Periodic vortex separations generate periodic vertical forces acting on a trailing edge of an airfoil. When a natural frequency of the trailing edge of the airfoil is close to a vortex shedding frequency, an amplitude of the edge oscillation becomes maximal; it makes intensive noise called singing. Motion of the trailing edge may also feedback to the vortex shedding so that self-sustained oscillation appear, and a resonant frequency is locked in some interval of the speed of the incident flow. In this study, a theoretical model is proposed and applied for modeling an airfoil singing. Results are compared with experimental measurements which are carried out in an anechoic wind tunnel.

Near-wake flow field of a circular cylinder is studied by means of a cinematic PIV system with high sampling rate and large internal memory block. Experiments are conducted in a closed-cycle water tunnel system and a cross-correlation algorithm in conjunction with FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis and an offset correlation technique is used for vector processing. With the help of very high sampling frequency compared to the shedding frequency, it is possible to obtain phase-averaged information of the three-dimensional wake, even though the shedding is not forced but natural. Phase-locked vortical structures observed simultaneously from the spanwise and cross-stream planes are displayed in the wake-transition regime where fine-scale secondary vortices have a spanwise wavelength or around one diameter. Spatial relations and temporal evolutions of the primary Karman vortex and the secondary vortex are also discussed schematically.

When a natural frequency of the trailing edge of a wing is close to a vortex shedding frequency, an amplitude of the edge oscillation becomes maximal; it makes intensive noise called singing. Motion of the trailing edge may also feedback to the vortex shedding so that self-sustained oscillation appears, and a resonant frequency is locked in some interval of the speed of the incident flow. In this study, we first evaluate main features of oscillating characteristics of the wing. Second we simulate fluid-structure interaction of the wing with a flap using a commercial code, ANSYS-CFX, and investigate lift characteristics in a frequency domain.
The experimental investigations on the motion characteristics of a marine riser both in air and water were performed. The static deflections and natural frequencies of the riser in air including the effect of static offset, were obtained from the experiment. These results were compared with those of theoretical prediction by using a simple asymptotic formula. In order to investigate the nonlinear motion characteristics of the riser subject to nonlinear viscous drag and large displacement, the forced oscillation tests both in air and water were performed. In the forced oscillation tests in air, it was found that the transverse motion due to geometrical nonlinearity grows when the amplitude of in-line oscillation exceeds a certain critical value, say, order of 1-2 diameters. The planar motions of the riser in water due to vortex shedding and the geometrical nonlinearity were described. Some of these results were also compared with those of theoretical analysis, which uses a numerical perturbation technique based on the derived linear asymptotic solutions, and found to be generally in good agreement.
To assess the risk of genetically modified (GM) rice on the agricultural ecosystem, agronomic characteristics, pollen longevity and outcrossing rate between GM (Iksan 483 and Milyang 204) and non-GM (their wild types and female parents) varieties were investigated using the bar gene as a tracer marker in paddy field. The agronomic characteristics of two GM rice were similar to their female-parents (non-GM rice) except heading date and 1,000 grain weight of Iksan 483, and they did not show a difference by the introgression of the bar gene as the genetic traits of rice varieties. Pollen viability was more than 90% just after shedding, and it was rapidly decreased below 50% at 5 minutes after shedding both GM and non-GM varieties. The Pollen longevity was lost after 30 minutes of anthesis. When the distance of gene flow from GM to non-GM rice detected to 6 m from the edge of GM rice plant, the maximum distance of pollen dispersal was 4.5m and 3.9m in Iksan 483 and Milyang 204, respectively, and that was increased in order of west, south, east, and north to the dominant wind direction, west-south. Mean outcrossing rate was very low as 0.003 and 0.001% within 1.5 m from the edge of Iksan 483 and Milyang 204, and the GM hybrids by the pollen dispersal did not detected over 4.5 m from the edge of GM rice plant. The results may help to establish the strategy which reduce the risk of pollen-mediated gene flow between GM and non-GM rice.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the characteristics of the vortex- induced vibration of an elastically supported circular cylinder in the cross air flow. For a range of velocities, power spectral densities of the signals from a hot-wire anemometer placed in the wake of an oscillating circular cylinder and gap sensors placed in the both ends of a circular cylinder were obtained to determine vortex-shedding frequencies, natural frequencies and vibrating frequencies of a cylinder. The effects of slots in the test section on vortex shedding and cylinder oscillation were investigated. The present study covered the reduced velocity range 1.0 .leg. Ur .leg. 64.6. The response characteristics of the cylinder has been shown to vary extensively, depending on the slots in the test section as well as on the reduced velocity. For an elastically supported cylinder, a purely translation mode oscillation was observed at a low velocity, however a rotation mode oscillation was often superposed for higher velocities. These two oscillating frequencies were equal to their natural frequencies irrespective of the changes of free stream velocities.
The boiler structure is determined by combustion characteristics and construction costs in the combustion chamber of a large commercial boiler. The heat transfer in boiler is composed of the radiation and the convection. The convective heat transfer has happened to back-pass heating surface. The combustion gas sequentially passes through the reheater tube, 1st economizer tube, and 2nd economizer tube. In case of being lowered in boiler height, we have to install additional tube bundle in back-pass heating surface for increasing the heat transfer of boiler, which causes the noise and vibration from combustion gas. When the combustion gas passes through the back-pass tube bundle in specified load of commercial boiler, this paper analyzes the acoustic characteristics between vortex-shedding frequency and natural frequency in tube bundle cavity. The case study reduce the resonance by changing natural frequency characteristics of tube-bundle cavity using a way to install ant-noise baffle in the direction of combustion gas flow.

We experimentally attempted to understand the vibration characteristics of a flexible pipe excited by vortex shedding. This has been extensively studied in the past decades (For example, see [2-9]). However, there are still areas that need more study. One of them is to study the relation between spatial characteristics of a flow induced vibrating pipe, such as its length, the distribution of wave number, and frequency responses. A non-linear mechanism between the responses of in-line and cross-flow directions is also an area of interests, if the pipe is relatively long so that structural modal density is reasonably high. In order to investigate such areas, two kinds of instrumented pipe were designed. The instrumented pipes, of which the lengths are equally 6m, are wound with rubber and silicon tape in different ways, having different vortex shedding conditions. One has uniform cross-section of diameter of 26. 7mm, and the other has equally spaced by 4 sub-sections, which are composed of different diameters of 75.9, 61.1, 45.6 and 26.7mm. Both pipes are towed in a water tank (200m ${\times}$ 16m ${\times}$ 7m) so that they experienced different vortex shedding excitations. The towing pipe experiments exhibit several valuable features. One of them is that the natural frequencies and their corresponding strain mode shapes dominate the strain response of the uniform pipe. However, for those of non-uniform pipe, the responses are more likely local and many modes participate in it.

Near-wake flow field downstream of a circular cylinder in the wake-transition regime where fine-scale secondary vortices have a spanwise wavelength of around one diameter has been studied by means of phase-averaging from cinematic PIV data. A cross-correlation algorithm in conjunction with the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)analysis and an offset correlation technique is used for obtaining the velocity vectors. Which the help of very high sampling rate compared to the shedding frequency, it is possible to obtain phase-averaged flow fields although the shedding is not forced but natural. Phase -locked three-dimensional vortical structures are reconstructed form the phase-averaged data in one x-y(cross-sectional) and several z-x(spanwise-streamwise)planes. In this process of phase-averaging in a z-x plane, a technique to freeze the secondary vortices relative to the centerline is applied. The formation process of the secondary vortices is shown by considering spatial relations between the primary Karman and the secondary vortices and their temporal evolutions.
