfect removal amount was $0.216gNH_{3}-N/zero$.100g on the zeolite cloumn with field sample.
This study was conducted to find out the effect for removal of $NH_3$ gas, one of the offensive odor. The removal efficiencies of $NH_3$ gas through zeolie column increased with the decreased percolation velocity. The effect of zeolite colum in removing $NH_3$ gas was influenced by the water content of zeolite and the added amount of zeolite, but was not influenced by the setting method of zeolite. The $NH_3$ gas removing sequence of saturated cation species on zeolite was in order of Ca->Na->$NH_4$ ->Natural->K-zeolite. Consequently the effect of zeolite on $NH_3$ gas removal efficiency is consided by the water content, added amount and saturated cation of the zeolite.
The effects of zeolite type catalysts addition on the thermal decomposition of low density polyethylene(LDPE) and ethylene vinyl acetate(EVA) resin have been studied in a thermal analyzer(TGA, DSC) and a small batch reactor. The zeolite type catalysts tested were natural zeolite, FCC catalyst, used FCC catalyst, and catalyst A. As the results of TGA experiments, addition of antifogging-agent decreased the pyrolysis point to $250^{\circ}C$, but addition of longevity-agent and clay reduced the pyrolysis rate in EVA resin. Addition of the zeolite type catalysts in the LDPE resin increased the pyrolysis rate in the order of catalyst A > used FCC catalyst > natural zeolite > LDPE resin. Addition of the zeolite type catalysts in the EVA resin increased the pyrolysis rate in the order of used FCC catalyst > natural zeolite > catalyst A > EVA resin. In the DSC experiments for LDPE resin, addition of zeolite type catalysts decreased the melting point and the heat of pyrolysis reaction in the order of catalyst A > used FCC catalyst > natural zeolite> LDPE resin. In the batch system experiments, the mixing of natural zeolite enhanced the yield of liquid fuel oil.
