Jeju island has an area of $1,810km^2$ and is considered the largest island in South Korea. In Jeju Island the average annual precipitation is 1,957mm. About 54% of precipitation is estimated to be lost due to evapo-transpiration and direct runoff, and the remainder is recharged. Historically springs and puddles were the island's primary sources of water. However, after 1970 all sectors, including the urban and industrial sectors depended solely on groundwater as their water resource. As vast amount of water is being recharged the Island has many springs, especially near the coastlines. Historlcally, spring of Jeju Island formed village and make it possible to continue a life. Also it produces many values such as the spring related story, culture, tourism and ecosystems. Especially, the naturally rare phenomenon that about 900 springs appear over the whole area of Jeju Island makes it possible to call it as a natural heritage. As a result of this most springs have either been destroyed or been in the state of neglect. In some cases it has been observed that springs were preserved by nature, however majority of the cases saw springs losing their own nature as a result of abandonment. It was recorded that there were 911 springs in Jeju Island with most of them being distributed along the coast, which consequently increases their susceptibility to seawater intrusion. The objective of this study is therefore to analyze Eco-cultural and Engineering characteristics about springs in the island, highlighting its past utilization and reestablishing its potential as a source of spring.

Groundwater and rainwater are the only sources of freshwater in small islands as many islands lack surface water sources. Groundwater occurring in the form of freshwater lens floating on denser seawater is highly dependent on natural recharge from rainfall. A sharp interface numerical model for regional and well scale modeling is selected to assess the sustainability of freshwater lens in the island of Tongatapu. In this study, 29 downscaled General Circulation Model(GCM) predictions are input to the recharge model based on water balance modelling. Three GCM predictions which represent wet, dry and medium conditions are selected for use in the groundwater flow model. Total freshwater volume and number of saltwater intruded wells are simulated under various climate scenarios with GCM predicted rainfall pattern, sea level rise and pumping. Simulations indicate that the sustainability of the freshwater lens is threatened by the frequent droughts which are predicted under all scenarios of recharge. The natural depletion of the lens during droughts and increase in water demands, leads to saltwater upconing under the pumping wells. Implementation of drought management measures is of utmost importance to ensure sustainability of freshwater lens in future.

The purpose of this study is to develop a damper that protects against the dangers of tidal waves since there's no function to block the inflow of large amounts of water into the inside When natural disasters such as tidal waves occur. Therefore, it intended to derive the design data by simulating through flow analysis in order to predict the pressure that a damper configured to open and close manually or automatically receives. It examined the preceding researches first and conducted the flow analysis, to predict the force of the damper installed on the bottom of the building's outside to prevent the inflow of seawater into the inside when natural disaster occurring. As a result, it showed that, in the event of a tsunami, it moved about 170m and the time impacting the damper occurred within about eight seconds, and, at the moment, the damper door was pressured about 17bar. Also, it could identify that the load was approximately 900kN and the force by the fluid was applied to the damper door.
This study aimed to develop the methods of growing Enteromorpha prolifera natural seedlings in its natural habitat and artificial indoor seedlings by inducing spore release. Likewise, the study examined the possibility of mass production by developing cultivation techniques with cultivating examination. The natural seedling of E.prolifera thrived in a sea area composed of sand and mud, which Is its natural habitat. Growing of this alga on the seedling frame 20 cm high from the bottom at the intertidal zone in summer and 40 cm high in fall was found to be very effective. However, enabling the best attachment rate for artificial indoor seedling requires inducing spore release after drying the mature thalli in a dark place fur about 12∼24 hours and setting seedling nets in a dark water tank (spore solution) for 24 hours. Breeding E.prolifera in a pole-system farm is best done in shallow sea areas with mud or mud and sand geological feature. However, floating-system lam is better for deep-sea areas with fast current. Ideal farming places are sea areas with plenty of nutritional salt and safe places that protect the lam facilities against billows. Furthermore, an exposure method on seawater surface to produce larger output should be used.

Natural circulation systems (NCSs) are extensively applied in nuclear power plants because of their simplicity and inherent safety features. For some passive natural circulation systems in floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs), the ocean is commonly used as the heat sink. Condensation induced water hammer (CIWH) events may appear as the steam directly contacts the subcooled seawater, which seriously threatens the safe operation and integrity of the NCSs. Nevertheless, the research on the formation mechanisms of CIWH is insufficient, especially in NCSs. In this paper, the characteristics of flow rate and fluid temperature are emphatically analyzed. Then the formation types of CIWH are identified by visualization method. The experimental results reveal that due to the different size and formation periods of steam slugs, the flow rate presents continuous and irregular oscillation. The fluid in the horizontal hot pipe section near the water tank is always subcooled due to the reverse flow phenomenon. Moreover, the transition from stratified flow to slug flow can cause CIWH and enhance flow instability. Three types of formation mechanisms of CIWH, including the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, the interaction of solitary wave and interface wave, and the pressure wave induced by CIWH, are obtained by identifying 67 CIWH events.
In this study, we crossbred Epinephelus akaara and E. lanceolatus to produce a hybrid grouper with faster growth and adaptation to domestic aquaculture environments. The plasma cortisol and glucose levels and osmoregulation (stress response indicators) of the hybrid grouper, E. akaara ♀ × E. lanceolatus ♂, were investigated under several salinity levels (32, 24, 16, and 8 psu). The body lengths and weights of E. akaara (8.2 ± 0.1 cm, 8.3 ± 0.4 g) and the hybrid (8.6 ± 0.1 cm, 10.0 ± 0.4 g) were similar at the start of the experiment, but were significantly different at the end of the experiment. Juveniles of both E. akaara and the hybrid showed greater weight gain, specific growth, and feed conversion rate (FCR) under low salinity of 16 psu. Under the 8 psu treatment, the juvenile E. akaara all died, while the hybrid juveniles survived. Plasma cortisol levels were not affected by lower salinity in both species. The above results indicate that the hybrid is more tolerant of low salinity than is E. akaara, although both species exhibited higher growth and FCR at 16 psu, lower than the salinity of natural seawater. Thus, juveniles of both E. akaara and the hybrid can be more effectively cultured in brackish areas or waters with salinity lower than that of seawater.

Aluminum alloys have poor corrosion resistance compared to the pure aluminum due to the additive elements. Thus, anodizing technology artificially generating thick oxide films are widely applied nowadays in order to improve corrosion resistance. Anodizing is one of the surface modification techniques, which is commercially applicable to a large surface at a low price. However, most studies up to now have focused on its commercialization with hardly any research on the assessment and improvement of the physical characteristics of the anodized films. Therefore, this study aims to select the optimum temperature of sulfuric electrolyte to perform excellent corrosion resistance in the harsh marine environment through electrochemical experiment in the seawater upon generating porous films by variating the temperatures of sulfuric electrolyte. To fabricate uniform porous film of 5083 aluminum alloy, we conducted electro-polishing under the 25 V at $5^{\circ}C$ condition for three minutes using mixed solution of ethanol (95 %) and perchloric (70 %) acid with volume ratio of 4:1. Afterward, the first step surface modification was performed using sulfuric acid as an electrolyte where the electrolyte concentration was maintained at 10 vol.% by using a jacketed beaker. For anode, 5083 aluminum alloy with thickness of 5 mm and size of $2cm{\times}2cm$ was used, while platinum electrode was used for cathode. The distance between the two was maintained at 3 cm. Anodic polarization test was performed at scan rate of 2 mV/s up to +3.0 V vs open circuit potential in natural seawater. Surface morphology was compared using 3D analysis microscope to observe the damage behavior. As a result, the case of surface modification showed a significantly lower corrosion current density than that without modification, indicating excellent corrosion resistance.

Multi-regression statistical analyses were applied for the water quality data of shallow alluvial ground water (n = 47) collected from the Youngdeok area, in order to quantitatively generalize the natural (non-anthropogenic) causes of regional water quality variation. Seven samples having the high contamination index ( $C_{a}$ > 3) reflect the striong effects by anthropogenic activity. Most of the alluvial groundwaters have acquired their quality primarily due to the dissolution of carbonate minerals. The results of multi-regression analysis show that chlorine is mainly derived from seawater effect. Sulfur isotopic compositions of dissolved sulfur and the S $O_4$/Cl ratio also enable us to discriminate the samples (n = 18) which are affected by atmospheric input of marine aerosol (sea-spray) and also by mixing between freshwater and seawater. Hydrogen and oxygen isotope data of the samples collected lie close to the local meteoric water line obtained from nearby Pohang city but has lower slope (5.45) on the $\delta$D-$^{18}$ O plot, indicating that alluvial groundwater was recharged from infiltrated meteoric water which has undergone some degree of kinetic evaporation. The estimated initial isotopic composition of the recharged water ($\delta$D = -74.8$^{0}$ /$_{00}$, $\delta$$^{18}$ O = -10.8$^{[-1000]}$ /$_{[-1000]}$ ) suggests that the alluvial ground water recharge largely occurs during summer storm events.s.s.
The growth, respiration, ingestion, and ecological efficiencies of Hexagrammos otakii larvae and juveniles reared on different diets and temperatures were estimated. A factorial experiment using two diets [non-enriched hatched Artemia nauplii (NEA) and enriched Artemia nauplii (EA)] crossed with two temperatures [natural seawater temperature (NT, $5.1-8.5^{\circ}C$) and heated seawater (HT, $13{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$)] was conducted to investigate growth and energy budgets of Hexagrammos otakii larvae and juveniles. The energy used by larvae and juveniles for 6 weeks was calculated using data on ingestion, growth, respiration, excretion, and egestion. In the NT trials, the energy used for growth by larvae and juveniles was 0.121 and 0.129 Kcal in the NEA and EA treatments, respectively. Assimilation efficiency at NT were 78.0% and 80.2% in the NEA and EA trials, respectively. Gross growth efficiency ($K_1$) were 60.5% and 62.3% and net growth efficiency ($K_2$) was 77.56% and 77.71% in the NEA and EA trials, respectively. In the HT trials, the energy used for growth by juveniles was 0.189 and 0.212 Kcal in the NEA and EA trials, respectively. Assimilation efficiency at HT was 86.4% and 95.1% in the NEA and EA trials, respectively. Values of $K_1$ and $K_2$ at HT were 69.5% and 80.43%, respectively, in the NEA trials, and 73.9% and 77.66%, respectively, in the EA trials. These results suggest that enriched Artemia nauplii and higher temperatures ($13{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$) are effective for rearing larvae and juveniles of H. otakii.
While some steps in laver aquaculture production can be controlled artificially to a certain extent, the culturing process is largely affected by natural factors, such as the characteristics of seawater, climatic and oceanographic conditions, etc. This study aims to find a direct relationship between climatic and oceanographic factors (water temperature, air temperature, salinity, rainfall, sunshine duration and wind speed) and laver aquaculture production in Wando region, the biggest aquaculture production area of laver, located in the southwest coast of Korea using a multiple regression analysis. Despite the small sample size of a dependent variable, the goodness of model fit appeared acceptable. In addition, the R-squared value was 0.951, which means that the variables were very explanatory. Model results indicated that duration of sunshine, temperature, and rainfall during the farming period from the end of September to the end of April would be important factors affecting significantly to the laver aquaculture production.
