  • Responsible environmental behavior of Youths who will live in the 21C needs the ‘Personalization of Environment’, which means the process or the result of awareness to the non-personal environment as the personal environment to show the responsible environmental behaviors through the intended physical and psychological contacts to environment. This study intended to analyze various programs of national parks, zoo, children's garden and Project Learning Tree in the United States and to discuss the possibility of ‘personalization of environment’ and implication for environmental education of Korea. Literature review, field trips, personal interviews and internet searches were used to collect information and data. Programs of North Cascade National Park, Mt. Rainier National Park and 4-H Children's Garden in Michigan State University showed the cases of direct personalization of environment focusing on the direct contact with nature. The programs of Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek and Project Learning Tree showed the possibilities of indirect personalization of environment forming meaningful relationships with nature through various indirect activities. It is suggested that various natural education programs in Unites States make nature and places meaningful for the people and it needs to be applied for the environmental education programs in Korea.

  • This study explores sustainability education in textile and apparel (T&A) programs in U.S. higher education institutions. Specifically, the researchers study whether more courses with sustainability focus are offered in higher-ranked institutions and explore whether sustainability is taught more in specific T&A related subject fields. Content analysis was conducted for 3,200 courses found in online course catalogs or the course information sites of 69 institutions. Institutions were selected from the 2015 rankings of the top 50 fashion design and top 50 fashion merchandising schools in the US on www.fashion-schools.org. All cases were coded by two coders with a Cohen's Kappa score of 97.5%, indicating good interrater reliability. Coded data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and t-tests. The findings show that sustainability is being integrated into the curricula and across courses of T&A programs in the U.S. Over half of the institution surveyed offered at least one sustainability embedded course. Higher ranked institutions provided more sustainability-related courses than power-ranked institutions. A natural match between the subject field and specific sustainability theme was observed (e.g., cultural diversity in history/culture and social psychology/education; recycle/reuse in textile science; sustainability in fashion design; social responsibility and ethics in industry/consumer). The need to introduce sustainability in courses holistically is discussed, whereby sustainability within the industry supply chain is examined in a connected way.

  • There is lack of social awareness on the importance of natural environments and effective operating systems for environmental education in natural settings. In this study, the environmental education systems of three U. S. National Parks in the State of Washington were investigated in order to examine the potential of applying the environmental education systems to the Korean situation. To this end, the authors made field trips to the Mount Rainier National Park, Olympic National Park and North Cascades National Park and interviewed the field environmental education professionals. There is one common theme of environmental education shared by the three National Parks, that is the National Parks are open to the students and ordinary people as classrooms for environmental education. All of the three National Parks were supported by regional societies of environmental conservation and education. However, the contents of the approaches to the environmental education of each National Park were different to each reflecting the differences of the natural environment and cultural background. This implies that environmental education systems should be designed based on the characteristics of the local environment and cultural tradition, although advanced environmental education systems of foreign countries would be useful for developing our own environmental education systems.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a program based on the Earth system based program to help students achieve science literacy. This program was designed to be connected across grade levels, and contents of the program were constructed to have meaningful interdisciplinary context. All the activities in the program were inquiry-based, and understanding of the nature of science was considered essential throughout the program. In addition, appreciation and stewardship for the Earth system were systematically emphasized on any grade level. Design of the program applied U.S. National Science Education Standards for the quality of and conditions for school science programs.

개발된 교육과정분석틀은 미국 국가과학교육기준(National Science Curriculum Standard; NRC, 1996)과 TIMSS(Third International Mathematics and Science Study; Robitaille et al., 1993)의 과학교육과정 프레임을 근거로 구성하였다.

To their faculty and staff, university health care centers have served occupational health services and employee assistant program. Purpose: We performed this study to review the health promotion services on two kinds of health care center with different style of university formate. Methods: We tried to collect the data by literature review and interview with executive and provider at health care center in University of California at Berkeley and San Jose State University. Results: Our results were as followed. First, students could use the medical services just as they would their regular doctor's office and urgent care center. Second, the health promotion unit offered programs and services for keeping students healthy and safe, including many opportunities for students to get involved in shaping the public health of the campus. Third, the health promotion recommendation offered from ACHA was useful guideline to improve health status of their member in university campus. Finally, the student satisfaction surveys were used for evaluation and quality improvement. Conclusions: The systematic approach to improve health status of students, faculty and staff can use to maintain a state of optimum health among the diverse student community in support of academic excellence. Coupled with health promotion and public health programs, university health service have to reach all segments of the healthy campus community.
