There have been repetitive landslides and debris flows on natural terrain induced by intensive rainfalls which have never been experienced during the last a few decades in Korea. Frequencies and magnitudes of landslides and debris flows are steeply increased after 2000 resulting in huge damages of human beings and facilities. According to a statistical data from NEMA, the human deaths induced by landslides and slope hazards occupies 22.3% of the total human deaths by all the natural hazards in Korea during the last 30 years. Among the human deaths by landslides and slope hazards, 85% of the damages were caused by landslides and debris flows on natural hazards. Therefore, this paper summarizes important events of landslides and debris flows, their characteristics, and suggests some methods of damage mitigation.

Most transformer use insulating and cooling fluids derived from petroleum crude oil, but mineral oil is some possibility of environmental pollution and fire with explosion. vegetable oil fluids extracted from seed has superior biodegradation and fire-resistant properties including an exceptionally high fire point enhancing fire safety. In this study, it is aimed at the practicality of substituting natural ester dielectric fluid for mineral oil in liquid insulation system of transformers. As a rise in coil winding temperature has a direct influence on transformer life time, it is important to evaluate the temperature rise of coil winding in vegetable oil in comparison with mineral oil. Three transformers for the test are designed with 10KVA, 13.2KV, one phase unit. The temperature are directly measured in insulating oil of these transformers with the two sorts of natural ester and mineral oil dielectric fluid respectively. Temperature of vegetable oil transformers was similar to temperature of mineral oil transformer in the same design at 80% load and above.

In this study, we investigated and compared some chemical properties of Korean natural honeys and sugar-fed honeys for their quality characteristics. The natural honey samples were monofloral from chestnut and acacia flowers, and the sugar-fed honey samples were collected from honeybees feeding on sugar cane and sugar beet. The chemical properties of the honey samples, such as moisture, total protein, total lipids, ash, carbohydrate, minerals, vitamins, and free amino acids were determined. The moisture content was $18.5{\pm}0.9%$ in natural acacia honey, $17.2{\pm}0.9%$ in natural chestnut honey, $19.6{\pm}0.9%$ in sugar cane-fed honey, and $24.8{\pm}%$ in sugar beet-fed honey. The total protein and ash contents were the highest in natural chestnut honey. Maltose and sucrose were not detected in natural honeys but were detected at 2~7% in sugar-fed honeys. The vitamin, mineral, and free amino acids contents of natural honeys were higher than sugar-fed honeys. The natural chestnut honey is the highest in honeys. These results confirmed that the quality of natural honey was better than that of sugar-fed honey. Also, the vitamin, mineral, and free amino acids contents are potential characteristics for distinguishing between natural and sugar-fed honeys.
The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the contents of minerals and ionic components in domestic commercial natural mineral waters, and to investigate the relationship between water quality and characteristics of suspended and rocks there of its source. All mineral waters tested in this study met the korean mineral water quality guideline, although chemical components varied widely depending upon the geological characteristics and degree of urbanization of the source area or physical water treatment method. The water quality of commercial bottled water was different from that of source water, especially in cationic components, and showed a tendency to become worse with time elapsed. The water quality on the bottle was also different from the measured quality.
The purpose of the study was to assess and compare the diversity of plant species (trees, shrubs, herbs) of natural forest and plantations. A total of 52 plant species were recorded in the natural forest, of which 16 were trees, 15 were shrubs and 21 were herbs. On the contrary, 31 species of plants including 11 trees, 8 shrubs and 12 herbs were identified in plantation forest. Shannon-Wiener diversity index were 2.70, 2.72 and 3.12 for trees, shrubs and herbs respectively in the natural forest. However, it was 2.35 for tree species, 2.31 for shrub species and 2.81 for herb species in the plantation forest. Jaccard's similarity index showed that 71% species of trees, 44% species of shrubs and 43% species of herbs were same in plantations and natural forest.

In many regions of Korea, including the Four Major Rivers, the seriousness of the problem of algal blooms due to eutrophication of water quality is being raised. In this study, in order to solve these social problems, we manufactured a filter using natural mineral fusion (red illite, zeolite, germanium ceramic, selenium ceramic, carbon ceramic) and independently developed a tank system for green algae experiments to observe and determine the stages of change in water quality. In order to study ways to improve water quality through quantitative analysis, 1 ton of severely polluted green algae water from the Nak dong River region was stored in a water tank and exposed to ultraviolet rays in the same environment as the Nak dong River. Then, the same environment as the Nak dong River was created. The results were derived from a 5-week water quality test. The results of this experiment confirmed that green-colored cyano bacteria were significantly reduced just by the turbidity results. The results were obtained through a request to the Korea Testing & Research Institute located in Changwon-si, Gyeong sang nam-do. CI-(chlorine ion) and NH3-N(ammonia nitrogen) had the effect of saving every week. The device used in this study was made of natural minerals free of heavy metals that are harmless to the human body and nature through long-term consideration and exploration to kill and prevent various strains living in water. Green purification system using natural hydrogen generating mineral filter were effective a non-chemical and physical methods. The results of this study are one way to contribute to the serious problems caused by green algae in many countries, and will contribute to the water quality environment by preventing the waste of environmental resources, improving the health of the people, and increasing the ability to purify environmental water quality at home and abroad.
In this study, natural substance and mineral materials was used for architectural interior wallpaper. Because natural substance and minerals are environment-friendly material with moisture adsorption and desorption properties. Natural substance and mineral materials was evaluated in moisture adsorption and desorption properties. Also, in the diatomite, the pores were observed on SEM photographs. Thus, it is supposed that moisture adsorption and desorption properties were influenced by the microstructure of the pore. The wallpaper according to the ratio of the mixture was analyzed for physical properties and moisture adsorption & desorption properties. As a result, we developed a wallpaper having excellent hygrothermal performance.
The manufacture property of anhydrous calcium sulfate (anhydrite Ⅱ) from flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum discharged from domestic thermoelectric power plants to apply as an auxiliary material of cement and concrete by high temperature treatment were investigated. The FGD gypsum was completely converted to anhydrite Ⅱ at the temperature of 700$^{\circ}C$ and the retention time of 1 hr. In the phase transformation process, particle size was also changed. The chemical composition, particle size and heat property of anhydrite Ⅱ made from the FGD gypsum were similar to them of natural gypsum. In the leaching test of sulfate ion (SO$_4^{2-}$) at the temperature of 90$^{\circ}C$ and the retention time of 1 hr, the amount of leached SO$_4^{2-}$ for the anhydrite Ⅱ that was sintered at 700$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr was about 50 wt.% based on that of natural gypsum. In addition, the amount of leached SO$_4^{2-}$ for the anhydrite Ⅱ by adding the slaked lime of 3 wt.% decreased about 70 wt.% comparing with that of natural gypsum. In the application test, the compressive strength of cement and concrete manufactured by using the anhydrite Ⅱ as an auxiliary material were similar or superior compared with them of cement and concrete done by natural gypsum as an auxiliary material.

The removal of arsenic(V) using four different natural minerals were evaluated. Parameters like contact time, pH, adsorbent dosages, and As(V) concentration were optimized. The kinetics of adsorption was observed to be fast and reached equilibrium within 2h. As(V) adsorption on studied minerals was dependent on pH and followed a pseudo-second-order reaction model. For kaolin, maximum adsorption was found at pH 5.0. Whereas, in case of other three minerals, a pH range of 6.0-7.0 was found to be the best for As(V) adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity (Q) was calculated by fitting Langmuir equation to the adsorption isotherms obtained under a specified condition. From the slope of best fit, the Q values were calculated to be 2.07, 2.15, 1.95 and 0.86 mg As(V)/g of bauxite, wad, iron ore and kaolin, respectively. Desorption of As(V) from loaded materials was dependent on the type of leaching reagents used. Based on the results, it was found that among the studied natural minerals, wad was the best As(V) adsorbent.
