  • Recently, the recycling and reusing of construction and demolition waste concrete is urgently required because generation quantity of construction and demolition waste concrete is greatly increased according to the rapid increasing of urban redevelopment project. On the other hand, the problem solution for demand and supply unbalance of fine aggregate is urgently required because of the restriction of collecting sea fine aggregate by intensification of environment influence evaluation and the shortage of river fine aggregate. but a quality of aggregate as building structure is not demonstrated. Therefore it is the objective of this study to estimate plastic and early dry shrink crack of fiber reinforced concrete using a recycled aggregate by plat-ring test and mock-up test of exposure to the air. as a result, in case of plat- ring test, developing crack is wider using recycled aggregate concrete than natural aggregate concrete, is wider using fiber reinforced concrete than non fiber. in case of mock-up test of exposure to the air, it is similar to plat-ring test.

  • The aim of the research is to suggest an economical and sustainable method of reducing pH of recycled aggregate as an embanking and a covering materials. Because of the unhydrated cement based materials on the surface of the recycled aggregate, it causes a severe problem on environment with leaked high alkali water from embankment and covering by using recycled aggregate. In this research, to reduce the pH of recycled aggregate, regarding the recycled fine aggregate, eight different methods were tested and analyzed with three different categorized: natural treatment, artificial treatment, and chemical treatment. From the results of experiment, it was considered that the most efficient method of reducing pH of recycled aggregate was the chemical treatment using acid such as $CO_2$ acceleration or monoammonium phosphate (MAP), and diammonium phosphate (DAP). Especially, using MAP and DAP, fertilizers, is the most efficient method of reducing pH with its time duration and performance.

  • In predicating the probability distribution of chloride diffusion coefficient of recycled aggregate concrete ($D_{RAC}$), the morphological characteristics of three phases, i.e., the old attached mortar, the natural aggregate and the new mortar, should all be taken into account. The present paper attempts to develop a probability density evolution method (PDEM) to achieve this. After verifying the derived PDEM results with experimental results, the effects of old attached mortar to the $D_{RAC}$ are examined in a quantitative manner. It is found that (1) the variation of the attached mortar content is much sensitive to $D_{RAC}$; (2) given the probability distribution of the content and chloride diffusion coefficient of old mortar, the probability distribution of DRAC can be analysed based on the PDEM; and (3) the critical chloride diffusion coefficient at a certain assurance rate can be obtained by the PDEM. The analysis results of this investigation will be valuable to the durability design for RAC.

  • The recent increase of the construction business. reflects tile rapid increase of the amounts of construction wastes caused by new buildings and demolitions. This trend brings about a problem of insufficient aggregate in the construction arena because construction wastes from new buildings are usually reclaimed in the land and it causes environmental pollution and a restriction of exploiting a natural aggregate, brought up by environmental organizations as well. Accordingly, researchers suggest recycled aggregate as a countermeasure of the two problems, however, it's not actually been used in the construction fields. By this study, it'll be feasible to expect to solve the problem of insufficient aggregate and to reduce environmental pollution from waste-reclamation.

  • Each year, about four million tons of steel slag, a by-product produced during the manufacture of steel by refining pig iron in the converter furnace, is generated. It is difficult to recycle this steel slag as aggregate for concrete because the reaction with water and free-CaO in steel slag results in a volume expansion that leads to cracking. However, the steel slag used in this study is atomized using an air-jet method, which rapidly changes the melting substance at high temperature into a solid at a room temperature and prevents free-CaO from being generated in steel slag. This rapidly-cooled steel slag has a spherical shape and is even heavier than natural aggregate, making it suitable for the aggregate of radiation shielding concrete. This study deals with the radiation shielding property of concrete that uses the rapidly-cooled steel slag from the oxidizing process in the converter furnace as fine aggregate. It was shown that the radiation shielding performance of concrete mixed with rapidly-cooled steel slag is even more superior than that of ordinary concrete.

  • Along with the increased social infrastructures and reconstruction, the demand for aggregate, which is used in concrete, has rapidly increased. However, there are problems due to the exhaustion of natural aggregate resources, and strict restrictions. In this study, the possibility of using rapid chilled steel slag as a substitutive material of fine aggregate is determined from the property test and mechanical test for the concrete that is made with rapid chilled steel slag, which highly decreases the free CaO, the main problem of the steel slag.

  • Commonly used concrete in general, consists of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and water. Natural river sand is the most commonly used material as fine aggregate in concrete. One of the important requirements of concrete is that it should be durable under certain conditions of exposure. The durability of concrete is defined as its ability to resist weathering action, chemical attack or any other process of deterioration. Durable concrete will retain its original form, quality and serviceability when exposed to its environment. Deterioration can occur in various forms such as alkali aggregate expansion, freeze-thaw expansion, salt scaling by de-icing salts, shrinkage, attack on the reinforcement due to carbonation, sulphate attack on exposure to ground water, sea water attack and corrosion caused by salts. Addition of admixtures may control these effects. In this paper, an attempt has been made to replace part of fine aggregate by tailing material and part of cement by fly ash to improve the durability of concrete. The various durability tests performed were chemical attack tests such as sulphate attack, chloride attack and acid attack test and water absorption test. The concrete blend with 35% Tailing Material (TM) in place of river sand and 20% Fly Ash (FA) in place of OPC, has exhibited higher durability characteristics.

  • In this paper the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column connections under cyclic loading was analyzed. The specimens, manufactured in a reduced-scale were made of (a) recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) by replacing 30% of natural coarse aggregate (NCA) with recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) and (b) RAC incorporating Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber i.e., PET fiber-reinforced concrete (PFRC) at the joint region. PET fiber (aspect ratio=25) of 0.5% by weight of concrete used in the PFRC mix was obtained by hand cutting of post-consumer PET bottles. A reference specimen was also prepared using 100% of NCA and subjected to similar loading sequence. Comparing the results the structural behavior under cyclic loading of RAC specimens are quite similar to the reference specimens. Damage tolerance, load resisting capacity, stiffness degradation, ductility, and energy dissipation of the RAC specimens enhanced due to addition of PET fibers at the joint region. PFRC specimens also presented a lower damage indices and higher principal tensile stresses as compared to the RAC specimens. The results obtained gave experimental evidence on the feasibility of RAC for structural use. Using PET fibers as a discrete reinforcement is recommended for improving the seismic performance of RAC specimens.

  • It is difficult to keep the balance of supply and demand for natural aggregates in recent years, because natural resources have become to be almost exhausted. Crushed stone is already used for coarse aggregate instead of river gravel at present. Now, crushed sand or sea sand should be used for fine aggregate, because natural sand also has been exhausted with a few exceptions around Nakdong River. The sea sand has a lot of problems which are the corrosion of reinforcement bars, the investment of facility for cleansing salt and the cost increase due to the insufficiency of industrial water. Therefore, it is necessary to produce and to utilize the crushed sand very actively, but some material properties which are related to water absorption, strength and chemical durability, prevent from determining the generalized criteria because its rocks make much differences in its physical and chemical characteristics. In this paper, fundamental physical properties of crushed sand, which comes from Daegu Subway construction fields, have been investigated for the usability on basic material of concrete. The optimum replacement ratio and the strength estimation method of crushed sand replacing natural sand also have been presented here through the compressive strength test of ready-mixed concrete cylinders.
