The objective of this study is to investigate the cooling characteristics of a heat sink for an LED headlight used in passenger cars. To this end, this study conducts the experimental and numerical analysis of the heat sink heated at constant heat fluxes without air flow applied. In the experiments, heat was transferred at a constant heat flux through the bottom of a heat sink. The measured temperature on pre-selected locations of the heat sink was in good agreement with the numerically predicted one. The experimental and numerical results indicate that the convective heat transfer coefficient for the natural convection mode was decreased by increasing the heat flux applied to the bottom of heat sink, lowering the cooling capabilities.

The effects of the inclination of enclosure and partition on natural convective flow and heat transfer were investigated numerically. The enclosure was composed of the lower hot and the upper cold horizontal walls and the adiabatic vertical walls, and a partition was positioned perpendicularly at the mid-height of one vertical insulated wall. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations were performed with the variations of the partition length and Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between two horizontal walls and the enclosure height with water(Pr=4.95). The effects of the inclination angle of enclosure and partition on the heat transfer within an enclosure were also studied. As the results, the increase of the inclination angle of enclosure rapidly raised the heat transfer rate, while the inclination angle for the maximum Nusselt number was retarded with the increase of the partition length and the decrease of the heat transfer rate became larger in proportion to the increase of the partition length. The Nusselt number obtained by the inclination of partition was smaller than that of the inclination of enclosure. However, the difference of the heat transfer rates was considerably decreased at the longer partition lengths and the trends for the variation of the average Nusselt number were more similar with that of the inclination of enclosure. The upward oriented partition increases the convective heat transfer distinctly in contrast to that of the inclination of enclosure as the partition length increases.

Natural convection in trapezoidal sections of cavity was numerically investigated using a Finite Volume Method. Temperatures of the upper inclined and lower horizontal walls are constant, with vertical side walls being insulated. When the top wall is hotter than the bottom one, a single cell of stratified flow field is obtained and heat transfer occurs only by conduction. For the colder top wall, bifurcation solutions are obtained for the higher Rayleigh numbers, while unique solutions for lower values. Flow structure is strongly dependent on the configuration and the Rayleigh number.

A Numerical study on two-dimensional laminar natural convection with and without surface radiation in fully or partially open square cavity was performed. The cavity has one vertical heated wall facing a vertical opening and two horizontal insulated walls. The pressure boundary condition was applied to the opening instead of the velocity boundary condition. The results of this study showed that the increase of partition length decreased the convective and the radiative Nusselt numbers. It was also found that the increase of wall emissivity decreased the convective Nusselt numbers but increased the radiative Nusselt numbers.

A numerical analysis has been conducted on the interaction of the thermal radiation and natural convection in a rectangular enclosure filled with a gray fluid. P-1 approximation is adopted for the radiative transfer and its application limit is examined. Considered are the Stark number effect, the optical thickness effect and the wall emissivity effect on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. As the Stark number increase or the optical thickness decreases, the boundary layer thickness and the flow velocity increase. Transition to turbulence is retarded with the increase of the radiation effect. When the optical thickness is one, the radiation effect is negligible for the Stark numbers larger than 10.

The numerical study for the effect of various factors that affect the temperature distribution of the process glass installed above the large rectangular heater plate was carried out. For the calculation, heat flux, distance between heat source and process glass plate, effect of vacuum condition and convection in a chamber were considered as important factors. The results showed that the temperature gradient on the glass was increased at the natural convection because of the buoyancy force increases due to the heated air. Also, the more heat flux and distance between the heater plate and glass increases, the more increasing the temperature gradient was. In the case of isothermal heating wall, the temperature variation was smaller than the uniform heat flux condition.
In this paper, the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation were solved to find out the optimal location of electrical heat trace for anti-freeze of water inside the pipe for fire protection. Since the conduction equation of pipe was coupled with the natural convection of water, the analysis of conjugate heat transfer was conducted. A commercial code (ANSYS-FLUENT) based on SIMPLE-type algorithm was used for investigating the unsteady flows and temperature distributions in water region. From the numerical experiments, the isotherms and the vector fields in water region were obtained. Furthermore, it was found that the lowest part of the pipe cross-section was an optimal position of electrical heat trace assuming the constant thermal expansion coefficient of water since the minimum temperature of the water with the position is higher than those with the other positions.

Natural convective flow and heat transfer characteristics in a partially opened enclosure fitted with a horizontal divider are investigated numerically. The enclosure is composed of a lower hot and a upper cold horizontal walls and adiabatic vertical walls. A divider is attached perpendicularly to the vertical insulated wall. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations have been carried out by varying the length of divider, the opening size, and the Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between two horizontal walls and the enclosure height for air(Pr=0.71). As result, when the opening size is fixed, the intensity of the secondary flow is weaken as the length of divider increases. The maximum heat transfer rate over the upper cold wall occurs at a position bounded on the opening. However, when the length of divider is increased considerably, its maximum occurs at the right wall. The stability and frequency of oscillation are affected by the Rayleigh number and length of divider. The Nusselt number is increased with the increase of the opening size and the increase of Rayleigh number.

In comparison with some other light sources, LED has merits such as increased life expectancy, fast response, pollution free, and high energy efficiency. Lately, due to development of LED with high brightness and capacity, LED has widely used in many industrial fields such as automotive, aviation, display, transportation and special lighting applications. Since the high heat generation of LED chips can cause a reduction in lifetime, degradation of luminous efficiency, and variation of color temperature, studies have been carried out on the optimization of LED packaging and heat sinks. In this study, experiments on measuring the heat generation rate of LED and the cooling performance of a heat sink were carried for analyzing the thermal characteristics of LED lighting system in free convection. From the results, dimensionless correlation on the cooling performance of heat sink in natural convection was proposed with Nusselt number and Rayleigh number as a guideline for designing cooling device of LED lightings.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the cooling performance of radial heat sink used for high power LED lightings by natural convection cooling with surrounding air. Experimental and numerical analyses are carried out together. Parametric studies are performed to compare the effects of geometric parameters in radial heat sink such as the number of fins, fin height, fin length, and thickness of fin base as well as the surface coatings of radial heat sink. In this study, the cooling of 60 W LED lamp is examined with radiative heat transfer considered as well as natural convection. Numerical results show the optimum condition when the number of fin is 40, heat sink height is 120 mm, fin length is 15 mm, and fin base thickness is 3 mm. The difference in temperature of the LED metal PCB is within $1^{\circ}C$ between numerical analyses and experimental results. Also, the CNT coating on the heat sink surface is found to increase the cooling performance significantly.
